Grand Valley State offensive coordinator Morris Berger resigned Thursday, days after saying in a story for the school's newspaper that Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler's ability to lead was "second to none."

The resignation is effective immediately, the university said in a statement.

GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY

“Over the last 11 years I have taken great pride in the responsibility and privilege of being a teacher, coach, mentor, and a valued member of the community," Berger said in the statement. "I was excited and proud to be at Grand Valley, and am disappointed that I will not get the opportunity to help these players in 2020. However, I do not want to be a distraction to these kids, this great university, or Coach (Matt) Mitchell as they begin preparations for the upcoming season.”

In a story posted Jan. 23 in the Grand Valley Lanthorn, Berger was asked if he could have dinner with three historical figures, who would they be. He listed Hitler, President John F. Kennedy and Christopher Columbus.

"This is probably not going to get a good review, but I’m going to say Adolf Hitler," Berger, who has a history degree from Drury University, said, according to The Lanthorn. "It was obviously very sad and he had bad motives, but the way he was able to lead was second-to-none. How he rallied a group and a following, I want to know how he did that. Bad intentions of course, but you can’t deny he wasn’t a great leader."

Berger was suspended Monday, pending an investigation, a week after he was hired by Mitchell.

“Nothing in our background and reference checks revealed anything that would have suggested the unfortunate controversy that has unfolded," Mitchell said in the statement. "This has been a difficult time for everyone. I accepted Coach Berger’s resignation in an effort for him to move on and for us to focus on the team and our 2020 season.”

Berger arrived at Grand Valley after coaching tight ends at Texas State. He also spent two seasons on staff at Oklahoma State, where he was an offensive quality control coach, and three seasons at Missouri.

If he was such a great leader why did he lose? There’s the weirdest participation trophy/moral victory mindset when it comes to the nazis & the confederacy.

He lost because he ended up fighting both the Russians and Americans at the same time. Japan attacking us really messed up his plan, as did British resistance.

You missed the point he literally brainwashed and convinced an entire population of humanity to believe the shit he was spewing. That takes skills to do that to a literally entire country.  That’s what the coach was alluding too.  But yeah maybe don’t pick a man that wanted to eradicate human beings.  He could have picked Bruno Mars. That dude has convinced tons of people he’s a good singer
All of this.

He was a superior leader. I and everybody else likely doesnt condone his actions, but all of us could learn from him like that even though he was a sick man. Terrible human but he had followers.

yea there was also the part where he was pretty much everything he was trying to eradicate

there was a chance he was part Jewish

what was known of his lineage was that he was just the product of what would be known today as "fun baby making"

he was sickly

he had little in the way of physical strength

he had very little in the way of stature

he was a goofy fuck

and while he was clearly a long term shitty military leader (in large part because of his inability to accept the loss of a battle while eying the win of the war) and he was a giant piece of shit there is no reason people have to try and deny or obfuscate the fact that a goofy as fuck, pipsqueak, low level officer of no repute was able to somehow able to take over a nation and unify it to do a lot of horrible shit that took a massive toll on their own population and country as well as the others they were against

worse yet I would imagine if you looked through the faculty of his university (and any other that would immediately suspend him and work to fire him) you would find at least a couple of faculty that have studied and written on hitler extensively and that have commented on his ability to unify a country and push them to do massive things (even if those things were totally fucked) and most people of they took those comments or writings without a full context would taken them to be glorifying, admiring, or praising hitler

along with that a number of others that are critical of this coach are probably running around expressing their outrage in a che guava shirt they have been wearing for the last week or they have a lenin or stalin portrait on their wall and some chairman mao phrases tattooed on them somewhere

it was a stupid comment by the coach and as a football coach he should know to stick to football shit, but it was also a massive overreaction by the crowd that simply cannot break down what someone is trying to say (even if it comes out stupid or was a stupid topic to bring up) and instead hear one thing like hitler or nazis and they flip the fuck out and act like fucking children in the fetal position

He fucked up strategically the moment he invaded Russia without putting Britain to bed first. From that point on he was so cracked out (his personal doctor was a fucking nut - the Romanovs had the same problem in WWI) he just kept making bigger and bigger mistakes and more and more frequently icing out his generals.

Hitler was more a manipulator of people rather than an actual leader and was a result of the horrendous circumstances in Germany after the First World War. People were burning wheelbarrows full of paper money for warmth. Being a ‘Nazi’ not only meant you were in their political party but also a zealot. Most Germans were not actual Nazis. The reason was he was able to be successful is thru misdirection and distraction.

Scapegoating the Jews and communists was not without a perceived social justification. During The very end of World War One, the German Army had actually started winning and the tide of the stalemate was swinging in their favor. At that very moment communist activists let strikes at factories who’s bank owners were primarily Jewish. With all of the manpower at both fronts, the factories were shut down. Then, shockingly and without notice the Kaiser abdicated. The troops were left at the front and there was power vacuum. The rag-tag band of “diplomats” from Germany did not represent the German people in surrender but rather, just gave the victors whatever they wanted. This was Hitlers “great stab in back.”

With Hitler the average German was happy and glad that the economy was improving, services and standard of living was improving and exceeding the victors, infrastructure was being rebuilt, but very importantly a National pride was being restored which had a new importance. Hitlers ‘fuck you’ attitude toward the other powers was something people cheered since they felt they had been taken advantage by the powerful forces who governed.

truly, the parallels from then and our experience with our gov today is frightening.

Great leaders inspire and empower great people around them. Hitler surrounded himself with a gaggle of incompetent, groveling, back-stabbing, untalented, idiotic losers that make Surly posters seem intelligent by comparison, and that’s saying a lot. If you want to read something truly amazing, read all the bullshit as his cronies fought to replace him during the very last days of the war-just insane.

Take it to Cloak Room

Im not comparing political ideals rather how people of many countries and all parties take in their information and make political decisions. This is a world wide issue.

This has much more to do with the Cold War than Trump, but Surly gonna knee jerk.

It's not convincing a population to believe you if you kill everyone who disagrees with you. Ruling by fear and intimidation is not leadership, it just forces those who disagree with you to keep their heads down and their mouths shut in hopes that they're not the next in line for the gas chamber. Any meathead can be a dictator and mass murder isn't a skill. It's the basest, most animalistic way of solving problems. Great leaders are honest, thoughtful, just, and fair. They're not homicidal madmen who seize power through lies.

Anyone who thinks Hitler was a great leader has no business teaching/coaching young people because they clearly don't know what great leadership is.

I am not saying he was a great leader because of course as you stated he did terrible shit and in the end fucked over his own country

and there is something to be said about the fear and intimidation, but in the case of hitler he had to get to the point where he was able to have that fear and intimidation and that is where his ability to do "things" has some uniqueness to it

it is not like he was charles manson, a totally freaky looking weird fuck that just had to get a few airheads to do horrible murders for him or david koresh that was another goofy fuck that managed to get 20 or 30 people to be convinced to move to Waco and then burn themselves up (moving to Waco the big WTF)

hitler got millions upon millions moving in the same direction (yes a horrible direction)....to do that at some point you are no longer just dealing with a few easy to convince sheep or clueless dumb fucks and you are convincing a lot of other people that are hard core, stone cold, fear and intimidation types that you are their leader and then they go out and enforce your fucked up shit with fear and intimidation

the contrast to me would kim jung un he is another goofy fuck for sure and a total dumb ass that rules through fear and intimidation, but he was not the one that built that machine he is just the fuckwit that sits at the top of it because of being in the genetic fuck up club.....there is not a chance in hell that he would ever have been able to START what he oversees now he would have been killed and eaten in the first month and really he is probably barely hanging on to it as is, but what was started before him is so firmly in place now that no one knows who to trust to talk to about "hey lets off this asshole and take shit over"

hitler was the one that in spite of being pretty much everything he vilified was able to get that system of fear and intimidation in place with millions upon millions of people and with thousands of much more fit, intelligent, hard core, and seemingly charismatic people doing his bidding for him and all scared to even consider talking about taking him out because of the fear machine he put in place

Yeah, kids can be little shits sometimes.  So, your leaderships skills are pretty on point.  What's your secret?

I sure as fuck wouldn't pay someone (the type of money that most OC's make) that would chose Hitler, of all the people in history, to have lunch with.  Perception matters...I has no cry for that moron.

Oh, from a career standpoint his answer was unquestionably rock fucking stupid. The degree to which it was also factually stupid is the argument here.

I mean, I sort of get what he's trying to say, but I would fire him, if nothing else, for his lack of judgment in not understanding why that is not an acceptable answer for a public figure (if part of your job is speaking to media, even as an assistant coach, you are a public figure). But add to it what has been pointed out--that characterizing it as "leadership" and implying it can be carried over into non-genocidal life like college football--is so wrong that it is worthy of mockery and firing.

I'm not interest in debating the merits/abilities of Hitler, but the SS move out of country to avoid getting caught toward the end of WWII is pretty fucking impressive in the cut bait and run world of planning. Most were eventually tracked down, but not all.

Very true, but that was more a function of the zealots who leveraged religious ideals to gain support from Catholics and even from the Pope.

I bet Mussolini was a mimosa guy.  He seems like a mimosa guy.

He'd talk a huge game at brunch about crushing shots and blowing lines later that night, black out 3/4 of the way through the bottomless hour, and have to get carried home by the guy who's way too comfortable with breakfast beers.
