I'd like to believe the reports that we're making progress.  So this question assumes we are.

Exactly how does "the end" of this thing happen? If social distancing works, once we all stop doing it won't we just start this whole thing over?  What (other than a cure, vaccine, etc.) would make that not happen in perpetuity?

If this has been discussed I missed it.

Oh, and a tiger at Bronx Zoo got it.

Social distancing for all must be in place until at least one of the following happens:

We have an available, proven treatment (in the works, likely by November)

We have a vaccine (in the works, likely by Mar 2021).

We have proven those who have it cannot get it again and have available, proven antibody tests (in the works, likely by June).

We have available, proven, rapid infection testing (in the works, likely by June).

We have proven social distancing has worked so well that the virus has been largely eradicated (unlikely ever).

The Verge: Tesla previews ventilator powered by Model 3 tech

Quote

Tesla has shared an update on the ventilator it’s developing to address the shortage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a new video posted on the company’s YouTube channel, Tesla’s engineers show off two versions of the ventilator, a prototype model with its components laid out across a desk, as well as a packaged model that shows how it might look when used by a hospital. Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised to build the ventilators last month after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio asked for the company’s help.

Tesla has been criticized for attempting to invent a new ventilator rather than utilizing an existing design, but the video helps to explain its reasoning. “We wanna use parts that we know really well, we know the reliability of… and they’re available in volume,” one of Tesla’s engineers explains.

The company’s ventilator design re-purposes multiple components from its cars, including the Model 3’s infotainment screen and computer, as well as a part used in the Model S’s suspension system. In theory, using these components should help speed up the development and manufacturing process of the machines.

“WE WANNA USE PARTS THAT WE KNOW REALLY WELL”
Tesla also isn’t alone in attempting to develop a new ventilator design. Yesterday, The Guardian reported that British firms are pooling resources as they’ve been developing their own ventilator designs. One high profile manufacturer is Dyson, who received an order for 10,000 ventilators from the British government. However, as of yesterday, Dyson’s design is yet to receive regulatory approval from the relevant authorities, according to The Guardian.

In the US, fellow car manufacturers Ford and General Motors have announced plans to make ventilators and other vital equipment for the medical community. Ford is working with GE’s health care division to try and make a “simplified version” of its ventilators, while GM has partnered with Ventec Life Systems to help increase production of its machines.

As well as developing its own ventilator design, Musk says that he’s also purchasing FDA-approved “ventilators” and shipping them to organizations that need them. However, when NYC Health and Hospitals tweeted to thank the CEO for the “essential” equipment, others pointed out that what was pictured were BPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) machines, which aren’t as useful for intensive care units, according to The Financial Times.

Musk has faced a wave of criticism for his responses to the novel coronavirus pandemic, which have included downplaying its severity, suggesting in a tweet that children are immune to the virus, and attempting to keep Tesla’s California factory open in violation of a shelter-in-place order.

Despite Musk’s early skepticism about the virus, at least Tesla’s latest video shows that the company’s work on ventilators is progressing.

It's all in the wording, man. Christ didn't rise (allegedly) 3 days later; he rose on the 3rd day.

Had you said, "This is the 4th day that the article has been available" then you would have been accurate. But you said that it was released "4 days ago" which is Thursday, not Friday.

Glad I could clear this up for you.

It's a damn shame when an Aggie has to correct a Longhorn.

From what I’ve been able to gather, he’s not an MD but likely a CRNA. At my hospital, and most good hospitals, they’re not allowed to intubate. They only manage the vent once the patient is intubated by the attending anesthesiologist. Now, if he works at some shitty ass community hospital, all bets are off.

yeah, this is nonsense.

From the hypotheticals thread, this is the best plan that I've seen thus far.  From the American Enterprise Institute:

https://www.aei.org/research-products/report/national-coronavirus-response-a-road-map-to-reopening/

A basic summation:

I have to imagine that our leaders are already discussing something similar.  It's probably going to be state-by-state.  It's going to take a decent amount of government cooperation and honest state assessments, so there are pitfalls obviously.

*I would guess that this means there will still be crowd restrictions, and 100,000 person sporting events are going to be off-limits for some time.

Well now I see Judge Jenkins said part of the reason only 43 reported is that a number of state labs are closed on Sunday.   Which begs the question, seriously, during a pandemic with a known backlog of tests, we can't manage to keep labs open on a Sunday?  SMH

That's the day they pray the covid away.

Can't believe that the SECNAV is using words like "betrayal" (IE - treason) that actually have repercussions per black letter UCMJ regs. Especially coming from the SECNAV. I wonder if they'll follow through with the accusation of treason.

That was terrible.  If he doesn't get fired I think you will see 4 stars stepping down.  From one of my sources - "this shit is just the tip of the iceberg".

Went to 99 Ranch in Plano yesterday.  Almost everyone had masks on.  Went to Whole Foods today to get some stuff I forgot.... maybe 15-20% of people wearing masks.  Definitely a cultural thing.  Everyone should be wearing a mask or covering themselves.

Hardly see any mask just about anywhere in San Antonio. Maybe 1% or so of the people I’ve seen are wearing mask

Allstate is set to refund premiums, $600 million, with the decrease in driving of its customers. Their study shows a decrease of between 35 and 50 percent in most states.

I got an email from Allstate today for Shelter-in-Place Payback for auto customers. It says most people will get a payback of about 15% based on their monthly insurance costs in April and May. I was kinda shocked to see an insurance company voluntarily giving money back, but I'll certainly take it. Kudos to Allstate.

He looks like he's got a few of the "underlying conditions". Not good.

When they started reading out the report, I thought that they were announcing his death.  Interesting times when an ICU transfer is a small relief.

When you say "guys like you", what exactly are you referring to? I don't remember ever making a prediction of "holocaust death tolls" or anything resembling that. You are certainly welcome to go through my post history and point out where that happened. Let me know what you find.
Also curious about the "selfish twat" part. What have I said in any COVID-related thread that makes me a selfish twat? Or is that just a generic insult that popped up on your magic 8 ball?
Your schtick is tired. You seem incapable of posting in this thread without making personal attacks against people. When you run out of legitimate problems to attack people for, you start claiming people said things they didn't to create internet bad guys that don't exist, just so you can have someone to go on a crusade against.
What are you trying to gain from all of this? A lot of us come here to share information but you seem intent on spreading misery to everyone around you.

Well I mean that has been his entire history on every Texas site.

Is that for everyone or only for the customers who willingly installed spyware on their vehicle?

Well, and the City of Austin has formally adopted the CDC guidelines and recommended that everyone wear a mask when out among other people.  So, it's not just Facebook Karen.

Laredo is ahead of the curve of everyone in Texas in requiring masks/bandanas while out in public or risk  a $1,000 as of last Thursday.

I'm plenty civil until things get uncivil.
This thread has been pummeled with thoughtless predictions and old, irrelevant data for weeks. I'm not "spiking the football at the 20 yard line" either. If people want to post panic porn, it should be current and delivering something new to the thread. An article 4 days ago presented as something new to freak out over, when it has been shown to be flatly incorrect (show me where the hospitals are overrun in Houston, quick!), and predictions of 500,000 dead by Memorial Day are where you and others should be directing your ire.

Lmao no, you’re a psychotic cunt who lives a miserable life in Galveston

They were talking about average reductions in driving of 35% to 50%, so passing along 15% savings back to the consumer seems more like a publicity stunt.

By spyware, I assume you're talking about the Drivewise feature on the Allstate app. I just did some digging on that today and it seems like that monitors your driving activity to reward safe drivers in some way. Not sure if there's a downside to using it other than worse battery life, or if you're concerned about Allstate knowing how fast you drive.

The Shelter-in-Place email didn't mention that at all, so I don't think it's a requirement. Here's the exact email:

As we all work together to slow the spread of COVID-19, more of us are at home and driving less, which means having fewer accidents. That's why we are announcing a Shelter-in-Place Payback for our auto customers. And, since our lives have become more digital, we are providing free identity protection for the rest of the year.

Most auto customers will get an average payback of about 15% based on their monthly insurance costs during April and May. You can get your payback faster through the Allstate® mobile app.

Full Minnesota numbers are released daily at 11AM, and can be found at health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/situation.html

Maybe things are working around here, in that the number of confirmed cases has consistently been between 50 and 75 daily since March 26, with no exponential surge. Recoveries at about half of the positive cases.

Dude Minnesota is made up of MSP and a bunch of dairy farms. Not even this shit eating virus can spread in that wasteland

Lol, go back to your community hospital, bro. I’m sure it’s great.

you posted nonsense. it might be the policy at some hospitals, but to say most good hospitals don't allow CRNAs to intubate is pure nonsense. several of the Top 10 hospitals in the nation have CRNAs intubating. some of those also have RTs and Neonatal nurses intubating out of the OR (though usually not in codes or difficult airways). depends on the patient.  I'm not at a community hospital.

saying that CRNAs are then handed the vent to manage after the patient is intubated as if that is the easy part makes me wonder about your personal experience working a vent.

I don’t work a vent, dickhead.  If you read my earlier responses I said we were allowed to them as medical students and ED docs do them in emergencies. And your long winded responses to most everything that don’t really add anything make you as useless as Brisket. I’d take a 100 CTJ’s over  both of you.

And judging by your posting history I would’ve guessed you were either a community hospital physician or work at a VA. You just seem the “type”.
