Huey Lewis

His early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83,I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Not sure if pointed out before but these guys had like zero egos and made music just to have fun and not really try to impress anybody.

One of my dad's buddies drove their bus for a tour, and he said that they were the nicest bunch of guys he'd ever been around.

Not me.....obviously.  Still can't believe they let that get by back then.

Eh, they were the safest band in the world, with multiple big hits under their belts.  I imagine MTV gave the review task to some intern who couldn't even bother to pay attention.

I saw them in a strip mall bar on some random weekday years after they were big. I was floored by how professional they were. Here they are in some shitty town, performing at some shitty bar. And yet they really cared how it sounded. By the third song it was fucking obvious how much they must have had to practice to get the songs that tight. Walked away super impressed.

I never saw him live but I always seemed to notice his tour posters/announcements for upcoming shows in casinos, amusement parks & small halls. He kept working long after his records were being played over the air.

Just looked up some of his gigs on Concert Archives. Some head scratching billings in there. Didn't know he played The Backyard with Joe Cocker in '12. Or opened for The Police in '82. Wild.
