What does Asiatic mean when describing a person?

I'm reading With the Old Breed a WWII book written by EB Sledge. Twice now, one of the other soldiers is described as Asiatic.  I know this would normally mean of Asian origin; however, it seems to have a different connotation when using context clues.  Something possibly along the lines of an outcast, loner, or weirdo.  Google searches have not helped.
