Remember about 100 pages ago when I asked why Africa hasn't been hit badly?

A guy I work with who grew up in Uganda said that he (and everyone else there) has been taking Hydroxychloroquine every day since they were kids to ward off malaria.

I think it’s taken once a week for malaria prevention.

While we can all argue about lockdowns, shelter in place, pie faced 5s seeking love from doughgirl 4s on Spring Break and the timing one thing that will be worth watching.  For all of that a lot of for lack of a better term "old folks homes" either shut people out completely or dramatically reduced ingress/egress much earlier in this than all that other stuff.  Given that a big piece of the deaths (though certainly not all) have been from this thing getting in to those places and ripping through them it will be interesting to see if some of that earlier action with regard to those most vulnerable pays off at all.

And yes I realize it wasn't complete and absolute and every where....before you decide to give me all the exceptions

Why the fuck are we worried about Pompeo's schedule...when Fauci should have been dismissed 20 minutes ago.  The guy is almost 80, and has the most stressful job that's not in outer space.  He's repeatedly said he's on a 19-hour work day, let him go and get a nap.  What the fuck?

You must not be on facebook.

Oh no I embrace many social platforms. The shit I've seen there makes me almost hope some of them get a dose of something very irritating, but not communicable..

I should have added. ..... makes folks I give a damn about or respect... pay attention.

Here's part of what he posted:

So if Chloroquine turns out to be a good medicine for treating Coronavirus, then that probably partly explains why Uganda has zero confirmed cases to-date. That is a medicine that I used to fear the most while growing up there as a child when they would give us to treat symptoms of malaria. It was really bitter. My dad would give me the chloroquine tablets to take and I would hide some underneath the couch depending on the severity of my symptoms. One day, my mom was cleaning and found almost over 50 tablets hidden underneath the couch. One day, I received a whacking for that.

Their stated goal is "social distancing."  That's what the HEB manager told us this morning as we waited in line.  They guy behind us complained loudly it was stupid because we were on top of each other waiting in line and would all go in and touch everything inside the store anyway.  I agreed with him but he was being unnecessarily surly.

I went to my local HEB this morning.  Waited 15 minutes in line to get in.  One HEB employee came down the line with sanitary wipes to wipe carts held by people in line.  Someone asked him why HEB was limiting customers and he said they didn't want a lot of people crowding/fighting for product in specific aisles (paper products, etc.).

I've been to Costco and Kroger and haven't seen anyone fighting over anything...... yet that is.

I'd imagine all hell would break loose down there in Texas if a single bottle of Stag, Blantons or some other unicorn showed up on a shelf.

Whuh?  I'm saying this is not a good use of his time.  Every minute of his day is absolutely 100% mission-critical and we're using him right now as a decorative item on the dais right now.  It's a complete waste of time of the most important person in the Western Hemisphere right now.

if you want to see something funny look at this chart. surprisingly (or not, honestly) it shows *zero* cases imported from China!

here is their trend for imported vs community transmitted

Go be an idiot on the CR thread, instead of polluting this one with your frequent panic ninny whining over any triviality you can conflate into some political OMG WOW bitching.

Short update on international travel: daughter is at the Montreal airport now, waiting on her flight.  She was the only person going through security.  The only one going through customs.   And at least as of a little while ago, the only one at her gate.  A classmate flew to LGA yesterday and was the only passenger on her flight.

Let us know if they make her sit back in coach?

In case anyone was wondering the large wine warehouses in Northern CA that everything ships out of were deemed essential and are operating as usual.

Everybody can laugh but having some of the sins available is important.

I have a friend working in the White House, alongside the team supporting the president. He's at the PCs. He says they're all working around the clock. Trump is basically taking naps and that is it and that's been the case for weeks. This is the hour in which we want the fucking leadership of this country to do whatever it takes to make the most of the situation. They don't need clowns like you moaning for them to regulate their time according to your needs. What an unfuckingbelievably stupid position. You fucking guys are a roving clownshow through this thread.

The napping thing was anecdotal.  My point was that surely Fauci has more important things to do than just stand there for 20 minutes saying nothing.  Surely he has other things to do, no?  I had no idea how strongly you policed this thread, we walk in your fucking shadow.

Are you saying your friend/white house staff are doing all the work and that Trump just takes naps?

Microsoft built a chat bot for CDC as a CV-19 assessment tool.

Delivering information and eliminating bottlenecks with CDC’s COVID-19 assessment bot

Mar 20, 2020

In a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s not only important to deliver medical care but to also provide information to help people make decisions and prevent health systems from being overwhelmed.

Microsoft is helping with this challenge by offering its Healthcare Bot service powered by Microsoft Azure to organizations on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response to help screen patients for potential infection and care.

For example, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just released a COVID-19 assessment bot that can quickly assess the symptoms and risk factors for people worried about infection, provide information and suggest a next course of action such as contacting a medical provider or, for those who do not need in-person medical care, managing the illness safely at home.
