Because I had mumps antibodies in my blood doc said it wasn’t mumps.  Meaning I had already had the mumps or had the vaccine hence the antibodies.  Anyway, just thought it was weird all around especially given what’s going on these days.

Sounds like something someone with the mumps would say.

How's your day going?

I'm sitting in the ER parking lot, had to drop my dad off but no visitors allowed in the building.

He's not there for COVID, but rather for an oozing incision from surgery on 3/9, and they went back in again on Friday 2/27. Would is still oozing, so the surgeon says have it looked at, maybe a wound vac. Do they are treating him, and I'm sitting in a car (surfing surly, Reddit and trying to find tomorrow's stonks) it feels like I'll be here for hours, although it's been just under an hour so far.

I'm more worried about him getting exposed to COVID at the hospital, and that he could take it back with him to the Sr living center. Crazy fucking world we live in today.

Some people is an understatement. There are millions that have/had it and never got a test.

I am personally inclined to agree with you on that but had I said that originally there would have been criticism of that part and my main point - that some population of people getting rejected from testing right now still have it - would have been ignored.

What’s the estimated timeline for antibody test for corona?

Frankly, I think it's a ways away, at least on a wide scale.

In the past this wouldn't have mattered as much because we wouldn't have shut down the world over a new virus. A lot more people would have died and the virus would have burned through the population a lot faster, but the flip side is that people would have just adapted and society would have just moved on despite the deaths and illnesses. Then a few years later the antibody test comes out - along with a vaccine - and our public health incrementally would have improved in the long run at about the same rate it's eventually going to learn and improve from this.

The difference being now, instead of adapting to risk and accepting risk and getting on with life at the expense of a large death toll, our society tries to minimize risk and contain it, so the "need" for antibody medicine seems a lot more acute since we are all sitting around with our thumbs in or asses waiting to be told its safe to go outside.

Well, looks like I now have a story.

I started feeling achy 2 days ago. Yesterday my ear really started hurting and developed a low fever that eventually leveled off at 102.8ish.

no cough or sore throat. Can still smell. Just really achy and chills with ear pressure and fever.  I figured I have a pollen induced ear infection and called  UTMB at around 11:15 this morning expecting to get a prescription for antibiotics (I live in Galveston).  The doctor asked me all the standard questions (travel, contact, etc.) all of which I answered no.
To my surprise they wanted me to come in right away away to get tested for covid 19. Their first opening was at 1145 so I got in the truck and drove on over.

I was the only patient there and 6th of the day out of 9 scheduled.  Overall very organized and reassuring.  Everyone looked to be on their A game.   Masks, gloves, the whole nine yards.

First they had me take the flu test, which actually happened to be the longest part of the experience since it took 15 mins for the machine to warm up (they apologized for it taking so long). negative.

Then the dreaded covid19 swab appeared. Honestly, it wasn’t all that bad.  The “stick” portion of the swab is flexible so it doesn’t hurt.   The nurse then escorted me across the hallway to the doctor who proceeded to check my ears.

Never in my wildest dream did I think I would ever be be so ecstatic to hear that I have an ear infection. Lol

I should have the covid test results back in 2-3 days. Though they mentioned that since they are doing the full test in house they are actually running ahead of schedule and I might get the results back in a day.

The doctor doubts I’m positive, but I’m happy they recommended testing The piece of mind will be nice.

The test tech commented that the mainland is slammed. Long lines in Houston and the clear lake region, So I recommend any Houston horns needing a test call UTMB.

Basically our med school is currently kicking ass in this time of crisis and we should all be proud.

I had double pneumonia when I was young, early twenties. It was at the bottom of my lungs and they missed it until the took a second chest X-Ray. It almost killed me and I was very healthy non smoker, no other conditions. I'm no doctor, but please monitor yourself very closely. I was <100 pounds when I was released and it took two months before I could handle stairs.

It messed up my lungs for a long time and I always get the flu shot now that they have one.

good lord I am sorry to hear that. yikes. Glad you are with us.

The ABs seem to really help me. I mean within like 4 hours I felt better. Its been 24 hours and I am now back to the previous levels of breathing, say 85 to 90%. can lay down again and feel ok. So that is good news. Hope they + the regular med regiment will keep me on the up and up

So Dad was admitted into the hospital for IV antibiotics, some further testing and likely another surgical procedure tomorrow to examine the incision to determine why is continues to leak/weep/ooze. I'm starting to worry that the senior assisted living center that he lives in might not let him back in when he is released from the hospital.
What a clusterfuck that will be trying to move from one quarantined facility to another.

On the plus side, I did manage to stop and pick up a couple of pizzas to go on my way home, so that was a bonus for my isolate at-home crowd; though Mrs. Fairway insisted that my clothes be washed, and that I had to take a shower upon reentry to my home. She understood that I had to take my Dad to the hospital, but I got the stink-eye when I returned (then again I'm fairly used to that)

Last of my family finally getting through it.   My two boys developed a nasty case of pink eye on top of the sore throat and cough.  It's weird because the stuff comes back out of nowhere. Kinda like a KU football game or Shaka Smart after another bad season.

Any chance those are just side effects from the voodoo?

Our good friends down the street have it. Initially their daughter (2 year old) spiked a 103 fever with cough, they ignored it. She mostly got over it then the wife had a bad cough and self diagnosed as bronchitis, then a small fever and now her husband has a small fever with cough. Finally admitting that they have it.

We saw them 16 days ago for four hours

Is there a NSAA thread for what you stuck in your ear?

Funny, I hit you with a like.  Not really, but I ran short of the amount needed.  The boys had to rough it with only the protease inhibitor.  Be careful, if you did buy the viral inhibitors and others know you have it, it will be gone fast.

I've been completely fever-free since Friday. I was starting to think I don't have it because of how mild it was (knock on wood re: resurgence).

TIL CDC guidelines for ending self quarantine (in the absence of two retests within 24 hours, which I don't think I'd get) are three days without a fever/respiratory symptoms and seven days since symptoms appeared. That's... Tomorrow.

I'm now thinking I have it because being considered safe to go in public before I even get the rest result would be so on brand for this whole thing. Obviously I will be quarantining until at least the result and subsequent conversation with the DR, but still think that's pretty funny.

So wife has been feeling a little off and came down with slight fever (100.9) and is freaking out. She’s Wondering if we need to sleep in different rooms. It seems like if it’s Covid, I’m already screwed since we’ve been in close  contact.

Great that means I’ve probably got it as well...

Seriously, my best friends daughter graduated from Seton Hall last year where she played softball. She went back a few weeks ago to visit former teammates and came back, got sick and tested positive. Now my friend and his wife are both quarantined at home.

This is her breakdown verbatim of her experience.

Came back the 14th and started getting congested on Thursday the 19th (thought it was allergies)

Friday: woke up with a headache and thought it was just a sinus headache

Saturday: still felt like I had just sinus issues, went for a run, then my cough started (I normally don’t cough a lot so this was odd)

Sunday: all of those symptoms plus fatigue (still didn’t think anything of it)

Monday: woke up and my body was aching. It felt like I just pitched a game lol. I tried to do a workout on Monday but had to stop halfway through bc I was so gd tired.

Tuesday (prob my worst day): congestion, headache, chills, body aches, extreme fatigue and shortness of breath. I couldn’t talk in full sentences without getting tired

Wednesday: all of the symptoms but not as bad

Today: mostly headache and runny nose and still some occasional body aches and fatigue.

So on Saturday (Run) and Monday (Workout) she was probably out public shedding virus.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

I still think there's a 50% my family had it late Feb. Entire family was sick,  fevers, coughing, etc.. Kids and wife got over it in a little over a week. I had serious trouble breathing for a couple weeks and would wake up in the middle of the night sweating profusely. I also lost my sense of taste, and smell was definitely off. Congestion ended up moving to my lungs over the last week before finally clearing up. All told I was sick for almost a month. Negative flu and strep.

Hopefully antibody tests are rolled out sometime soon.

Just received my test results back. It’s a negative!  Yay.
One day turn around with testing. Once again, I am very impressed with UTMB.  Highly recommend anyone in the general area who thinks they might have it call them first and get seen on the island.

In the new normal I wish I lived in Galveston.

In addition to classic pinkeye, there was a common reddish hue to the eyelids of many of those who caught C-19 at that assisted living facility in Washington State.

For what it's worth, a nurse at that facility observed that red eyes were a proxy for a serious case. https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/23/health/coronavirus-nurses-inside-washington-care-home/index.html

My grandson, who lives with us here in Austin, started showing a distinct pinkish hue on his eyelids in early February.  Doctors "diagnosed" it as allergic eczema and put him on steroid cream.

About a week later, he was the first of all 6 people living in our house to get sick with a fever and dry cough.  It tore through the house in about a week, and took some of us nearly a month to shake the cough.  Nobody developed significant respiratory issues, though.  I had very low fever, others saw it spike to 102 F or so.

I'm not convinced it was CV19, but some things do give one pause.  For starters, I got the flu vaccine, so if it was flu, it was either one not covered or the vaccine didn't work, both of which are entirely possible.  More likely it was the adenovirus referred to multiple times in this thread.

I hope to get an antibody test if it becomes available.  I'm curious.

Like most, if not all of you, every little thing makes me wonder if I have it.

Case in point: a slightly runny nose for the past few days.  Very minor, and it may run for an hour or so, then go away.  I don't have seasonal allergies, or maybe this was the year for them to start. I just don't know.

To me, this is not only fucking over the world, but each of us individually, as we all have ignored these minor things our entire lives.  And now, we stress and think nonstop about them when they happen to us or our loved ones, because we just don't know.

Yeah, the uncertainty of it all is upending, especially because (as it's been pointed out on here before) humans are really fucking bad at risk assessment in the first place, even with all of the pertinent facts at hand.

FWIW, runny nose is not considered a COVID symptom, to my knowledge. That's actually an example I've seen highlighted in the "Actually, you probably don't have it" column. But you're right, on an individual level...Who knows?

My eye has been aggravated since Saturday.  Not really to the point of pink eye, but a little discharge. I attribute it to the inch of pollen on the cars and driveway.  But who knows?  Allergies don’t generally bother me like they do others in the house.

My wife ordered face masks from someplace because she heard/read that’s the next thing coming - masks & gloves required to go out in public.
