TOMMY MANGINO  BIO

North Texas -- Quality Control, Offense

Mangino was named an offensive quality control coach to Seth Littrell's staff on March 1, 2019.  Mangino joins the Mean Green following three seasons in the same role at Kentucky, working primarily with wide receivers. Wildcats receiver Lynn Bowden, Jr. earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2018 after hauling in 67 catches for 745 yards and a team-high five touchdowns.

Mangino spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons as the wide receivers coach at Iowa State. Allen Lazard earned All-Big 12 honorable mention recognition in 2015 after catching 56 passes for 808 yards and six touchdowns. In 2014, four different Cyclones, three of which were wide receivers, caught 40 or more passes. The Cyclones were just one of 12 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision to do so. Lazard was named an honorable mention for offensive freshman of the year in the Big 12 after posting 45 receptions for 593 yards and three scores.

Prior to his time in Ames, Mangino was an offensive graduate assistant on the staff at Arkansas, where his focus was with the Razorbacks’ wide receivers.  Before heading to Fayetteville, Mangino served on the coaching staff of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. He served as offensive coordinator in 2012, as the Blue Dragons tied or broke 15 school records that still stand, including a team record in pass completions and individual records in total offense, passing yards, rushing yards and receptions.  Mangino served as the passing game coordinator for Hutchinson in 2011. That season, the Blue Dragons set a school record with 601 points on the season. In 2010, Mangino was responsible for HCC’s quarterbacks and wide receivers.  Combined across his three seasons at Hutchinson, Mangino’s quarterbacks threw for 7,200 yards and 78 touchdowns. Among the players who Mangino worked with was 2013 NFL Draft first-round pick Cordarrelle Patterson, who won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 2018.

Mangino served as an offensive graduate assistant at Kansas for two seasons (2008-09). Mangino primarily worked the quarterbacks and wide receivers, helping quarterback Todd Reesing break nine school records and NFL wideout Dez Briscoe earn All-Big 12 honors. He was on-staff when the Jayhawks defeated Minnesota in the 2008 Insight Bowl.

Mangino was a two-sport athlete at Washburn University, playing football  & baseball.  Mangino earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Washburn in 2008. He completed his master’s degree in health, sport and exercise science at Kansas in 2010.

He is married to the former Danielle Huff, and the couple have three sons, Vincenzo, Dominic and Roman.

Also some people on the other hs thread were talking about Wimberly and Geronomo's district. They have appealed to the UIL to be removed from that district. Basically they would both kill every team and most of the other teams dont have sub varsity's so scheduling would be a nightmare for the JV's.

What's the usual timing (or time) for changing schools when you're a Texas HS Football coach?

Usually December through March or so, but there are a lot if variables. There can be a chain reaction to someone leaving a school creating another opening at the school the replacement comes from , board/sup politics, guys can retire late in the school year to potentially help one of their assistant's chances of getting the job- stuff like that. There is typically more turnover in a realignment year also, which just happened at the beginning of February

Alamo Heights hires Ron Rittiman from SA Johnson to take over as head coach. Rittiman had been head coach at Johnson since it opened in 2008. Rode perhaps the easiest playoff path in history and a 1 point upset win over Steele to take them on a state semifinal run in 2013 with his son at QB. They lost to Katy 56-0 I think in the semi game. I don’t know that he ever won a playoff game outside of that season. They were still a pretty solid program though. Heights has been down lately, maybe this change will get them going.

Johnson has 1 playoff win since 2013.  I would have thought the AH job would draw more interest -- you can win state at AH.

Rodney Webb (Rockwall) backed out last minute. The only reason I saw for Webb to take that job was he's close to retirement and was trying to bump up his pay. Heights is paying 145k

Anyone got the dirt on this one?  Doesn't seem like a job you part ways from unless something happened.

They tried to force Walsh out several years ago after he got a DWI.  At the time, he said he'd step down if they hired his top assistant.  They said no, and he fought it and kept his job.

The deck must have been stacked against him this time

Saw that Jordan Battles, QB at Brandies is now enrolling at Judson.

Their QB the past 2 yrs, Mike Chandler, played his frosh & soph years at Johnson HS. The Rockets going full Lincoln Riley at the QB spot. But I did hear that Battles wanted to move to WR or DB (which is what he would play in college) and his Brandeis coaches weren’t having it. Hence his move.

Might be all for naught though if the season is cancelled. Damn shame, I thought Harlingen had the right pieces to go all the way this year. Guess we’ll never know.

The Allen Eagles are a perennial state championship contender, and they will be again in 2020 with the return of top talents like WRs Bryson and Blaine Green.

There was somewhat of a question mark at quarterback as the Eagles graduated Raylen Sharpe, who accounted for more than 3,300 yards and 36 touchdowns in 2019.

But a potential weakness may now be a strength heading into 2020.

Earlier this spring, we learned that Parker Wells (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) had transferred to Allen from Sachse. Weeks completed 67-of-118 (56.8 percent) of his passes for 885 yards and scored 14 total touchdowns for the Mustangs in 2019.

The eligibility will depend on the Previous Athletic Participation Form (PAPF) and if the previous school checks the "transferred for athletic purposes" box. If that box is checked and the prior school believes Booty moved for athletic purposes then eligibility will be reviewed by the District Executive Committee and a ruling will be made. If a ruling is made that the player is ineligible, the player's family has the right to appeal to the UIL State Executive Committee.

But that's not all.

The Orange County Record reported on Wednesday that JSerra Catholic quarterback General Booty (6-2, 180) has also transferred to Allen and Booty has updated his social media to reflect the change.

Booty, who passed for over 1,000 yards and six scores in 2019, is the nephew of former LSU standout John David Booty. Booty played at San Antonio Cornerstone Christian in 2018 and has been offered by Liberty.

SA Johnson hires Mark Soto from San Marcos as new head coach. Interdasting hire. Soto never really did great in San Marcos but he did put together a 10 win season there recently, not easy to do.

He was in a dogshit district then.  He went 1-9 both of the last two years, with the win over 0-10 NB Canyon both years.

That's the most WTF hire I've ever seen.

Arlington ISD and the Texas Rangers announced on Friday a four-year agreement for AISD teams to play varsity football games at Globe Life Park.

Globe Life Park, the former home of the Texas Rangers, was retro-fitted for football and other sports in the winter and served as home field for the XFL’s Dallas Renegades.

GLP will primarily serve as the home field for Arlington High and Arlington Martin, although every AISD program will play at least one home game at the facility.

“I think for Arlington ISD to partner with the community and the Texas Rangers is a great opportunity for our kids," Arlington ISD athletic director Eric White said. "It’s an unbelievable venue that’s renovated to fit football, from the locker rooms, to the playing surface. It’ll be a first class experience for the student-athletes of Arlington ISD.

"We’ve got some great matchups. All six schools will get a home game at Globe Life Park; the band, drill team, support groups will get to perform there as well. We are looking at hosting band contests at the facility and maybe even some soccer games as well.”

Globe Life Park will also be utilized for playoff games starting in the bi-district round should any Arlington ISD programs earn the right to host a first-round playoff game. The facility will host playoff games in every round of the playoffs from the area round up to the state semifinals.

The Texas Rangers new indoor stadium, Globe Life Field, is tentatively scheduled to host high school football playoff games as well in the area round and the regional semifinals.

Arlington ISD, which still has two on-campus football facilities for their six high schools (Cravens Field at Lamar High and Wilemon Field at Sam Houston High), has plans to open a third on-campus facility at Martin High School along with renovations to Cravens and Wilemon.

White didn’t rule out that even with a third on-campus facility opening in the future that AISD would not still use Globe Life Park for football games.

Below is the complete tentative schedule for varsity football games at Globe Life Park for the 2020 football season:

August 27 Euless Trinity vs Arlington Lamar

August 28 Lake Travis vs Arlington Martin

August 29 Dallas Carter vs Arlington Seguin

September 3 DeSoto vs Arlington Bowie

September 4 Cedar Hill vs Arlington

September 11 Keller Fossil Ridge vs Arlington

September 17 Keller Central vs Arlington Sam Houston

September 18 Southlake Carroll vs Arlington Martin

September 25 Arlington vs Arlington Martin

October 2 Grand Prairie vs Arlington

October 9 Arlington Lamar vs Arlington Martin

October 23 South Grand Prairie vs Arlington

October 30 Grand Prairie vs Arlington Martin

November 6 Arlington Bowie vs Arlington

Read an article he was a friend and greatly respected by Rittiman (outgoing coach) and his mentor is DW Rutledge,  likely received their endorsement.   Still,  for such a prominent program...

Johnson’s not a very prominent school, only about 12 years old. Not a whole lot of football success. Judson is who you’re thinking of. Unless my meter is broken.

Warren Trahan has come out of retirement and headed back to Bay City as the AD.

His son Beau was one of Mack Browns first recruits at Texas.

Much needed as Bay City has really fallen off the past decade.

We drive through Hermleigh on the way to Denver.  It's a little dump of a town, but they have a brand new HS and artificial turf football and softball fields, too, so they have money from somewhere.  There is an Allsup's there, so they got that going for them.

Things just got interesting in Central Texas...

https://dentonrc.com/sports/football-former-guyer-head-coach-john-walsh-hired-at-san-marcos/article_67c05ac0-ba73-54d2-9606-763418d7f011.html

Football: Former Guyer head coach John Walsh hired at San Marcos

Walsh inherits a San Marcos team that has struggled in recent years. The Rattlers went 1-9 in 2019 and 2018, missing the playoffs both seasons. In 2017, San Marcos went 10-2 and won a district title before falling to Spring Westfield in the area round of the playoffs.

The Rattlers are in the highly competitive District 26-6A, which includes defending 6A Division II champion Austin Westlake and perennial powerhouse Lake Travis.

(Wonder if this is just a stepping stone to another big-time Central Texas HS Football job??)
