Coronavirus Impact on Travel

So I did a little surfing yesterday and it looks like Canada currently requires 14 day self-quarantine for any international arrivals with no symptoms. Did I read that right? If so I’m thinking my 7 day July trip is a no-go.

Currently’? Does July start tomorrow on your calendar or something? I mean if I had to guess right now I’d say your trip probably doesn’t happen. 2 months ago we weren’t even in lockdown. I still thought it might be ok to get down to Costa Rica this spring. In other words who the fuck knows with this crap.

My question was whether I read the current status of quarantine correctly. If I did read it correctly then my comment about a no-go was my own presumption that it likely would not be lifted by July.

You read it correctly. The question is when it will be relaxed. It’s a wait and see.

I would hold off making any absolute assumptions until about a month before you are supposed to leave.  Latest I would leave it would be 2 weeks before.

All business travel has been cut off, and no planned vacation air travel any time soon.  Was fortunate to have snuck in a trip with the wife in late January, and a ski trip with the kids in February.  But next time that I go back through the airport and wearing a shemagh as my mask. I'll let y'all know how it turns out.

Interstate traffic is still way down. Had to drive 75 through GA today and traffic in ATL was nonexistent. Looks like rather than flying I’ll get to drive this a few times this summer. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings for it to stay a little lower volume than normal.

We canceled all business travel through July for now. The savings have been more than enough to cover the little bit we are off as of now.

This does not surprise me.  I think the airlines would be smart to put in instant testing like Emirates has done.  But, if countries require folks entering to quarantine for two weeks (if you have an instant test that is negative before getting onto the flight or when entering the country, I would think that requirement could be waived), then I would see most foregoing travel until that requirement is no longer there.

The 2 week deal eliminates just about all vacation travel for Americans going abroad.  Almost everyone here who is still working doesn't take trips longer than that.  It's going to limit it to the retired and/or wealthy here and Europeans and others who traditionally take long vacations in the summer.

Packed United flight leaves passengers 'scared,' 'shocked' amid fears of the coronavirus

EXl0qqzX0AE5YOo?format=jpg&name=small

A photo of a crowded flight posted on Twitter by a cardiologist returning from the New York City area may hint at the difficulties of social distancing as air travel picks up again.

Dr. Ethan Weiss tweeted a photo Saturday showing what appears to be a full United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco. Though passengers are wearing masks, he said the crowded cabin runs counter to United's assurances that it would leave middle seats empty in order to promote social distancing to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus...

Thanks for posting and lots of places on the list are relevant to my interests. I wish Conde Nast, Travel + Leisure, or one of the travel sites would publish a weekly update to something like this. It's hard to keep track of the restrictions and updates for different places, but at some point I would like to know which places are legit options for this year.

Agreed.  Though to be honest, I am almost to the point of saying fuck 2020, renting a house in Maine for August and just taking that month off to recharge, and then starting 2021 fresh.

Looks a lot like the hotel I got married at in 2004. Was in a town called Furore.

Stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last week.  The best I could tell, there were 4 of us in the whole place. 2 of those escort (tee-hee) drivers for oversized loads, a lady who was a medical rep for home services, and my sorry ass.

It was almost creepily vacant.  Like every time I went to the elevator, it was still on my floor.  No breakfast or food service, expectedly so. Manager said with the broad vacancies, it made rotating the use of rooms  very easy.

I don't anticipate a large number of Americans wanting to travel  by air any time soon, anyway. Neither do the airlines.

As much as I’d love to take a trip right now, any plans we have for the summer will be within Texas and drivable. I’m sure we’ll make a few trips to the beach this year and probably to the family lake house. That may be about it.

Same here, we'll likely head down to Port A or even PINS sometime in the summer.  Already spending a lot of time at the lake, so that's probably our summer.  And if college football DOESN'T end up happening, then we'll hit the coast on TX-OU weekend instead of going to Dallas like we normally do.  That's an awesome time to be on the beach.

Honestly, it looks like domestic beach and lake trips are about what's going to be available to us for some time.  I mean, that's kinda okay.  We already had one planned, so that will work.  But still.  I truly didn't realize how much we think of travel as part of our everyday lives, and to see it go away fucks with our heads.  Yes, spoiled first world problems, I get it.

We were going to be there the last week of May and beginning of June.

On the empty hotel front.  Back around the time the quarantine started we were in middle of some remodeling and needed to be out of the house for a few days.  We ended up renting 3 rooms so we could spread out a little for work and school purposes and it turns out we were the only guests in the almost 200 room resort hotel.  Unfortunately, no food other than prepackaged grab and go stuff.  The staff was very attentive ( and bored).  They would actually push the elevator call and the floor buttons for us.   I have  7 year old who is used to the "be quiet, don't run, etc." in hotel hallways.  By the end of our time there we were playing hide and go seek and tag in the hallways.  Pretty surreal experience.

We considered a road trip to Big Bend in mid to late June but it looks like it's starting to heat up (100 degree highs)  out there by then.  Anyone been out there at that time of year.  Thoughts?

Yep, last time we did Big Bend was late June.  The heat isn't that bad during the day if you don't push it too hard (we pushed it way too hard one day and had to take it much easier on day two).  But of course the real issue is you gotta pack even leaner than usual so you can fit all your water.  Half the dipshits in our group didn't know what the fuck they were doing so they allocated about a gallon each per day, before cooking/cleaning.  So me and two other guys had to pack where more in than we should have had to.  Moral of the story---calculate how much water you'll need based on weight if you're back-country camping, then bring 50% more than that.  But it's a gorgeous time to be out there.  Skies are clearer than most other times.

Hawaii is booking up for the summer.

We rebooked our Spring Break Maui trip for mid July.  All ocean front rooms already booked through September.

14 day quarantine supposed to end at the end of the month.  I don't see them extending, they need the tourism dollars.

FWIW, Wife just got back from a flight and took this pic. Lucky for us we all went as Breaking Bad characters last Halloween.

I love Europe, it's definitely my favorite travel destination.  But if I have to wait a while, so be it.  We had plans to go for Eurocup this June, but ended up canceling for other reasons, even before the Coronas hit.

They've since postponed the Eurocup until next summer, so maybe I'll be able to do that trip after all.

I have the sads this morning.

The big annual Memorial Day weekend crawfish boil and washers tournament that we co-host along with several other friends down on the Bolivar Peninsula had to be cancelled for the first time since it was started originally by one of the other host's parents back in the 80's.  I had an uninterrupted streak of attendance dating back to the late 90's.

Will be my first Memorial Day doing something different than partying at Crystal Beach in over 20 years.

New Orleans, Ohio (family visit, mother-in-law 'celebrating' 90th bday :(), and Tahiti (bucket list trip) are all off the table this year.

headed to Port A next week for a full week, just me and the husband, he can still work. pool is closed right now, it might open while we're there if Abbott's 'Phase 2' proceeds, but i really don't care that much, i prefer the beach. really hoping things have settled down down there, but we are planning to bring everything to limit local exposure. just put me on the beach in a chair with a drink. will also probably book a similar trip in the fall which is when we normally go.

only other thing we were going to try and work out was road trip visiting friends in CO in the summer...but that appears off the table now as well...

"New normal" is going to look the same as the old normal, it's just going to take a while to get there.

don't be a wuss, be a patriot like the people several blocks over down our street and just throw a 20-30 person bash with full bar out in their yard yesterday.  wife and kiddo were out riding their bikes and saw that.  She could not believe it.

But that sucks.  i'm hoping 4th of July is still in the mix for parties etc...
