So question, how do you use the 13F of a hedge fund to figure out their short position?

13F is public.  should be on SEC\EDGAR.  But it's a quarterly filing so by the time you see it, it's too late.

This. You can google a hedge fund's 13f and look at what they have. But there is a huge delay. For example, Melvin's 13F was filed in November and covered their holdings as of 09/20/2020. A lot can change in that period of time.

I know that.  But there has to be a way to infer what the positions are, yes?

It tells you exactly how many shares they own, how much the position has changed since the last reporting, as well as call and put volume. What it doesn't show, however, is shares shorted.

This is kind of my point.  The 13F has holdings (admittedly, I am not seeing long or short designations either), but that is stale data. So how do you figure out who is holding what?

basically just that if one were to include the synthetic long shares (which are created as a consequence of a short position) as part of the total number of "tradable shares" in calculating the total percentage of shorts, that the number of shorts is only 55% of total instead of the 122% that has been floating around as part of the story.

whoever created that though might have some more success with their marketing ploy here if they took the time to do a little bit of editing - and at least tried to spell "difference" and "academy" correctly.

Question for the traders here. I’ve historically held the view that it’s really difficult for individuals to do technical trading (maybe with fundamental mixed in). As a result I never considered learning technical trading and trying to make decent money trading.

For a number of reasons I don’t want to get into, I’ve started thinking about doing it. What are the thoughts from folks on here? I do not work currently and not planning to for awhile. Can you make money trading?

Gracias, so basically another way to show how ridiculously shorted gme is. 50% would equal basically a 100% short rate in the way its being thrown around... Is that roughly right?

Also the dudes name is freaking IHOR I'm assuming English isn't number 1

Give TD Ameritrade a try. They'll give you a paper account for free for 30 days.

I'm clearly doing the stonk thing wrong, as @Harrison Stafford sent me down a wormhole with AMYZF. I know it's purely speculative, but anyone know if it's a stronger play than ABML (ABTC)? AMYZF has a patented process, ABML is claiming a proprietary process and has some former Tesla guys on board. Just trying to figure out which one is more legit.

Both AMYZF and ABML are pre-revenue, but ABML just holds rights to property that they think has lithium worth mining....doesn't show them doing any mining.  AMYZF recycles lithium battery cathodes using a patented process for which they're building the pilot plant.  AMYZF also has another project for manganese using a similar process.  Supposedly, Tesla has put the cyber truck on hold due to a lack of battery metals and all the other auto manufacturers are just getting started.  Demand much?  AMYZF is at .70 and ABML is at 3.00.  If the move by ABML is anything to go by, AMYZF should be moving up as well.  I think AMYZF is the stronger play, but a lot of people own both stocks.

Picked up 1,000 shares of ALPP at 3.54. Already gruntled.

Man, I was going to jump in on a few shares right before close and see if I could ride a rocket ship tomorrow but my dickhead client** called me and wanted a last minute zoom meeting so I was unable to buy. Maybe I'll place a reasonable limit order for open.

*** Not actually a dickhead, great guy, friend and my biggest and best client. Still though he's harshing my stonk vibe with his actual paying work. Fucker.

Can someone explain the diamond hands thing? Pretty easy to figure out the meaning from context but where did it come from?
It's from r/wallstreetbets it means hold forever(until the absolute peak) .... they are only after playing the longshots

It's a casino is a popular saying there...they were taking the house then the house changed the rules

Wall Street hedge funds running to the exchanges to halt trading to prevent losses is another example of why the game has always been rigged in favor of the elites.

When you lose it's okay, but when they lose the game is turned off.

So, would you say the Game is Stopped?

After todays open surge and subsequent price beat down on gme with buying restrictions....

My assumption is that it will continue to rally afterhours like yesterday. Then maybe do the same open surge followed by systematic beat down? It dropped $180 in one hour this morning.

These hedge funds are not going to get to the point of these short options coming due without a kicking screaming fuckery fight right? The man will try and get his however they can.

So..... what is the downside to selling tonight/tomorrow morning IF that repeats, then be ready to buy back in full force anticipating another manufactured dip.

Just for example. I've got 8 @ 235

If it hits 350 i have a sell order. not really likely but I also have faith in the internets overnight fuck you energy over this shit with robinhood. Along with the powers that be beating the shit back down if it raises up again.

Buy again at 125-200 assuming it repeats.

Assuming that's what happens, what's the negative? Obviously there's 2 ways that it goes tits up (wasted opp selling early or it tanks)

Is it just recycled gains used to further fuck them up? Pocket some cash and reposition to further cash once the squeeze really starts?

Most of this is cloud high level thoughts based on twitter/reddit/here so yeah what could go wrong. fuckem

All of this so far has been price competition (up and down) before the real fun begins as the shorts become due.... right?

Hello Bitcoin.

Yep. They’re censoring your speech and now your money.

What else do the people in authority have to do to show you how little they think of you?

Buying and holding some bitcoin is itself an act of protest. It’s one that will almost certainly bank you some coin as well.

This game is being strung out until the shorts are due right. it's still shorted over 100%. If we know that they will beat the price down and the retail are going to keep buying after  because the short amount is valuable and fuck them up pay your stupid ass risky position, it's a yoyo. Might as well play it? I don't have much else to do tomorrow haha

The voice of outrage needs to be someone other than Dave Portnoy. The guy has zero knowledge of the workings of Wall Street. He gets his trading ideas from his legion of bros commenting on his live Twitter feed. It’s amazing that he’s constantly quoted on CNBC and other financial media as if he’s some expert. I’m not saying the gist of what he’s saying is wrong but he has no credibility.

RH and other brokers saying they'll allow trading tomorrow (now that they let their hedge fund buddies cover their positions at more reasonable prices). It's about to touch 300 AH and I am right back in it. Tomorrow is gonna be absolutely wild. No doubt the institutional guys will be on the long side now as well. I expect them to ride it up then drive it right back down and profit on both sides. Will have to be careful to not get caught holding the bag tomorrow.

I disagree. You don’t need to know the ins and outs of how stock transactions clear to know what happened was fucked up. He’s very social media savvy and has a big presence.

The person you’re looking for with more “credibility” is probably Chamath. He did an interview yesterday and the CNBC anchor was almost crying. “Will someone think of the hedge funds?!”

His social media impact is good for the purpose of continuing to spread awareness on twitter and among the pleebs. It's explained simply with appropriate outrage.

However CNBC is not his target audience. More known "in the game" people should be on CNBC. Mark Cuban needs to go on there and raise hell. Chamath needs to be on every other hour making them look silly.

Eager to see what politicians speak out against this, as you know their pockets are lined full of hedge money. Pick your side publicly bitches.

I see what you’re saying and mostly agree.

But the guy has incredible reach and power in the new social dynamics

i don’t follow barstool sports network and I’m pretty sure this guy pumps/shills, but if he’s fighting in “our” side then it’s a useful asset.

he was bantering back and forth with SaC on twitter, which nobody else can get that kind of engagement.

maybe it’s a net negative if he represents the wrong message but for now don’t see a problem

that's a great idea until the platforms halt buy orders, but not sell orders. you could get caught out. that's exactly what happened today and it was by fucking design. criminal behavior in broad daylight. the platforms shielded the hedge funds from the retail buyers, and they got to artificially lower the price so they could load up and mitigate their losses. i'm a stock market idiot, but even i could see what was happening.

fyi, cnbc is going to have the ceo of robinhood on here in a bit. will be interesting to see his bullshit dissembling.
