Texas, Florida, Souf Carolina, Alabama, Arizona? What on earth do those all have in common?

They all have cities with Dem mayors whom, everybody knows, are ultimately responsible for the welfare of the United States. Duh.

It's stunning how inept the average American is at discerning differences between various data sets.

Outdoor activity + crowds + masks = relatively low transmission

Indoor activity + crowds = higher transmission, especially if masks aren't nearly universal

BUT ALL THOSE BLACK PEOPLE PROTESTING AND RIOTING!!11!!

McConnell and Cheney having their masks moments is the first blow by the establishment to Trump. Incredible to see, thought it will get minimized. Will be interesting to see what they do if McConnell sees better polling.

Also, why southern states didn’t  push the message for bandanas instead of masks for the big bad manly men still irks me.

First off and foremost a salute to all those that have served our Country.  To those that gave the ultimate sacrifice, and the families that also felt the loss, my humble and heartfelt appreciation. It's is also wise to remember on this solemn day the importance of carefully and wisely exercise our military power.

2nd wave now assured.

Well Trump's message is getting though perfectly to the sheep that insist LOUDLY that "we are not sheep!" Having listened to a college educated man enjoy a few beverages over the weekend I found out the following.

1) They don't need to wear a mask, it's a hoax.  If they feel sick they will wear a mask.  - So they don't know the very basics of why this virus is more dangerous, BECAUSE of asymptomatic transmission by people that "don't feel sick."  This lack of basic knowledge by watching Fox and listening to Rush is staggering to a science based and informed person like myself.

2) The media won't even cover the virus once Biden is elected!  The news coverage will just disappear and so well the virus.

3) Bill Gates has a patent (or trademark it was confusing) on the vaccine!  When I pointed out that there were dozens upon dozens of different entities trying to develop a vaccine, they simply is NOT a vaccine to patent.   Just false shit that was fed to the Fox/Rush herd.  But this college educated father honestly believes these falsehoods.

4) We are grossly over counting the virus.  People are being classified as dying form the virus when they had cirrhosis of the liver!  I counter we are grossly undercounting the virus, specifically in states with Republican Governors where the numbers are being purposefully deflated. Again giving specific examples.  The "I don't like your facts begins to arise."

5) It would be great if he could buy into Medicare early, because retirement young is so expensive because of the $18K a year cost for insurance coverage his retired buddy pays. It's a fairly legitimate number for a non-group family plan.  This is the fault of... wait for it... Obamacare!  It was supposed to fix all this!

6) We have to get the economy back open!  It was stupid to shut it down and it's the Dems fault.  I retort, "Well when you do the dumbest fucking things possible you aren't left with any good choices because of the dumb fucking choices you already made.  I never wanted to shut down the economy, but shitting the bed on testing was the problem and lack of pushing for PPE in January was malpractice."  Mumble, mumble response, to which I sarcastically respond. "I am a fucking genius!  I was smarter than anyone in the Trump administration! I saw this coming off news reports back in early January the SECOND I heard anything out of China I knew it was bad."    I think the reply was Obama... something cop board bare.

7) "I don't know anyone who has had the virus."  To which I respond, you will.  Especially if people are not careful.  I state that this will spread through rural communities, even though they live a normal life of self-isolation.  The older age and need for the occasional central gathering in these rural areas will provide the opportunity for a concentrated spread. In other words, it will be Republican areas next.  I think that visually it may potentially be worse in the rural areas, where reductions in medicare reimbursements have shuttered and removed so many hospital beds.  The young kids leave the rural areas so the populations are older and the hospital beds fewer. I point out the "good news" that a lot of those folks may die at home, and not be counted as coronavirus deaths, so that's good GOP news.

So we are going to have exactly the outcome we tried to avoid by shutting down the damn economy.  A monster second wave.  Folks are watching and emulating our Presidents example of 'no mask, no worries." Fox News and the talk radio hosts also hide safely and encourage that the masks are silliness.  So the Trump plan is to get everyone back to normal.  Just do what you would normally do, and a mask is for pussy Democrats.  Not going to a crowded church is for pussy Dems (snd the Trump family as a whole) we need folks to get out there and get the economy going. So expect all the glimmers of college football to disappear by August 1st.  Sucks that we had to go right back to the dumbest thing possible.  But when the President of the United States makes all his decisions without facts or knowledge, you get a lot of fucking stupid decisions.  I was hoping that I would lose some money on my shorting the market and buy back into a Bull Market and enjoy college football this Fall.

Instead I am going to risk a hair more going short as 40% of our population believe the 7 things I listed above.  So we are going to act exactly as our President did during January and February, we are going to pretend that there is nothing wrong.  We could open up much more safely if everyone wore masks to PROTECT OTHERS.  But the message from the President is a mask is a form of political protest.  SO find a hobby, there won't be college football this fall. Unless you think parents letting their kids risk infection and infecting their families is a risk they are going to take? The reason?  Is too many people view NOT wearing a mask as some sort of a "non-sheep badge of honor" BECAUSE they (like our President) do not grasp the simple fact that they are gong to be a big part of the future spread. The saddest thing is that if our President would simply lead with a good mask wearing example this terrible isolation and economic damage might have been worth it, and we could truly start to mend.  We might have even been able to have college football (slim tough it may have been). Instead we are gonna see a lot of Facebook confessions from our right leaning friends as they do indeed "know somebody" touched by the virus.  Basically the virus is going to start touching white people, and white men in particular more broadly as we reopen.  Don't be surprised to see even Trump donning a mask after it's too late to set a good example. Sucks that it could have been so different.

Figured I would look back and see what I thought a month ago.  No surprise (unfortunately) but the virus hit his son first.  Sadly all this shit could have been muted so much more, but since all Republicans must ALWAYS bow to Trump we had to politicize mask wearing instead of doing what was best from both a health perspective and economic perspective. So the GOP led states made masks secondary, and Republican masklessness part of a political strategery.  I guess there was one thing I was wrong about.  This is not really the second wave, it's just the the big part of the first wave that COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED... just by listening to the science.

History is going to be very unkind to the Republican party over the clear stupidity.  Even today Mike Pence was out front explaining what a fan fucking tastic job they had done, "with the leadership of the President."  It was pathetic to hear the "listen to your local governments" then hear how dumb as fuck super spreader Trump campaign events were... free speech.  Free speech is when you speak.  Being herded in like sheep for slaughter to listen to an old insecure racist coward tell you a bunch of fucking lies, isn't free speech. It's just one more stupid fucking way for Trump to make sure a few more folks have massive medical bills and and a few more also get to plan funerals.  Because of a man's incredible insecurity and selfishness.

Gah . . . can you imagine being a pilot or a flight attendant?  "Come back to work, virtually guarantee the fact that you will get sick, or you're fired."

My stepdaughter is an "aesthetician" -- she does lashes for wealthy women.  It's tedious, detail-oriented work (that pays well).  It puts her in direct face-to-face contact with the client.  Her lash studio reopened a few weeks ago, and she was offered the opportunity to return.  She refused.  Now, she can't accept unemployment because she would have to lie on the question about "have you received any job offers since you were furloughed?"

"Well, yeah, I received an offer to jump off cell towers with a bedsheet, and and one that will probably ensure I'll get sick.  Guess I'm out of luck."

That is precisely how they fuck you. I personally know over 10 people that have gotten fucked the exact same way in the last couple of months. And I don't know that many people.

Interesting thread on how deaths may be lagging because it’s younger people getting it.

While this is no reason to let our guard down at all, testing viral genomics of covid-19 turned up evidence of ORF7a deletion in a sample in Arizona in May and now the same deletion in Thailand.  An analogous ORF7a deletion is what was observed with SARS coronavirus in 2003 and was associated with slowing of the pandemic.  SARS and MERS subsided on their own (without vaccines).  The genomes of RNA viruses are less stable than DNA viruses, and decreased virulence through mutation is one mechanism thought to promote greater viral transmission, which in this case could mean less incapacitating and lethal in order to live and move about to promote spread.  It's not conclusive of a definitive shift by any means, but spotting the ORF7a deletion in different parts of the world speaks to real time evidence of viral changes that can have substantial effects on the natural course of this bug based on past experience with SARS.

Wear a mask you dumbasses!

You can't wear a mask while working out on anything that gives a heart rate increase. That's why opening gyms was so damn stupid. I'm in relatively good shape and can fly up 4-5 flights of stairs like nothing without breathing any harder at all. When this first started I tried to go up 3 flights of stairs but kept the mask on and I thought I was going to pass out. Felt like I just ran a mile at 10000 ft and couldn't get my wind back for a bit

My favorite is that Trump's sycophants want to claim NY/IL/MI as a win and average them into the national numbers now...totally ignoring the fact that their kiss orange God's ass governors used Trump's do whatever you want policy and subsequently turned into a shitshow.

I’m not calling you out personally because you obviously are one of the good guys wearing a mask. That said this is a really weak excuse and isn’t an out we should allow anyone to use.
Wearing a simple piece of cloth over your face doesn’t make working out anymore difficult. No one is saying they need an N95. Just cover your nose and mouth. It’s really not hard.

I was in good shape to when all this started.  Was hitting the gym 4 days/week.  But after 3 plus months, and having giving on on our purchased "Total Gym", I'm more like this now.

Maybe those super thin disposable ones with big gaps that don't protect you from much anything might be able to not hinder it. The right fitting cloth one I designed has 4 layers of different materials for maximum mechanical and electro-static filtration and that fucker wiped me out immediately.

That’s my point. No one is saying you have to wear that kind of mask. Just simply covering your mouth makes a difference and is all anyone is asking. The excuses for not wearing a simple cloth face covering are all 100% bullshit and we shouldn’t let people bullshit us.

quoting myself here as a follow-up.  This is a an excerpt from an email I received today from the Oregon Health Authority.  Note they are using a 4 week window to assess severity and end result incidence of death:

Quote

What we’re learning

Oregonians are at greater risk of becoming infected with COVID-19 than they have been since before Governor Kate Brown issued the first stay-at-home orders. Our latest projections show we are most likely heading toward the worst-case scenario we projected last week – approximately 900 new infections per day by the end of July.

COVID-19 cases have increased each week for four straight weeks statewide, and it is spreading faster in the community. While large workplace outbreaks have driven increased cases in recent weeks, sporadic cases (those with no clear link to another case) account for a growing percentage of new cases.

The severity of illness among new cases of COVID-19 is lower than it was early in the outbreak. Despite the increase in cases in the past four weeks, the number of hospitalizations and deaths remain well below their peaks. Emergency department visits due to symptoms of the disease are still below 1 percent.

More younger people are contracting COVID-19. The median age of people with newly diagnosed COVID-19 infection is declining as more cases are being diagnosed in people younger than 50 years of age.

Oregon’s health care system has not been overtaxed by COVID-19 cases – yet. However, hospital capacity could be overwhelmed this summer if cases continue to surge.

If decreased severity equals decreased incidence of chronic pulmonary fibrosis in younger non-hospitalized and otherwise healthy people, that would be very, very welcome.

You're right. I'm so used to wearing these I forgot about that kind. I haven't used one to work out but it's not unreasonable to expect it on one that fits that loosely.

I think it's some doc in MN or somewhere up north who is relating those n of ones to the fact that people can and do get the flu each year by coronoviruses, therefore he concludes that ALL coronaviruses are known to NOT elicit sustained immunity. I think by now the medical field should stop believing shit about coronaviruses not named SARS-Cov-2 should apply to the latter. That's the myths begin and spread faster than the virus itself.

The studies I saw on the original SARS virus on a quick pubmed search showed protective levels of antibodies out to 3 years in SARS recovered patients. I didn’t see any that looked out further.

One thing I saw about the common cold coronaviruses is that the first thing they do when they establish a beachhead in the lungs is knock out all the T cells. The T cells are the immune system’s long term memory, so if none are around when the battle with the virus is on, you can’t build long term immunity. I did read about a study on covid 19 that did find T cells activated against it, so that’s somewhat encouraging.
