College Football in 2020 in danger?

College athletics is going to take a huge kick in the nuts even if they play football next year. It gets a lot worse if they play in empty stadiums, and catastrophic if they cancel the season.

Football drives revenue at every BCS school. While TV revenue is the largest contributor for football, game day ticket revenue and concession revenue ain't too shabby. Here at Texas: The football program generated $38.5 million from ticket sales, compared to $28.3 million for the rest of the school's athletic programs. Thats a big chunk of coin to suddenly miss out on. How about donations to the departments? Will people continue to give at the same level when their net worth declined 20% or more?

And to be honest, I'm skeptical that Disney will be able to cover their TV Contract obligations. Their business (Theme parks, ESPN, movies, etc...) is being disproportionately  affected by the 'Rona. Will companies be spending as much on ad revenue next year? Will the economic stress accelerate cord cutting trends further eroding their revenue?

Networks and school athletic departments have been spending money like the good times would never end. Many schools are on the hook for 100's of millions of debt caused by the facilities arms race. As an example, Cal undertook $400 million of debt for the stadium upgrade and the university had to assume half the debt, because it was overwhelming the athletic department to the tune of a $20+ million dollar deficit. That was when the economy and athletics were booming. The NCAA already missed out on NCAA tourney revenue which is largely dispersed to member institutions. Do they have an insurance policy for this and if not, what replaces these funds http://www.ncaa.org/about/where-does-money-go

Regardless of what happens, plenty of schools will have to make some difficult decisions and answer the question of what their core reason for existence really is*. But if the football season is flat out cancelled for even a year, its gonna get fucking ugly. Universities are going to have plenty of their own financial issues to deal with as state tax revenue will crater. Having to bail out the AD may not be high on the list of priorities for some of these schools.

No one is playing this fall, even in empty stadiums unless A) both schools can guarantee that everyone associated with the program is clean, B) the players are tested weekly to insure they do not get infected and show up for C) the next game on the schedule.  And that's not counting the financial bloodbath that is going to happen.  No ticket sales means some athletic programs will go bankrupt.  Even Ohio State, Texas, etc is going to feel real pain on the financial side.

It's gonna suck.

Do any of you honestly believe the University of Texas is going to assume the liability of having sporting events where there is no vaccine for a virus that can potentially kill any of the participants of both teams?  Do you think the insurance carriers are just going to wave their hands and say play ball?

You need to take the hysteria out of your argument. 20 something year old athletes are not at high risk. The mortality rate for healthy, young people is on par with other respiratory viruses. The issue we are facing is the mortality of at risk people which isn’t college football players.

Yeah, you are probably right.

After the schools and conferences legal counsel sign off as well.

Two teenagers have died in the US this week. Plenty of young, healthy people are filling ICU’s all over the country. Also, plenty teams are coached by old men. If the NBA can’t figure something out by mid/late summer then there’s no chance of football. I’d love to be wrong.

Plenty of young healthy people are not “filling up ICU’s”. We can certainly debate many things but let’s start with what is actually happening.

Herbie is, and always will be, a moron of the highest order. They may play in empty stadiums, but there will be a season. 100%. No doubt. I'm worried about their prep, but not the season itself.

There’s a lot of panic porn being posted for clicks these days. No one knows shit right now especially that douchebag Herbstreet.

Insurance companies don’t give a shit about high risk.  There’s legitimate risk.  That’s their threshold.  It’s hard enough to insure anything with head injuries etc. Add in COVID and it will be a VERY tough sell.

Listen, this is all documented.  I hate to be a dick but go check the basketball COVID thread.  I’m being laughed at and people are saying ‘then shut it all down Lolol’.   48 hrs later everything was shut down.  If you’re an epidemiologist I’ll argue with you here otherwise Im going to act like I know more.

Also, I posted internal emails on all this and the economy too.  From the very top of Goldman Sachs, JPM etc.  It’s all there.

If infection rate and spread have slowed enough we will have football.  I hope we get that.  But people are assuming there’s still spread and CFB will just risk it?  LOL

Edit:  you also play doctor in your post.  Talking mortality rates.  Lol.  The whole issue is that this age group is being affected at all.  That’s enough to shut a lot of shit down.  I’ve hospitalized more under 40 somethings with COVID than all other respiratory issues (for those under 40) combined over the last 5 years.

We need time to install the offense. Fuck that. Also too fucking hot.

Only played in air conditioned indoor practice facilities and stadiums? Night games only for those programs able to secure said  facilities?

I was actually wondering about some kind of late spring ball allowance as a make up for the practices being missed now.

I don't believe they'd actually go through with the summer season. That's way too much effort for way too much risk.

If the virus is seasonal, which is definitely an if until we see that theory tested, I think it's more likely they'd kick a shortened season off in August, maybe one week early, to avoid a resurgence once cold weather sets in. Maybe conference games only or something with one bye week.

Honestly they should probably just scrap the whole season if they think they can't get it in as usual. Still too early to tell on that note, but an amount of risk high enough to start moving things around means it probably just shouldn't be played. Move all existing schedule arrangements back by one year.

IMO there won’t be a season. Already no spring practice and I can’t see things getting to a point by August where we could have a fall practice.

I disagree. This thing is so fluid. Literally changes daily. Nobody can sit here and even come remotely close to correctly assuming what 4-5 months from now holds.

I have to assume that somewhere along the way you've written a post that's worth reading.

This is not a call ADs will make. No university president wants the exposure of a kid getting infected and passing away on their watch.

This season is 100% not happening.

The best value aggy will get out of Jimbo's contract.  Zero losses.

They may be live streaming video and audio into the stadium, but they will play the games.

Not if the players and their parents don't want them to. Or the officials don't want to officiate. Or any of the multiple ancillary workers necessary for a game to be played do not want to work for fear of contracting a deadly disease.

I guess we'll find out.
