Any corona test that takes more than 48 hrs is absolutely worthless

No shit. So if this were August, y'all would be fine with me teaching your kids 24 hours after the fever broke while I was waiting for my results, right?

Hard to believe Don Junior sleeps with his his infected girlfriend and has not contracted the virus himself. Trump would never allow a positive test for Junior to be made public.

I've concluded that Dotard has decided the strategy is to actually create a herd immunity by intentionally doing things to infect more people. The number of infected and deaths will be huge, but the curve will actually go down and then he'll say see it did just go away, just like I said it would. Besides, most of those infected will be those non-white people so win - win.

He’s doubling down with American lives to win the election, and most of the downstream GOP are conspiring with him to do it.

I think the only strategy in play is win or die.  That what is behind the curtain is so horrifyingly damaging to not only Trump but the greater GOP that you would let 150,000 innocents die to keep it unrevealed.

If it we’re just Trump, I might buy that it was for some petty reason like maintaining a facade of winning.  But it’s not, it’s the whole damn party.

The GOP will have the best reason in the world to jettison Trump completely.  200k+ dead and they can hang it all around Trump’s neck.  This election cycle is gone for the Republicans.  They’re no longer trying to win as much a minimize damage. Some are going to live to fight another day sadly.

Fair point. The plan of his handlers.

is there a way, without going through the hassle of filing a FOIA, to quickly discern when a particular government website was registered?  I'm tech illiterate but I would think it's easy to find out when a domain name was registered/went live.

coronavirus.gov is to what I am referring.

Well shit.

I actually agree with the President on something.

Virtual learning for school is terrible... especially K-5.

6-8 less so.

And for high school it sucks... but can be done.

College ... well. If distance learning is terrible then there's a shit ton of terrible degrees out there.

That being said, just yelling into the ether that we need to open schools is complete batshit crazy.

Now he's going to hold a gun to the schools' head and strip out all the requirements to keep people safe by deligitamizing the CDC's recommendations?!

That's a level of malevolence towards his own people that I didn't see coming. I mean, he caged migrant children which is grade-A evil. But one could argue that he's hated immigrants for a long time.

But to do this to American citizens?! Fucken-A man.

This along with trying to kill the ACA during a pandemic is next level Bond villain shit.

He's going to turn something we should all strive for (reopening schools) into another culture war issue like masks.

Just venting: These cock suckers really waged 3 and a half years of a misinformation campaign and are now wallowing in their own shit storm so have just thrown up their hands and said fuck it, whatever happens with Covid happens. 130k already dead and tens of thousands more to come (if not more). Maybe if 40% of the country didn't believe it was a "democratic hoax" for months we wouldn't be here.

I'm sure the dots have been connected many times on this 500+ page thread, but fuck even my sister, the RGV RN was retweeting shit about this being a democratic hoax in March. "It's just a ploy to take attention away from the BEST ECONOMY IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND". Three months later and the RGV is hit with fucking mortars. Even her team of L&D nurses in Harlingen is hit with 3 cases, all of them showing physical symptoms, one severe. Now my nephew has it. And she's preaching all over facebook to wear a mask. Maybe if you (and the other followers) didn't waste months believing in that dumbshit's misinformation we would've had a chance to be prepared for this shit. But here we fucking are. [/rant]

Such an indictment of Trump’s leadership that even when he has an idea most people probably agree with (school is really important and should be taught in-person), his framing and lack of planning render it totally objectionable.  Instead of tweeting “hey all you pieces of shit, if y’all don’t force schools to open I’m goin to withhold the already woefully insufficient amount of money we give you”, it should be “One thing we can get bi-partisan support for is opening schools safely.  I’ve invited congressional leaders to the White House today to draft a plan to help provide states what they need in order to open in-person schools, especially for our elementary aged children.”  But no.

I looked this up and I'll eat crow. You are right. In American english that's a singular, even if that sounds odd to me.

A broken clock is correct ... Well it’s in a glass house you see ... and so it’s probably broken due to all the rocks being thrown.

The two birds in the bush protect it from breaking, though.

Remember that and don’t feel so bad. I well readed.

Concisely put. Children will be sent to regular class by the people who trust Trump as their leader. No matter how low my opinion of those people is, their kids don't deserve the risk of deathness, illness, and long-term damage.

Trump will have parents with assault rifles and balaclavas escorting their kids to school. Maybe we'll have protester present because they actually care about children. Nobody ever gets emotional or even overwrought over the safety of children. What could go wrong?

Far more people who have simply no other choice will be doing the same.  Because our publicly funded school system has no place for choice.  If you don't like it, send them to private school or homeschool them. There's your choices and you will like it.  Any approach other than that is the stuff that grows on fantasy island.

What about a metric shit ton?

You mean a shit tonne or officially the tonne de merde? It's ~1.1 times that of a shit ton.

But that shouldn't be confused w/ a shite ton which is 1.12 times that of a shit ton.

These are the people we forced back to work in shitty-wage service sector jobs all because fucking Karen wanted to be able to sit at Applebees and make someone wait on her.

I've slacked off on tipping clerks. I need to resume. I hope the small gesture of appreciation carries more weight than the small amount of money. So many try to refuse it at first, but then they seem to light up a little when I explain, "You're on the front line, man. You're taking the risks."

This news makes me very sad. As you and Anastasis point out, this is a nightmare for those with few choices and grotesquely little support ($1200, take it and feel lucky, Peedro!) from a government flooding millionaires with PPP funds. Sad and sick and ashamed of the US.

This is partially a political post because it’s my opinion that this problem won’t go away until two things happen: (1) trump is forced out of office and (2) we develop a vaccine.

Number one is inevitable. But with respect to the vaccine, I’m not a scientist, but since Covid is more like a cold than the flu, and to my knowledge we’ve never developed a cold vaccine, how confident can we be that one is actually coming?

It was my understanding that there are so many cold virii (rhinovirus, coronavirus, adenovirus) out there that it would be difficult to provide an effective vaccine.  This particular virus is (so far) pretty stable, and easier to target.

I am also not an epidemiologist.

Yeah, a cold can be one of many pathogens. A cold vaccine would be several vaccines. It's also not something that'd be real profitable for private companies, and there's more important shit to fund for public institutions. Essentially, it's not worth it.

COVID is one virus. It's more akin to a flu vaccine on that regard.

wait, shouldn't the "are" or "is" correlate with the subject, in this case, "degrees"?

there are a shit-ton of terrible degrees out there.

there is a shit-ton of water on the floor.

there is shit-ton of activity on the surly covid thread.

there are a shit-ton of grammar nazis on this site.

at least that's what sounds right to me.

So on a schools must open note. The Public Schools here in Lincoln said in early June they were going to reopen August 12th with masks, etc. Cases have jumped this past week and they moved our threat level from yellow to orange and the schools just sent out an email saying “about that start date”, indicating if case keep going the way they are they’ll postpone the opening soon

I don't understand the idea of postponing.  Move to online learning until the coast is clear.  We know online learning is less efficient than in-class learning -- get on it ASAP, instead of kicking the can down the road when kids could be (in theory) learning something.
