MNF died when they moved it to ESPN. They deserve the shitty personalities for being so fucking dumb.

This ..... and the what was noted above about flex scheduling.

Really  they should do what worked back in the day and just load the Monday nights up with teams that draw numbers.  Even when the Cowboys were treading water in the later years of the Landry era and going into the Johnson era, they still gave MNF the ratings.

The booth will smell of chicken parm sandwiches.

you say that like it's a bad thing.

problem ain't the announcers, although joe and booger certainly weren't helping anything. the problem is that no one wants to watch the Lions and the Bucs.

They need to find another Frank Gifford in the Michaels/Dierdorf era. Find and ex-player who has a great play by play voice but also has great insight into the game. Easier said than done but I believe it will help bring MNF back to prominence.

And teams hate playing on Monday night. MNF will never be what it used to be, not as long as teams have a say. The only way it comes back with marquee matchups is when espn throws crazier than crazy money at them.

Fuck that. ESPN's problem is they're too chicken shit to put a name that no one has heard before in a prominent position, so we end up with dipshits like Witten and Booger.

Peyton would probably be great because of his intelligence and self-deprecating humor. But, absent of him, go hire someone who has called broadcasting their profession for most of their lives, and might actually be good at it.

Dave South for the win!

They need an ex-player or coach smarter than Booger that points out the non-obvious things, or unlike Booger, doesn’t completely make things up that even a novice fan would question.

Maybe Manning could fill that role paired with a strong play by play person.

New concept they can pay me for if worked:

Guest color person every week! Or maybe two, an ex-player from each of the teams playing?

Ravens-Steelers 2020 Week 16 -

Kordell Stewart: “I really respect what Lamar Jackson is doing, speaking of course as the original ‘Slash’. I don’t know how a defense can stop him for 60 minutes.”

Ray Lewis: ”You just answered your own questions. I’d slash the shit out of him!”

As long as MNF keeps getting Redskins vs Bengals level matchups then it doesn’t matter who they put in the booth.  If Booger was in the Sunday Night booth with  premiere games their ratings probably wouldn’t change much... people would bitch, but they’re still going to watch Chiefs vs Patriots regardless of the announce team

Bring back the greatest football commentator of all time, Dennis Miller

I thought Tony Kornheiser was terrific in the booth. Too bad he had a paralyzing fear of flying and didn't want to Madden bus his way around the country.

The real answer, and I'd use it every time, is to turn the mouthpiece, empty headed, talking motherfuckers off and just have ambient stadium noise.  Make it like the SAP button or whatever.

The game tells the story, not the fucking windbags.

Yeah, but you have to admit that sometimes it's fun to hear an impartial human narrator recap the complete ineptitude of Baker Mayfield.

Sounds like Levy with Orlovsky &/or Riddick if this season happens.

Quote

ESPN’s dreams of signing Tony Romo or Peyton Manning for the “Monday Night Football” broadcast booth fizzled.

Now, the network is reportedly leaning toward an in-house crew to call its NFL showcase while keeping its eyes on another star quarterback for the future. According to the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand, Steve Levy, Louis Riddick and Dan Orlovsky are the top candidates for the job.

The network has not settled on the trio, nor decided on whether it would go with a three-man booth or a two-man booth with Levy at play-by-play and Riddick and/or Orlovsky at color commentary, according to the report. “Monday Night Football” has toggled between two- and three-man booths since its 1970 debut.

Drew Brees to eventually take over?

Meanwhile, the network continues to pursue Drew Brees even after the New Orleans Saints quarterback signed a two-year, $50 million deal to continue playing football. Brees would provide the star power the network is desperately seeking after Romo agreed to stay with CBS for a record 10-year, $180 million deal and Manning reportedly declined to join the broadcast.

Reported Brees offer not in Romo’s neighborhood

ESPN is offering Brees around $6.5 million per year to join the broadcast after his playing career is done, according to the report. That salary would line up roughly with what ESPN paid Jon Gruden before he returned to the NFL sidelines with the now-Las Vegas Raiders. The network was reportedly prepared to offer Romo $14 million annually before CBS locked up his services.

Brees, 41, will play at least one more season of football, assuming next season goes on as planned amid the COVID-19 pandemic. ESPN would be pursuing him for the 2021 season or beyond.

What about Booger?

Meanwhile, the network has made no official statement on the status of Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland, who helmed the “Monday Night Football” booth last season. McFarland has been a steady target of fan and media criticism for his work in the booth.

ESPN hasn’t ruled out using its top college football team of Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit for the broadcast, according to the report. But Levy, Riddick and/or Orlovsky are reportedly the preferred candidates.

Levy is an ESPN mainstay, having worked at the network since 1993 in various roles, including MLB and NHL play-by-play and as a “SportsCenter” anchor.

Riddick played six seasons as a safety in the NFL and worked as an NFL scout and executive from 2001-13 before joining ESPN as an analyst. Orlovsky played eight seasons as an NFL quarterback, primarily as a backup. He joined ESPN as an analyst in 2017.

Orlovsky is a perfect example of ESPN's M.O. these last few years. They've parted ways with guys like Cowherd, and fast-tracked hack blowhard ex-players like Orlovsky and Ryan Clark in an effort to save money. I guess their thinking is the average dipshit sports fan grunts approval at his TV when he sees an ex-player spewing a hot take. Maybe they're right.

Scratch Drew from their list.

Drew Brees appears to have his second career lined up.

The New Orleans Saints quarterback has agreed to join NBC Sports as a football analyst when he is done playing, the New York Post reported Friday.

Brees, 41, has not announced when he plans to retire. He plans to play the 2020 season after signing a two-year, $50 million contract extension with the Saints last month.

An NBC spokesman would not confirm an agreement with Brees when contacted by ESPN.

"Like all NFL fans, we look forward to watching Drew continue his Hall of Fame career this fall, and we're confident his post-playing career will be just as successful," the spokesman said.

Drew Brees has lined up a post-playing career as an NBC analyst, according to the New York Post. Joe Faraoni/ESPN Images
Coach Sean Payton suggested recently on ESPN's Get Up that this would be Brees' "final season." But the coach later called himself a "big dummy" for his word choice, saying he doesn't know when Brees plans to retire.

According to the New York Post, Brees will be groomed as a potential replacement for Cris Collinsworth on NBC's "Sunday Night Football." Brees is expected to start as a game analyst for Notre Dame football games and as a studio analyst for "Football Night in America."

Brees is the NFL career leader in passing yards (77,416) and touchdown passes (547). He has repeatedly said that he believes he could play at a high level through age 45 -- but only if he wants to keep playing that long. He has been taking that decision "year by year" for the past several years.
