Your top 10 albums, no order

Goredho

Recommended Posts

No order:

1. The Beatles--White Album

2. The Beatles-Abbey Road

3. The Beatles-Revolver

4. The Beatles-Sgt. Pepper

5. The Beatles-Rubber Soul

6. Bruce Springsteen-Born to Run

7. Led Zeppelin-IV

8. Fleetwood Mac-Rumours

9. Pink Floyd-Dark Side

10. Prince-Dirty Mind

This was hard.  Tough to leave off at least two of Elton John's albums (among my favorites: YBR, Honky Chateaux, Mad Man Across the Water), Springsteen's DOTEOT and Greetings, and the Stones' Sticky Fingers.

No particular order, but Making Movies is always near the top.

Dire Strait: Making Movies
Elton John:  Capt. Fantastic
Jayhawks:  Rainy Day Music
REM: Murmur
Toad The Wet Sprocket:  Pale
Bruce Robison:  Country Sunshine (can't find it anymore but it is stunning.  His best songwriting is on this album)
James McMurtry:  It Had To Happen (close race between Where'd You Hide/Complicated Game)
Willie: Stardust (in a close race with Stranger)
Los Lobos: Will The Wolf Survive
Beatles:  Abbey Road

Saw them at The Bronco Bowl Feb. 1990. (RIP Pat and The Bronco Bowl)
Opening band was Camper Van Beethoven, the immensely talented David Lowery’s band. They broke up two months later and Lowery formed Cracker.

What a great show it was.

Cracker with Johnny Hickman on guitar and Davey Faragher on bass was a GREAT rock show.
Also, second the Smithereens on a solid live show.  Saw them outdoors and they blew me away.

Not to derail this, but I'm going to completely fucking derail this:

If you had to take one band's entire discography to the desert island, who you going with?

I'd probably take the Stones.  They cover almost every genre of music I enjoy, and do it all insanely well.  Plus, the volume of great songs is just incredible.  Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and The Black Crowes would be in the conversation, but the Stones get the nod.

Either Petty or REM (until Bill Berry left.  I got now use for any of their stuff without ).

Influences? dogbreath already touched on this but my musical influences were diverse and barely related to any albums. One of my earliest memories was playing the 45 of The Bare Necessities from Disney's The Jungle Book over and over again on our little toy record player. We had the Peter and the Wolf album and that probably influenced me while I wasn't aware it was happening. My parents weren't in to music that much and their album collection was limited. They had the West Side Story soundtrack, I remember liking that. They also had an 8-track of Herb Alpert's greatest hits. Those both hold up.

My dad divorced my mom when I was 7 and married a young tramp from work. She gave me her collection of 45's. I discovered the Beatles in there, mentioned that I liked them to an aunt who then gave me her copy of Beatles '65, and off I went. I was also influenced by the music I heard on TV, at church, and at the county fair.

So, top 10 albums. Damn our decimal numbering system. It always has to be top 10. I can come up with a solid 8. After that there's too much competition for the next two spots. So here ya go:

Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's
Pink Floyd - Dark Side
Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage
Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah
King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
Steely Dan - Aja
Spirit - 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

Like I said, it's too hard to pick 9 & 10, but just for jimmyjazz I'm going with these:

Bob Weir - Heaven Help the Fool
Jerry Garcia Band - Cats Under the Stars

The Clash - The Clash

Cracker - Kerosene Hat

Elton John - Captain Fantastic

My list isn’t comprised of universally accepted albums in the canon of all time greats, but they are albums that have spoken to me first song to last.

Together and the Bluebird Cafe - Guy Clark, TVZ, Steve Earle

The Story - Brandi Carlile

Ghost of Tom Joad - Bruce Springsteen

Ashes & Fire - Ryan Adams

Graceland - Paul Simon

Back to Black - Amy Winehouse

Dublin Blues - Guy Clark

Happy to Be Here - Todd Snider

The Sky is Crying - Stevie Ray Vaughn

Green Onions - Booker T & the MGs

Leaving Willie Nelson (Stardust (cover art by Susanna Clark) comes in 11th), Jimi Hendrix, Lyle Lovett, Kelly Willis, Charlie Robinson, Johnny Cash, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Towns Van Zandt (solo album), Lucinda Williams, Elton John, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, INXS, The Cure, Talking Heads, Prince, Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Reed, James McMurtry, Louis Armstrong, Otis Redding, and a bunch more off my list seems criminal.

Edit - just realized I necro’d this thread. I was searching for the DJing thread but couldn’t find one. Saw this and posted. Happy to find my way the the DJing thread if there is one...

Thought I would bump this thread as I realize there is an album I don’t think has been mentioned (I forgot about it for some reason when I did my Top 10 list) but Donald Fagen’s first solo album The Nightfly is a masterpiece in my opinion.  It may be one of the best sounding, best produced albums ever and if some of you on here that are into music and haven’t listened to it I would highly suggest putting on a great set of headphones and checking out the entire album.  Great music, lyrics, and I believe it was the first or one of the first albums recorded digitally back in the early 1980’s which is why it was always used as the sound check at most other bands concerts for over a decade.  Now back to your modern music you young whipper snappers and get off my lawn!

My list is somewhat fluid -- it could change tomorrow or next week.

In no particular order:

Cheap Trick -- At Budokan

Pretenders -- Pretenders

Miles Davis -- Kind of Blue

Replacements -- Tim

Plimsouls -- Everywhere At Once

Sidewinders -- Auntie Ramos' Pool Hall

Fabulous Thunderbirds -- Butt Rockin'

Beatles -- Sgt. Pepper

Bob Marley -- Legend

The Who -- Who's Next

Candidates for inclusion if this were another day:

AC/DC -- Hell's Hits (2-disc import of greatest hits -- one disc is Bon-era and the other is Brian-era)

R.E.M. -- Murmur

James Brown -- 20 All-Time Greatest Hits

Supersuckers -- The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World

Van Morrison -- Moondance

Beatles -- Beatles (White Album)

Dire Straits -- Making Movies

Cheap Trick -- Heaven Tonight

Marshall Crenshaw -- Field Day

Leroi Brothers -- Open All Night

Smithereens -- Especially For You

Hoodoo Gurus -- Mars Needs Guitars

Replacements -- Pleased To  Meet Me

Reverend Horton Heat -- Full Custom Gospel Sounds

Rave-Ups -- Chance

Paul Kelly and the Messengers -- Under the Sun

Paul Simon -- Graceland

Warren Zevon -- Excitable Boy

Beach Boys -- Pet Sounds

English Beat -- I Just Can't Stop It

Queen -- A Night at the Opera

EDIT:  Just realized I posted on this thread months ago.  Doh!  Same list except for three changes.  LIke I said, my list is fluid.

I'm not reading anyone's lists (before posting), and going off the top of my head with little aforethought.  No band gets two entries.

Drive-By Truckers "Decoration Day"

Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street"

The Replacements "Let it Be"

Turnpike Troubadours "A Long Ways From Your Heart"

James McMurtry "Just Us Kids"

Neil Young "Zuma"

Pearl Jam "Vitalogy"

Willie Nelson "Phases & Stages"

Black Crowes "Southern Harmony & Musical Companion"

Counting Crows "August & Everything After"

It's been 364 days and I stand by this list.

If I was making any substitution, I would replace "Vitalogy" with "Dreaming My Dreams".

There’s no way I could name my “Top 10” album list; so there’s no FUCKING way I could narrow it down to one discography...but, gun to head I’d have to go with Pearl Jam...no, Petty....wait REM; definitely REM.

Or Neil?

No surprise, since I started the Police thread, but I'd probably take The Police.  Tons of variety, and all good to great.  Maybe Queen, but I think I'd want something close to basic rock 'n' roll at some point.  The Police can veer in that direction, sorta.  Maybe Stevie Wonder.  No rock 'n' roll, but massive energy and tons of variety.

No way Beatles, Stones, Who, Clash, Nirvana, Led Zep, Foo, PJ.

I could sign up for all of those save REM

I'm gonna screw this up and leave something out.  I'd rather list top 10 bands.  But, in no order . . .

Beatles - Abbey Road

The Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers

Tom Petty - Wildflowers

Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues (or the full version of Stop Making Sense if we're including live albums, in which case I have to find out where to put the Dead).

David Byrne and St. Vincent - Love this Giant

Soulhat - Outdebox

Trey Anastasio - Self Titled

Phish - Story of the Ghost

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

Honorable mention:  Prince and the Revolution - Purple Rain

The Replacements - Pleased to Meet Me

Interesting topic. Since they don't have to be in any particular order, that makes it easier to do.

Interpol- Turn On The Bright Lights

The National- Trouble Will Find Me

Daft Punk- Random Access Memories

The Beatles- Abbey Road

Miles Davis- Kind Of Blue

Beach Boys- Pet Sounds

Marvin Gaye- What's Going On

Fleetwood Mac- Rumours

Beck- Sea Change

Stone Temple Pilots- Purple

Next 10, again no particular order:

Donald Fagan- The Nightfly

Eric Clapton-Unplugged

Getz/Gilberto

Arcade Fire-The Suburbs

The Cure-Mixed Up

Radiohead-In Rainbows

The Beatles- Revolver

Dave Brubeck- Time Out

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers- Moanin'

Depeche Mode- Violator

Every Picture Tells a Story - Rod Stewart

Zuma - Neil Young

Forever Changes - Love

To Our Children's Children's Children - Moody Blues

Willy and the Poor Boys - CCR

Tim - The Replacements

Every Picture Tells a Story is probably in my Top 15.  I still think that album has absolutely perfect production.
