THEY BETTER PLAY A SHIT TON OF FALL GAMES THIS FALL AGAINST REAL TEAMS,

MAKE IT FUCKING HAPPEN.

I like the implication that the coronavirus was God's judgement for playing an aggy football level OOC schedule. Make cool games happen.

Currently the big 12 suspended sports until 3/29. The NCAA cancelled postseason. The regular season can resume if the conferences want to.

Brian Davis says Texas Athletics facilities are closing and student athletes are being released to go home.  They aren't going to be practicing as if the season will pick up again. It could, but seems unlikely at this point.

Wonder how they will handle the 11.7 next season with incoming freshman / 35 man roster

Potentially a temporary relaxation of the roster limit by not counting either incoming freshmen who RS or super seniors.

Great time to discuss increasing the 11.7 bullshit.

More on that...

NCAA planning to grant additional year to some, discussing more https://247sports.com/Article/Coronavirus-NCAA-planning-to-grant-additional-year-of-eligibility-to-some-discussing-more-144994142/

"The NCAA’s Council Coordination Committee has agreed to grant relief for the use of a season of competition for student-athletes who have participated in spring sports," Goodman tweeted. "Committee will also discuss issues for winter sport student-athletes."

Goodman simplified his report in a quick follow up.

"Players in spring sports get another year of eligibility," he wrote. "NCAA looking into what to do with those who played winter sports."

The NCAA released a statement regarding the decision:

"The NCAA Board of Governors encourages conferences and schools to make decisions and take action in the best interest of student-athletes and their communities. In addition, the NCAA Board of Governors directs Divisions I, II and III to consider necessary adjustments to or waivers of rules where appropriate."

The Board of Governors for each division must pass the changes for them to be implemented.

While scholarships were the biggest obstacle (in terms of limits and incoming athletes), the NCAA allowed a path for athletes to regain a year of lost eligibility due to the coronavirus.

247Sports Chris Hummer wrote about the possibilities and questions the NCAA faces when granting extra eligibility due to the coronavirus.

"Roster size restrictions are a thing in college athletics," he wrote. "Division I baseball teams can only carry 35 players during the regular season. There are only 11.7 scholarships to go around among that group. Coaches allot those scholarships and roster spots based on impending graduations. But what happens if the seniors are granted an extra year of eligibility?

"That would create a pileup effect when it came to managing numbers. Scholarships would be restricted and difficult roster decisions would have to made. In many cases, high school athletes have already signed. What do you do when the numbers don't add up? The NCAA would need to find an elegant solution, which would likely mean temporarily expanding roster sizes."

The waiver will present challenges,  particularly with the uncertainity of the MLB Draft (likely only 5 - 10 rounds) and reduced bonuses.   Texas' 2020 class (ranked #1) has 14 and the 2021 class has 6 thus far (Perfect Game).

Correct me,  but I believe the draft eligible are Elder, Ellis, Diaz, Todd, Petrinsky, Fields, Williams, Stehly, Stevens, Zubia (10).  Petrinsky, Todd, Ellis and Diaz are Seniors eligible to return.  Only Elder probably has a chance of being drafted in the limited draft.  Pierce has a difficult decision in managing the roster.  Not necessarily in numbers this year,  but in playing time.  Who will be asked to leave ?   Hopefully,  he will find teams for those asked to leave.

I suppose the positive is that the talent should increase,  but great empathy for the draft eligible and those that may be cut.

Ohio State's Greg Beals said Tuesday he isn't worried about 2021, when the 35-man roster limit will be relaxed to accommodate seniors choosing to return for another season.

The problem comes in 2022, when the limit is back in force. Beals has 11 freshmen coming in this fall, and they will join nine players who will be reclassified as freshmen because the 2021 season ended abruptly March 12.

“The greater effect might be two or three years from now,” LSU's Paul Mainieri said. "Most schools in the SEC have their 2021 recruiting classes for high school players already done. So now you're bunching a lot of kids together, and we'll see how it plays out.

“As far as this year, the impact is minimal. What is of greater impact is what Major League Baseball does with their draft.”

The renewal date for scholarships is July 1, and coaches might not know which players are staying or going by then. If there are five or 10 rounds instead of the usual 40, juniors and seniors who aren't projected to go in the early rounds would be apt to return to school. The more rounds there are, the more likely there'll be fewer junior and seniors returning. The fall semester could be drawing close before the numbers are known.

“You've got freshmen that are coming in that were counting on those seniors and juniors leaving or going to the draft,” Mississippi athletic director Keith Carter said, "so what does that look like for the young players and does that change the dynamic with them?”

Junior colleges stand to be the beneficiary of the uncertainty.

Iowa Western Community College coach Marc Rardin said he recently got four calls in one day from advisers for high school seniors looking for a fallback plan if they aren't drafted and the Division I schools they signed with have clogged rosters.

“Some kids who are signed with four-year schools coming out of high school are a little apprehensive about it and want to make sure they get somewhere they can have a chance to develop and play,” Rardin said.

Under the terms of the deal hammered out between MLB and the MLBPA, the 2020 draft will be cut to no fewer than five rounds (MLB can expand it if it so chooses and several scouting departments hold out hope that it could be expanded to 10 rounds). The draft will be held as early as the current June 10 start date and as late as July 20. The dates for both periods are fluid because of the evolving novel coronavirus situation.

The draft’s signing deadline will be Aug. 1 at the latest, though it could move up based on the draft date. The expectation is that MLB will set a draft date roughly one month before the draft takes place to give teams time to prepare. While no details have been formalized, it is expected that the current draft date will be used to set the cutoff date for draft-eligible 21-year-olds even if the draft date itself is pushed back.

For both the 2020 and 2021 drafts, there are provisions for voluntary showcases before the draft (dependent on prevailing conditions around the country) to attempt to help MLB teams see players whose seasons have been cut short by the coronavirus.

Potentially even more important, teams will be limited to spending no more than $20,000 to sign any undrafted player. Previously teams could spend up to $125,000 on any late-round pick

Assuming the draft is five rounds In 2020, if a college junior goes undrafted, he can either sign for a maximum of $20,000 or return to school, knowing his negotiating leverage will be limited the following year as a senior sign.

This got me curious as I didn't remember any perfect games by Texas pitchers.  I went back to the record book and there are two, one by James Street and one by Burt Hooten (in consecutive years).  Both were scheduled 7 inning games.  While looking for that I found out that Jim Ehrler pitched the first no hitter in CWS history on the way to Texas' 2nd title.  Of course it was only 4th CWS (and the first to be held in Omaha).  So of course then I had to go look up how many no hitters thee have been in the CWS.  There have only been two no hitters in CWS history, Ehler's in 1950 and one by Jim Wixon of Okie St. in 1960.

Lengthy article on fan reaction to the cancelled season with quotes from Scott Wilson and Marc Pena.    But will highlight the best fan.   Has to be a Surly member's child  ?   Note the sunglasses on the cap and wrist tape.     🙂

A few weeks ago, Gus Armbruster had planned on celebrating his seventh birthday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

A UT baseball game would have been the perfect setting for a birthday party for Gus, who is one of the Longhorns’ biggest — and at the same time, smallest — fans. One year ago, he turned six while watching Texas lose a 3-0 game to rival Texas Tech.  With New Mexico being the scheduled opponent for this birthday weekend this time, Gus was going to root for a better result alongside family, friends and teammates from his coach-pitch team.

Gus, though, never made it to the ballpark that Sunday. Neither did the Longhorns or Lobos. Three days earlier, the NCAA had canceled its spring championships as fears spread about the coronavirus pandemic. The following day, on March 13, UT’s entire baseball season was canceled.

“As the season got canceled, he was just crushed,” said Gus’ father, Jason. “He didn’t understand it.”

Baseball still consumes the life of Gus, who even wore his cleats on a fishing trip this week. His birthday party was moved to his home, but UT pitcher Kamron Fields stopped by and the family of infielder Lance Ford sent cookies. When outside, he has the playlist of the Longhorns’ walk-up songs to use while practicing baseball. While inside, he has recreated the Longhorns for his “MLB The Show 20” video game. His parents even scheduled an online hitting tutorial with former UT infielder Masen Hibbeler.

“He’s ready for 2021,” Jason Armbruster said.

The morning after each of UT’s canceled games, Gus will ask his parents for the result of the Twitter simulation done by UT fan @LanceJNorth. Not surprisingly, a Texas team that was 14-3 on March 13 hasn’t lost a fake game since its season ended.

Ha, he’s fucking bumming.

That interview was hilarious.

Just looked up J. Brent Cox's mlb career.... freakin' broke a bone in his pitching hand in a bar fight -- what a waste!!

Quote

Wiki

Cox attended the University of Texas. With the Texas Longhorns baseball team, Cox set the record for the most appearances in the College World Series with 13 and in 2005 tied the UT record with Charlie Thames for most saves in a single season with 19.[2]

Cox was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 2nd round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft.[3] Cox had a 6-2 win–loss record and a 1.75 earned run average for the Trenton Thunder of the Class AA Eastern League in 2006.[4] That year, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com wrote, "Some are projecting him as the eventual replacement for all-world closer Mariano Rivera."[5]

In 2006, Cox was named to the Olympic Qualifying Team roster.[6] He pitched in three games for the U.S. national team, allowing one run in 5.2 innings.[7] In 2007, Cox was listed as the eighth best prospect in the New York Yankees organization and owning the best slider in the farm system.[8]

The Yankees invited Cox to spring training in 2007, but rescinded the invitation after he broke a bone in his pitching hand in a bar fight in December 2006. He had elbow surgery and missed the entire 2007 season. After a bad game in June 2009, Cox left the Thunder without permission. He returned to Texas to complete his college degree. Noticing that his arm was beginning to feel better, he returned to professional baseball in 2010.[4] In September 2010, he got into an altercation with Thunder manager Tony Franklin after Franklin removed him from a game.[9] He retired after the season.

2005 CWS Champ game vs Florida will be broadcast on ESPNU,  tonight, 8PM, if you missed the earlier broadcast.

Encourage you to set your DVR for the following game at 11PM, 2008 Fresno St vs Georgia.   One of the greatest stories in CWS history.   Fresno St went from a 4 seed regional team ( (8 seed at CWS) to  national champions.
