CR: COVID-19 --Political Talk

Since some of you guys just love the forced choice dichotomy of our political system, I'll play. If the choice is between Xi and Abbott, I am good with the latter.

Well, being that I was referring to the ACTUAL options that we have: tweedle malignant dumbass and tweedle malignant dumberass. That’s kind of the whole point: we have no good choices. It’s all on us.

What you are about to see tear through the Southern Bible belt is gonna be mind boggling. The southern republican states simply ignored all science and instead listened to Fox news of, and tweets of, President Trump.  It's not gonna be as many refrigerated trailers as New York, put the combination of age and distance from hospitals in all the rural areas of FL, GA, AL, and MS are going to have a lot of people getting an up close and personal look at watching a loved one die.  At first they will head town the hospital a few towns over, then they will just stay home and gasp to death in their own homes.

The only thing left for FL, GA, MS, and AL to do is take a page out of the China book and lie about the reality of the death count.

That article about Kushner is fucking terrifying and enraging. We are being ruled over by absolute psychos. Such a fucking creep. Patrick Bateman without the humor or irony.

His fucking waxed eyebrows are the topping on the sociopathic cake.

Yeah,  but both sides.   Remember when Obama appointed his car salesmen nephew to run FEMA pr when Bill named Chelsea’s prom date to  be the new Drug Czar?

So Hunter Biden getting a inconsequential  job on the board of a foreign oil company is an unforgivable sin to Republicans, but the are perfectly content with Trump naming his son in law, with zero relevant experience, getting named to help lead a pandemic, the likes of which the US hasn’t seen in over a 100 years.

pretty much epitomizes MAGA and trump worship.  Sad!

Can any of the Trumpkins defend hiring Jared?   Can @Anastasis at least both sides it?

GW didn't have today's impenetrable wall of conservative fake news to rely upon; the Death Star was still under construction. Now Republicans and enablers are insulated enough from reality in their beliefs that Trump could shoot someone on 5th Ave, or be responsible for an exponentially larger number of American deaths, and it won't mean shit. USA, please surprise me.

The whole situation has gone way beyond parody and way  beyond incompetence. Its basically a situation of you are either in favor of killing people and support trump, or you are in  favor of removing trump as president and not killing people.

I had heard it was supposed to take the patients that would normally go to the hospitals that are now taking corona patients.  But 3 people?  Something's wrong.

From what I heard, they will only take patients that initially go to a hospital, have a non-covid related illness or injury, and are officially tested and cleared of covid.  Meanwhile, asymptomatic people don't qualify for covid testing, so nobody qualifies for the Comfort.

Coronavirus: US Navy removes Captain Brett Crozier who raised alarm

In a letter, Capt Brett Crozier had urged his superiors to act to prevent US troops dying outside of wartime.

But acting US Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said the commander "exercised extremely poor judgement".

At least 100 people aboard the vessel have been infected, reports say.

On Thursday, Mr Modly told reporters that Capt Crozier was being fired for allegedly leaking the letter to the media.

He said the letter "created the impression the Navy was not responding to his questions".

"It creates the perception the Navy is not on the job; the government is not on the job. That's just not true."

New study from MIT/Fed Reserve finds early intervention to mitigate pandemic (e.g., Washington State/California) produces a better economy after the pandemic than letting the pandemic run its course without mitigation efforts (e.g., USG policy, NY, NJ, the South . . .). Even a small delay of 5-10 days in actions such as social distancing had a meaningful impact on deaths and recovery. The authors studied the 1918 Flu Pandemic in the United States.

Quote

What are the economic consequences of an influenza pandemic? And given the pandemic, what are the economic costs and benefits of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI)? Using geographic variation in mortality during the 1918 Flu Pandemic in the U.S., we find that more exposed areas experience a sharp and persistent decline in economic activity. The estimates imply that the pandemic reduced manufacturing output by 18%. The downturn is driven by both supply and demand-side channels. Further, building on findings from the epidemiology literature establishing that NPIs decrease influenza mortality, we use variation in the timing and intensity of NPIs across U.S. cities to study their economic effects. We find that cities that intervened earlier and more aggressively do not perform worse and, if anything, grow faster after the pandemic is over. Our findings thus indicate that NPIs not only lower mortality; they also mitigate the adverse economic consequences of a pandemic.

. . . [C]ities that intervened earlier and more aggressively experience a relative increase in manufacturing employment, manufacturing output, and bank assets in 1919, after the end of the pandemic. The effects are economically sizable. Reacting 10 days earlier to the arrival of the pandemic in a given city increases manufacturing employment by around 5% in the post period. Likewise, implementing NPIs for an additional 50 days increases manufacturing employment by 6.5% after the pandemic.

When did this nation collectively lose its common decency and ability to reason. I still hear stories on Fox and from facebook that we should just let the pandemic run its course because of the economy.

From an economics perspective, these people are wrong.

Their moral compass is broken, or, worse - sociopathic with a great antipathy for humankind.

The research is free to download from the link (as all academic research should be).

Leaking info to the press is bad, even if he did it for the right reason (to get the Navy to act). While he was saving the lives of his crew, he also made the operational readiness of his unit known. That's kind of a big deal. Being a Captain of a nuclear attack ship is a 1 strike and you're out job. It was a noble sacrifice he made and hopefully it pays off in civilian life which will be rapidly arriving.

He broke chain of command. The biggest no no there is. You don’t air dirty laundry. It’s not your call.

What was he supposed to do? Not trolling question. Sincere. I certainly understand the security, but it does seem to be a unique dilemma.

Those damn socialist countries and the way they care of things. C'mon man you also gotta screw things up so we can prove how right we.

It’s really insane that the Dems didn’t even push for this kind of approach. It would’ve been really hard for republicans to publicly oppose it and it sure as hell would’ve been better than giving Trump a fucking slush fund to give out to his friends.

I read his thread. That was a helluva way to start my morning. Unbelievable tragedy and heartbreak.

I noticed that he is not complaining, he is stating facts. And people will turn away from the pain and sorrow that is starting them in the face and obfuscate and deflect and deny that much of this could have been handled so much better. It was always going to be a difficult sad time but the malfeasance was avoidable.

The dems haven't learned shit, and they kept the exact same leadership that produced the 2016 electoral results. They're going to keep making those mistakes until their party clears out the leadership
