Title says it all. Holy shit.

Among other WTF questions I have, how/why did the college allow him to live in on-campus housing?

The father of a former Sarah Lawrence College student allegedly extorted and abused several students from the prestigious university and forced at least one student into prostitution over the past decade, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

Lawrence Ray "exploited and abused young women and men emotionally, physically and sexually for his own financial gain," ultimately extorting approximately $1 million from five victims, said Geoffrey Berman, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Ray, 60, is charged in an indictment with extortion, sex trafficking, forced labor trafficking, money laundering and more.

Prosecutors said the investigation was prompted by an April 2019 magazine article, an apparent reference to an article titled "The Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence," published on New York magazine's The Cut. The private liberal arts college has about 1,700 students and is located in Yonkers, New York.

Ray allegedly ensnared many of his victims while they were teenagers, Berman said, and his alleged initial victims were his daughter's college roommates.

He moved into on-campus housing with his daughter and her roommates during their sophomore year in late 2010 and began "therapy" sessions with some roommates in which he presented himself as a father figure who could solve their psychological problems, the indictment states.

In the summer of 2011, several of the roommates lived with Ray at his Manhattan apartment, where he worked to gain their trust and alienate them from their parents, the indictment says.

Berman said Ray allegedly used "physical, psychological, and sexual abuse" to make his victims confess to invented wrongdoing.

He then allegedly compelled them to make substantial payments to him and directed them to obtain money for him by draining their parents' savings, opening credit lines, soliciting contributions from acquaintances, selling real estate ownership, and performing forced labor and even prostitution, Berman said.

"Over nearly a decade Ray coerced and extorted nearly $1 million in payments from five different victims," Berman said.

In one particular instance, he allegedly used fear, violence and coercion to force one victim to engage in commercial sex acts to repay debts she didn't actually owe, Berman said. That victim allegedly was forced to work as a prostitute for more than four years, and Ray allegedly collected more than $500,000 from her, Berman said.

Berman said Ray allegedly "sexually groomed" that victim beginning when she was a college student, collecting sexually explicit photos and other personal information he then used to coerce her into engaging in commercial sex acts.

He also used violence; in one instance, he tied the woman to a chair, placed a bag over her head and nearly suffocated her, prosecutors said.

In 2013, Ray forced some of the victims to do manual labor at a family member's home in Pinehurst, North Carolina, to pay off these fictional debts, the indictment says.

When Ray was arrested Tuesday morning in Piscataway, New Jersey, one of his daughter's roommates and another female victim were in the residence, Berman said.

Ray had an initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon in Manhattan. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. CNN has reached out to Ray's public defender for comment.

Sarah Lawrence College spokeswoman Patricia Pasquale confirmed that Ray is the parent of a former student.

"The charges contained in the indictment are serious, wide-ranging, disturbing, and upsetting. As always the safety and well-being of our students and alumni is a priority for the College," Pasquale said.

"In April 2019, New York Magazine published a range of accusations about this former parent. At that time, the College undertook an internal investigation regarding the specific activities alleged in the article to have occurred on our campus in 2011; the investigation did not substantiate those specific claims."

The indictment did not detail which, if any, of the alleged criminal activity occurred on campus.

Pasquale said the college has not been contacted by the Southern District of New York but will cooperate in the investigation.

Predators and prey always have a way of finding each other in these situations. This is on the very extreme side of the scale, but we all knew a sheltered girl who went off to college and just so happened to attract the biggest piece of shit on campus who then methodically mentally and emotionally abuses her until she essentially becomes his property. I'm assuming there is an element of that here for some of the victims.

Anybody else just really impressed that he pulled this off at Sarah Lawrence College?  Not like he did this with dumb girls at Miami of Ohio or girls shopping for MrS degrees at Tufts.  He pulled this off with ultra feminist, very smart co-eds at a place on par with Bryn Mawr, Wellesley, and Smith College.  I hope he dies, but not before they name a freshmen orientation session for his ass.

I kind of think it's easier to pull off at one of those ultra feminist high rankings schools than it would be at MofOH or Tufts. If you have a bunch of girls with almost a religious fervor about something, it doesn't take much to redirect that fervor.

A buddy of mine married a Sarah Lawrence girl. Her college friends at the wedding/reception were all insufferable and came across as probably pretty smart, but naive as hell. She ended up running away to India with her yoga instructor and leaving him with two kids under 3.

It's a lot like aggy.  You grow up in that kind of socio-political atmosphere, without ever having your notions seriously challenged, you have a lot of blind spots.  Add in the small, cloistered private college environment and their thought processes are rarely affected by reality.

Insane in the brain.  Literally and figuratively.

These people are idiots.

Anyone who spent time with Talia Ray during her first year at Sarah Lawrence College heard her talk about her father. He was a truth teller, she’d explain, who’d been silenced by a group of powerful, vindictive men. He’d been sent to prison for his heroic efforts to save her and her younger sister from their abusive mother, and his incarceration was the result of deep-seated government corruption. Talia, who had grown up in New Jersey, was old for a freshman and had become the de facto leader of her group of friends, organizing their housing for the next year at Slonim Woods 9, a drab two-story brick dorm in the middle of campus. So in late September 2010, at the beginning of sophomore year, when Talia told her housemates that her father was getting out of prison and needed to crash with them for a while, they were mostly unfazed.

This is where you tell your friend to go fuck themselves. Yeah, no, your dad can't crash at your place after getting out of prison.

“I didn’t want to go back home, and this was my alternative,” Daniel says. “Part of why I got in a cult at all was because I had no idea how one finds a place to live in New York.”

I once moved in with a girl I was dating because I needed a place to live.  I wish I would've known I could just join a cult.

He probably preyed on a lot of girls that had little to no parental guidance either.  I can't imagine a scenario where something like that could fly completely under the radar for so long if they had parents that even tried to be involved or interested in their lives.  Even if the girls tried to keep their parents at a distance.  I doubt he was charming their fathers on parents' weekend.

And really, the school needs to be raked over the coals for letting this guy live in student housing.  That's probably the biggest WTF of the whole story.

Seems a little specific.

The $500,000 in 4 years number jumped out at me as well. I assume she must have also taken home some of the cut. That is either some high volume work, or it is some high class work, and probably a little of both. Let's say she took home 1/3 of the revenue. That's $250,000. So, $750,000/4 is $188k/year. If she worked every night of the year, that's $515/night. That's not realistic, so go with 1/3 of the nights per year. She's bringing in $1600 a date. I'm not familiar with Escortland, but I assume even for the Manhattan footprint, $1600 for the date means she's got to be worth it and probably smoking hot to boot.

There, with that logic posted out there on the Internet, I'm sure an expert will sprint here immediately to tell me why that's wrong, which is all I'm looking for here. You assume she was working a real job and we're not talking about a hooker on a corner. Maybe it was once a week and she was banking $3600 or something. I don't know. How hot or non-hot does she sound to one of the degenerate prostitution aficionados of this board?

In 2014, Claudia began working as an escort under a nom de guerre that was a combination of Larry’s daughters’ names. Her website advertised services for $8,000 a night. She would give her profits to Larry in order to pay for the damage she believed she’d done in North Carolina.

that is from the really long article linked upthread. seems kinda excessive

She must be really good at some things and/or willing to do some things.
