Also - fuck Rory. Bring that shit home Xander.

Especially now that China is whipping our ass. Wtf? Step up Murica.

This is gonna happen sooner or later, it’s an increasingly rich country with an authoritarian system and has implemented a central plan to win the most golds by cleaning up in targeted sports. Just be glad that we don’t have to live in that place.

Per capita we all get our clocks cleaned by Nordic/Central European/Caribbean Islands anyway.

Like Russia did since forever but we still won?  Nah China has a huge problem when track and field starts and that’s where we pass them and always will.  It’s doesn’t help that all the small sports are early, they have like 5 different events in things like badminton, table tennis, ect early.

The Soviets won the most golds at 6/9 Summer games where they competed (we weren’t there in 1980 but then again they weren’t there in 1984). So they were better than .500 against us when we both took part. In golds only, not total medal count. Which, incidentally, is like the Chinese, who openly say the only goal is “most golds.”

Almost exactly like the Soviets but with more resources and people, this will happen eventually. I’d even say the Chinese are better at targeting the sports where they will have a comparative advantage against the field.

Still think it’s cool Jess Fox used a condom to fix her broken kayak and still medaled. Love how all the stories are like “not sure where she got the condom.” Uhhh…they’ve been handing them out like glow sticks or molly at a rave…lol. Like 150,000 of them to Olympians or some such shit.

I was thinking more since the 80’s where they haven’t won the total once but you are right on before that.  I wasn’t alive for most of those so I didn’t think of those.

The Olympics needs to be drastically trimmed. Basically, if there is a larger stage out there for an individual or national team sport— you’re out.

Tennis- Out (Grand Slams)

Golf- Out (Majors)

Soccer- Out (World Cup)

Surfing/Skating- Out (So many other tournaments and frankly it’s lame as hell to associate these sports with an organization like the IOC)

Rugby- Borderline. The Six Nations limits the field but it’s also the tournament people give a shit about.

Equestrian— I have no idea what is the biggest dressage event and don’t care. It’s a sport for royals to spend money and pretend they’re good at something. There are lots of kickass horse races out there, which are more of a sport.

Boxing- Stays. I do like that there is an international level that people can aspire to without automatically signing up for long term brain damage. And it’s an original Olympic discipline.

I’m sure there are more. And I love a lot of these sports, it’s just that Wimbledon and the Masters tell me who the best golfers and tennis players are, not the Olympics.

Basically, I like the OG Greek disciplines plus swimming and a few others. Team sports that don’t have a better stage. And leave the gymnasts, I guess.

They absolutely curb stomped the field in medals in Seoul in 1998. Like no country ever has. And then in 1992 the country didn’t exist anymore, a good object lesson in how Olympic medals are a shitty way to gauge national health.

The 1990s and pre 2010 2000s destroyed their sports program. Athletes, coaches, and doping specialists all took their talents to the Capitalists. They are just now getting their mojo back on the doping front.

Baseball for me is borderline (trending to out) just because there’s no larger national team event, like the World Cup. That’s why I’d leave basketball in, too. But hoops is more global.

But yeah, with six entries, whatever. I think it’s just being played in Japan because the host nation likes it as a one-off.

I’m opposed to adding any new sport determined solely by judges.

State sponsored doping programs provide the Russians and Chinese with a huge advantage.  If you hear any suspicion that a Chinese or Russian athlete is doping, they are.

If there was a movement to drop team sports and just have all athletes compete as “you”, I would be here for that. Ban all flags and national insignia, just names of people. IOC would just sanction various official regional events and certify results, the top 16 or however many times or wins in regionally sanctioned championships (for boxing/wrestling/etc) in an Olympic qualifying season advance.  That would be cool.

We would see lot less interest in rigging shit as some sort of bizarre authoritarian propaganda scheme.

Is Novak losing the biggest upset in the Olympics?
Magic 8 ball says - definitely

Novak is #2

Biles is #1

Novak was also competing in mixed doubles, he's 34, the heat & especially humidity have always been something that he's struggled with.

Naomi is probably in the Top 5, but I haven't been paying attention to the swimming very much, so I don't know if there were any "sure things".

But Biles was definitely #1 and Novak was definitely #2. #3 was/will be a long way away from those two.

The vitriol aimed at her seems to be subsiding based on a poll I've just conducted in my head.  But it still makes me think of this:

America (after mass shooting):  "We need to have a national conversation about mental health!  Let's not marginalize it, let's fix it!"

Simone Biles (beloved American with the power to bring attention to the issue):  "I would like to bring attention to mental health and wellness."

America:  "Shut up and vault, quitter!"

Mixed gender triathlon relay is starting on USA.  I'm not sure how this works but the women are going first.

So third then, but in the first heat, with silver on/in the line?

I've watched about 5 minutes of the Olympics and minute 6 happened to drop on women's rugby.  Suffice to say didn't make it to the end of the 6th minute.  What the hell is going on with the people now deciding what sports should be in the Olympics?

Thank god I got over to the beach volleyball to see the ass.

I bet Vic Mackey can barely keep his pants on watching that women's rugby

I gagree with a lot of this....I mean shit more fucking golf and tennis that shit is always on

I doubt soccer would go away and as an American we are not beat down with it as much and other places love it so I can see it

one thing that really sucks is this emphasis on having the females do the same new events as the males.....the BMX freestyle women would be thrashed by any decent 15yo weed smoking male.......shit some of them I could have done 90% of their tricks which consisted of jumping on the ramp.....a back flip was like woooooaaa.....meanwhile the guys are doing all kind of crazy shit the women look mostly like a kid at the park with a new bike

Most of the criticism of her has been from men. Fuck them.
