Our RBs are both sophomores, QB was a first-year starting senior with limited arm & limited mobility but always played his ass off. I know Stevens QB was a sophomore. They made the plays in crunch time and deserved the W, but I still think we would give Westlake a better game. As in we might’ve lost 56-7 while Stevens might lose 63-7. Steele I see as like a 42-14 type Westlake win.

I really can’t imagine that Westlake breezing through the season like this will help them against NS. I remember 2 years ago the LT fans talking mad shit on the 6A site before the NS game. NS stomped the fuck out of them. I do think this Westlake team can give them a better game but it’ll be tough.

I agree with all of this. I always prefer a scrappy team that wins with heart, like your Harlingen team. Now when we played Harlingen around 2013, you guys had an amazing QB (dude was tall and could throw) and a top-notch RB. Your team this year looks more a grind-you-down with defense and control the ball team, and the QB was probably a good runner but had a weak, soft throw.

I agree that previous, tough games help prepare you for tough teams. Hays is still playing and we beat them 59-6, so that's probably our best win. Our team is really loaded with a stout defense, a D-1 WR and a QB with offers to basically everywhere. What's interesting about Westlake is that we are one of the smallest 6A schools with an enrollment of 2,770. It's a strong program with great coaching (are you listening Turtle Tom Herman?) and a lot of wealthy families who can send their kids to strength programs, etc. We are always out-matched physically but we make up for it with a tough mindset and amazing coaching.

Nothing can prepare you for North Shore's speed. Last time we played them we took them to OT in the state championship with Sam at the helm. I would pick them to beat us but we've pulled off some upsets in the past, like when we stopped Allen's 57-game win-streak that same season. Todd Dodge can coach and if we make it to that round, I wouldn't be too surprised if we somehow found a way to win. But Cibolo Steele might have something to say about that.

Here's our game w Hays:

One issue with the splits in 5A  was allowing automatic opt ups which was causing the D2 high end number to be increased to balance the two divisions in total numbers.  I think this last realignment, they were a little more stringent in granting these.  In 6A , you could see the UIL really trying to help the El Paso area schools stay in one division along with some of the other Panhandle schools for travel purposes.    Really other than extreme travel situations, opt ups should be a no go.  The Laredo schools were always doing this much to their determent when if they would have left things alone like they have now, they might have had three or four district games against Corpus, SA or RGV schools for which maybe two each season would have been a two to three hour road trip which for the West Texas schools ain't nothing.  The upside with the splits in football, is all the other sports play in a different alignment which mitigates travel concerns somewhat.

But Cibolo Steele might have something to say about that.

They should've lost to Round Rock (were it not for 3 fumbles by the RR RB).  They're not special.  Their QB Wyatt Beagel is going to Ark St but I was perplexed because his arm is not scary.  He's very quick though.  They run a good zone read with him and the RB.  If you can stop that and hang onto the ball, you'll win fairly easily I think.

In every classification, the largest cutoff number is around double the smallest. 2A is 105-229, a little more than double. 3A is 230-514, a little more than double, 4A is 515 to 1229, a little more than double, and 5A is 1230-2219, a little less than double.

6A starts at 2220, so if the largest schools are around double that, 4440, I think that’s reasonable.

There are actually only 4 schools in 6A whose enrollment is considerably higher than that and 3 of those schools are the Plano schools and they suck anyway.

This isn’t an entire division problem, its not even an 8 school problem, it’s an Allen high school problem. They have considerably more kids than even the Plano schools. They’re at 7k, they are a sole outlier.

as good a time as any to revisit this classic

Probably going to go to Rouse v Liberty Hill this weekend, hope Rouse can make it a good game.

I'll probably be there too.  Might travel up to Waco to see Tomball Memorial vs Cedar Hill (wife's friend plays QB for Tomball).

Liberty Hill's still waiting for someone to give them a game this year though.  LH blew out Leander Glenn 51-0.  Glenn lost to Rouse 28-27.  None of these 5A teams know what to do with that slot T offense they run.

6A & 5A region semis.

This is a strange week -- lots more fairly shitty matchups with really good teams playing fairly mediocre teams than you'd expect in round three.  Every one of these brackets will look a lot more fun next week.

Class 6A Division I

Region I

Euless Trinity (9-1) vs Allen (10-0), 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Arlington’s Globe Life Park

Southlake Carroll (9-1) vs Arlington Martin (10-1), 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Arlington’s Globe Life Park

Region II

Duncanville (8-1) vs Spring Westfield (8-1), 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Belton's Tiger Field

DeSoto (9-1) Vs Spring (9-0), 7 p.m. Saturday at Waco’s McLane Stadium

Region III

Katy Tompkins (10-0) vs Galena Park North Shore (12-0), 1 p.m. Thursday at Katy’s Legacy Stadium

Fort Bend Ridge Point (7-2) vs Humble Atascocita (7-2), 1 p.m. Saturday at Houston’s TDECU Stadium

Region IV

Cibolo Steele (8-3) vs Laredo United South (5-3), 1 p.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi’s Buccaneer Stadium

Austin Westlake (10-0) vs San Antonio Stevens (7-4), 1 p.m. Saturday at Bastrop’s Memorial Stadium

Tompkins-NS is clearly the most interesting matchup out of this bunch.  Everyone rightly wants to talk about Milroe, but the Tompkins D has allowed only 106 points all season and its first-string outscored the Cy-Fair offense last week.

I'll also let my nuts hang and predict that this is the year Martin finally gets over the hump and beats SLC.  It'll be a 54-52 type game whoever wins.

Those two Dallas-Houston matchups in R2 look awfully tasty.  Spring handed Westfield its loss, so I'd say the Lions have the better chance to get a win this weekend.

Easy wins for Steele, Westlake, Atascocita, and Allen.

6A DII

Region I

Abilene (6-4) vs Denton Guyer (9-2), 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Arlington’s Globe Life Park

Haslet Eaton (9-3) vs Prosper (7-3), 11 a.m. Saturday at Arlington’s Globe Life Park

Region II

Cedar Hill (9-1) vs Tomball Memorial (11-0), 4 p.m. Saturday at Waco’s Waco ISD Stadium

Rockwall-Heath (10-2) vs Cypress Bridgeland (12-0), 1 p.m. Saturday at Waco’s McLane Stadium

Region III

Katy (10-1) vs Alvin Shadow Creek (6-3), 1 p.m. Saturday at Iowa Colony’s Freedom Field

Katy Taylor (9-2) vs Clear Falls (7-3), 12 p.m. Thursday at Webster’s Challenger-Columbia Stadium

Region IV

Austin Vandegrift (9-2) vs San Antonio Brennan (10-1), 2 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio’s Comalander Stadium

Buda Hays Consolidated (8-3) vs San Antonio Taft (8-3), 1 p.m. Thursday at Buda’s Shelton Stadium

This bracket is kind of ass, with Cedar Hill-Tomball Memorial the marquee matchup.  I think CH wins it easily, though, because they have a defense.  The TM D allows over 30 points per game and has allowed over 45 four times.

The Heath-Bridgeland game will likely have over 100 points scored, if you're into that.

Vandegrift-Brennan will be a competitive game between two teams with zero chance to win state.  Same for KT-CF.

Easy wins for Hays, Katy, Prosper, and Guyer.

Class 5A Division I

Region I

Red Oak (8-2) vs Lubbock Coronado (12-0), 1 p.m. Saturday at Wichita Falls’ Memorial Stadium

Mansfield Summit (6-4) vs Colleyville Heritage (8-0), 3 p.m. Saturday at Aledo's Bearcat Stadium

Region II

Denton Ryan (11-0) vs Longview (9-2), 2 p.m. Saturday at Mesquite’s Memorial Stadium

Highland Park (10-1) vs Frisco Lone Star (7-3), 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Arlington’s Globe Life Park

Region III

Fort Bend Hightower (5-4) vs Manvel (8-1), 3 p.m. Thursday at Iowa Colony’s Freedom Field

Cedar Park (11-0) vs New Braunfels Canyon (11-1), 1 p.m. Thursday at New Braunfels’ Cougar Stadium

Region IV

Victoria West (8-3) vs Corpus Christi Flour Bluff (10-1), 4 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio’s Alamo Stadium

Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial (11-0) vs San Antonio Southwest (6-6), 2 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio’s Heroes Stadium

This bracket is so shitty I can't decide on the best game.  Longview might be the 2nd-best team in the bracket, but Ryan is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than anyone else, so that game won't be close.  Canyon might be the worst 11-1 team in football history, so CP will beat them by 40.   SA Southwest started the year 0-6.  Coronado has scored 159 points in their two playoff games.  The Manvel-Hightower tilt might be the best game -- Hightower's 4 losses are by 24 total points (to Westfield, Paetow, Manvel, and Foster).  This bracket will be much more fun next week after the flotsam and jetsam is scraped away.  Easy wins for Heritage, Flour Bluff, and HP.  Query for the Coastal Bend fans: How did Flour Bluff get good regularly after decades of sucking?

Class 5A Division II

Region I

Canyon Randall (6-5) vs Wichita Falls Rider (9-2), 1 p.m. Thursday at Wichita Falls’ Memorial Stadium

Lubbock Cooper (10-1) vs Grapevine (9-3), 2 p.m. Thursday at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl

Region II

Aledo (9-1) vs Frisco (8-1), 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Frisco’s Ford Center

Lovejoy (12-0) vs Mansfield Timberview (10-1), 11 a.m. Thursday at Arlington’s Globe Life Park

Region III

Crosby (9-3) vs Huntsville (11-0), 1 p.m. Saturday at Shenandoah’s Woodforest Bank Stadium

Fort Bend Marshall (11-0) vs Nederland (9-3), 1 p.m. Saturday at Humble’s Turner Stadium

Region IV

Leander Rouse (10-1) vs Liberty Hill (10-0), 2 p.m. Saturday at Round Rock’s Reeves Stadium

Georgetown East View (7-4) vs Mission Pioneer (7-0), 7 p.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi’s Buccaneer Stadium

Speaking of flotsam and jetsam... I think either Carthage or Argyle would win state in this bracket.  Timberview-Lovejoy is the game I'd most like to see -- The only loss on those two resumes is to Aledo.  Lovejoy is averaging nearly 50 ppg; its lowest score is 31.  LH has allowed only 59 points all season, including 2 playoff shutouts; Marshall has only allowed 62, with 42 in the playoffs.  It'll be interesting to see if Helobius savior Eddie Lee Marburger can blow up against an East View team that would rather play O than D.  Easy wins for Huntsville, Marshall, LH, Aledo, Cooper, and Roho.

Yeah really hoping Pioneer can carry the RGV banner one more week.

Underestimate SA Taft at your own peril. They finally have a solid core together after getting pillaged by Brennan & Harlan opening. Their QB Malvern is a pretty underrated player. I’m actually picking Taft over Hays in that one.

Is that Eaton HS a new powerhouse in the making? I remember them winning the baseball state title a couple years ago, their 2nd or 3rd year open or something crazy. Now they’re making noise in the football playoffs. I know nothing of the area it’s at but to be 6A already it must be booming.

Flour Bluff made a full commitment sometime in the early 2000s to invest In their program, hire good coaches and get the community on board.  It also helps they’ve had an open enrollment policy which lured some of the better athletes from the CCISD attendance zones which got tired of mediocrity to just plain awful condition most of the CCISD football programs from Middle School up to High School, save CC Vets and Miller (for now).  This on top of being the ISD that covers the Island up to Port A, they get a lot of move ins from out of the area who seek a good ISD with a good athletic program and want to live by the beach and bay along with military kids whose parents work at the NAS or the Army Depot. .   We out here in Calallen get our share who want space and some acreage.

I will say under their current coach although they are winning, they’ve underachieved at times. They’ve been blessed with speed ( players have won some medals at State track) and size and have come up short and lost to teams they shouldn’t have lost to.

I don’t know if Eaton will be a power, but they should be competitive for a while. Until Northwest ISD builds another high school. It’s in North Fort Worth and that area is booming. New construction everywhere you look.

Just here to note that the Mustang Bowl is the coolest damn stadium in all of Texas high school football.

Why do you diss The Puncherdome like this?

But yeah, it's cool. I forced the family to take a detour through town to see it last time we drove to Denver.

Puncher dome is also great.  But for my money it’s the Mustang Bowl and Alamo Stadium as 1a and 1b. Not coincidentally, two WPA projects.  Time is ripe in America for something similar/nocloakroom.

when you have the church on your side, on a hill overlooking the home side, while making the visitors park by the cemetery, let me know a better "fuck with your opponent before they ever hit the field" set-up.  Oh, and there are dairies and chicken houses adjacent to the school property, to make folks from out of town hate the smell of money.

For a small-town stadium, I always liked Trojan Field in Windthorst with the home side seats built into the hill.

+1 on liking the Mustang Bowl.  Spur's Jones Stadium is also cool.

They could split regionally based on how many 6A schools are in each large area.  Austin, for example, has two 6A districts.  Put the upper eight teams in one division and the lower eight in another division and you get this:

"Big 6A" Austin-area schools (with enrollment):

  • Round Rock (3714)
  • Lake Travis (3401)
  • Del Valle (3337)
  • Cedar Ridge (2874)
  • Westwood (2858)
  • Bowie (2848)
  • Westlake (2833)
  • Stony Pt (2789)

"Small 6A" Austin-area schools:

  • Akins (2770)
  • Vandegrift (2761)
  • McNeil (2753)
  • Vista Ridge (2492)
  • Austin High (2359)
  • Hays (2351)
  • San Marcos (2309)
  • Hutto (2247)

I do think the demographics comment is an interesting one in regards to Hispanic communities vs rural/suburban White & African American communities. San Antonio has a rich football legacy, (I hail from the Alamo City) but I think the demographics idea is possibly valid.

However, I agree that coaching is the key. Since we've been a part of the Westlake community beginning in 2002, the community support was always there but and the team had good, if not great years. Now, Todd Dodge has taken the program to a level we've never seen before, where good players are put into a coaching system that is second to none. Believe it or not, last night's 62-3 score wasn't as close as the score indicated. I do think Westlake would also have won state in 2018 if we hadn't lost our QB, RB & center in the playoffs. Now SA Cibolo is a strong program and it's football, and they can beat us in two weeks, but don't count on it.

Texas could be great again if we had the right coach. Fuck you, Herman.

Sorry for the ramblings.

Man I’m so jealous of the current crop of Westlake football players. Played football at Westlake from 08-11. Got one year of Derek Long that had a really solid system going then he retires and we bring in Allman. I know we almost won state with him that year, but that senior class was making a playoff run regardless. We were stacked that year. Tanner Price, Bryce Hager, some damn good receivers, a solid defense. Christ that 09 game against trinity still hurts. But yeah Allman just wasn’t a good fit here. Then Todd Dodge comes in here and takes an already prominent program to the next level.

when you have the church on your side, on a hill overlooking the home side, while making the visitors park by the cemetery, let me know a better "fuck with your opponent before they ever hit the field" set-up.
When we played Seymour in Jr High, there were bucking chutes on one end.

Glad to hear and I'm sure I watched you play! You guys had some great teams and players, for sure, that made some really deep runs. I don't think the current crop of players is better than your years. In fact, a lot of the starters are smaller, skinnier, etc. The new teams may be a tad faster.

What really stands out is watching these Westlake teams on Fridays get better as the season progresses, and then watch a Texas game on Saturday and see a team that has no identity or core. Last year, the Chaps QB didn't even START until half-way through the season and he ended up throwing 6-7 TD passes in multiple playoff games. It's coaching. And I can't tell you how many times Westlake players are catching balls all alone in the secondary with no defenders in sight. The coaches just school their opponents. And after the first couple of possessions, the opponent somehow can't move the ball anymore. It's coaching. If you flipped the Westlake coaching staff with Texas, you would see Texas instantly improve and Westlake would be a mess.

I fully expect Westlake to regress after Dodge is gone. That dude is talented.

I'm going to the game on Saturday. Should be a blowout but Westlake will then probably face a good Steele team, then the colossus that is North Shore is looming.

@TreatyOak couldn’t agree more. It’s unreal how well they’re coached. I knew Dodge would put up video game numbers with our history of qb’s and skill position players. I wasn’t expecting him to turn our defense into the machine it is. Unreal to watch. Everyone knows their assignment, they fly to the ball, always wrap up and drive their feet instead of going to 2019 Texas defense style kill shots. Just an all out elite defense. That goal line stand against Austin high where we almost killed Charles Wright on 4th down was a thing of beauty.

And yeah we’ll regress when he’s gone but we’ll just go back to what we were results wise under Long and Allman. Dominate district and at least make the quarterfinals every year

Marathon, Texas...... Kind of wish I could have seen a game there when this town was in it's prime.....  Definitely on the bucket list when I move up state closer to some of these six man schools to take in the environment.

The Tomato Bowl.. Home of the Jacksonville Indians

The train disqualifies it. I’m partial to Lobo Stadium (Longview) - it can be magical when the hills fill.

But Mustang is great. There are a lot of fun and unique stadiums in Texas.

I once went to a Marathon@Fort Davis game.  FD had 30 players suited up.  Marathon had 8.  It was mercy-ruled on the first drive after halftime.

I played for Strake Jesuit -- we were the Crusaders. We went up to Waller to play the Bulldogs and I shit you not, they took the excuse of playing the Crusaders to fucking burn crosses. Which was really odd because about 1/3 of their team and all their best players were Black.

Playing games in the shadow of refineries was always fun too. Channelview and OG Galena Park (not North Shore) had stadiums in total hellscapes back in the day. I played my first HS game (and first game in Texas) at Channelview, who at the time had this Tim Tebow type at QB. Huge for a freshman -- like 6'2, 220 -- but pretty slow. He came lumbering around the corner on an option keeper and I knocked him the fuck out. Unfortunately he also knocked me the fuck out...And as I was coming to, the chemical stench hit me first. It was kinda like smelling salts...It helped me collect myself, because whenever I'd get a little concussed I'd get stuck in deja vu, this feeling of, oh yeah, I remember this game, I played it tomorrow and yesterday and will be playing it forever. That benzene aroma helped me realize I was in Texas and not Nashville.

I though Tompkins would do better against North Shore, but North Shore just toyed with them all game. 47-22 NS, but score not indicative of how lopsided this game was.

North Shore averaged like 10 yards a play and Milroe for Tompkins did not look good.

Dee Davis had about 400 yards total offense and 4 TDs rushing, 3 passing.  I think Milroe had 38 yards of total offense (or something like that).

Taft had a bigger team and had their way in the first half, but Hays kept it close somehow and actually went into half tied.  Then Hays made defensive adjustments and Taft didn't do shit.  62-41 Hays.  They get Brennan-Vandegrift winner.

Katy Taylor lost 10-9 to Clear Falls, but at least they don't have to play Katy next week.

Canyon kept it a lot closer than anyone expected, losing 27-16 to Cedar Park.

Roho beat Randall 28-7.  They'll get district mate Lubbock Cooper for the 2nd year in a row in the R Final.  Cooper beat Grapevine 22-19.

I’m a Duncanville guy.  Played there in the early 90’s.  Always talented, but we had a mediocre head coach - Doug Mccutchen.  He of the famed coin flip when he coached in Midland I believe.

Anyways, hoping Desoto beats Spring on Saturday, as Duncanville and Desoto had their regular season game cancelled.  From what I hear, Westfield came out ready to fight today and it backfired on them badly.  Multiple personal fouls, etc...

Milroe 10-21 for 50, 1 INT, 6 rushes for -11

I'm finally not angry about him decommitting.

Followup on this... Here's the box score: https://www.chron.com/sports/highschool/scoreboard/?site=default&mkt=houston&Season=2020&tpl=Boxscore&Sport=1&ID=370657&TeamID=79&SearchType=Teams

Total yardage: NS 603, KT 192

Milroe 10-21 for 50, 1 INT, 6 rushes for -11

I'm finally not angry about him decommitting.

If the QBs switched teams, the results would’ve been about the same. The rest of North Shore is just totally overwhelming.
