Timmy is just now noticing that there's no leadership in D1 Football?  You'd think the BCS bullshit would have clued him in.

No kidding. He brags about covering the sport for 4 decades.  You wonder how intelligent he is if he's just now noticing the lack of leadership.

People die and can be forever impacted if it ends up "not working"

Everyone keeps saying this like it’s some trump card answer to everything. It’s not the risk itself, it’s the incremental risk for playing and being part of a football team as opposed to being at home or in some other setting without the structure of school and sports.

Interesting coincidence:  After not playing for 5 years (and they were OOC before that) the Michigan-Ohio St Big Ten football rivalry began in 1918 during the height of the 2nd wave of the Spanish Flu, and will have its first interruption since then because of the China trump Flu.

If we can figure out how to play, this would totally fuck the Big 10 and PAC 12.

Maybe. But it could also fuck us if we play and a bunch of Big 12 players get myocarditis and can no longer play football and have to live with a lifetime of issues because the Big 12 decided things we work out fine. And don't kid yourself. Kids are still going to go to Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

So they're all going to drop out of school?

leaving aside the question of whether we should or shouldn't, if we DO play while Ohio State is sitting on its ass, maybe that will stop the outflow of Texas HS players to that program in particular

Didn’t a quarter of our team already get it? Do we have any numbers on how many got myocarditis?

Yes people could get sick. 15 Big 10 players got this and it had nothing to do with football. On the actual field is not where players are going to get sick. If you cancel football, do we honestly think players are just going to go home and not party with friends or go to bars? Hell they are probably more likely to engage in that behavior without having an early morning football obligation to go to.

Sooooo then why is the NFL starting next month? NBA started up just fine and they are all over each other the whole game. Quit making excuses for being inept.

NBA and NHL all have strict quarantine rules and everybody involved must remain within the "bubble" at all times. The NFL is going to try and play at this point. In this case, the difference is it's only 32 teams (compared to 100+) and the players are professional athletes earning salaries.

I don't think there is any way possible to make football risk free; including short or long term conditions.   I think it would be a disservice if the Big 12 expected them to play football and did not do everything the absolutely could to keep them safe.   It would also be a disservice to punish a kid who doesn't want to take the risk.   But if you're doing all those things than when is Covid a risk on the same mindset of all the other risks, like paralysis, or blown joints, or concussions?  All of those carry the risk of life long issues.

Maybe the biggest step they can do is offer students some sort of long term disability/healthcare package that covers anything that could happen by participating.

That’s what I’m questioning. How much higher is the risk from playing football against other players that are regularly tested vs just going to school as a regular student?

Well I guess all those programs that claim to care about the safety and well being of their players are now going to commit to making sure they stay safe outside of sports. If that's the lie we're going to go with.

According to Standard Media Index data, Fox and its cable sibling FS1 last year raked in $98.3 million in sales with their slate of Big Ten matchups, a roster that included the annual Ohio State-Michigan hate-fest and the Dec. 7 conference championship showdown between the Buckeyes and Wisconsin. Toss in another 11 non-conference games and the Fox nets generated a grand total of $124.8 million with their Big Ten coverage last year, a sum that represents 64% of the company’s total college football sales.

A healthy chunk of the cash Fox Sports generates on fall Saturdays is derived from those two aforementioned broadcasts. Per Nielsen, the 116th meeting between the Buckeyes and Wolverines scared up 12.4 million viewers and a 7.1 household rating, making it Fox’s second most-watched college football game of 2019. (This despite the fact that the 11-0 Ohio State made short work of their 9-2 rivals, crushing Michigan in the Big House by a 56-27 margin.) The following week, Fox delivered the highest-rated Big Ten Championship in six years, as the Buckeyes’ 34-21 defeat of Wisconsin averaged 13.6 million viewers and a 7.6 rating.

Quote

Aside from the SEC Championship, which aired on CBS and boasted an average rate of $323,043 per 30-second unit, the Big Ten title game was the season’s most expensive non-bowl buy ($257,296 a pop). Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh on Monday joined Ohio State’s Ryan Day in voicing his support for fall football. While it’s unlikely the khaki-clad Harbaugh will have much say in the matter, there’s no question that Fox and Disney share an outsized fondness for the rival programs, which are responsible for a staggering amount of ad spend. Ohio State alone helped the two media groups sell $79.1 million in inventory, while Michigan games accounted for north of $60 million in spend.

All told, Ohio State throws off the most ad revenue, averaging $3.32 million in sales per game, up 11% versus its 2018 deliveries. Michigan ranks No. 4, trailing LSU and Auburn, with an average draw of just over $3 million in revenue per game—an improvement of 39% compared to the previous season.

Disney’s Big Ten earnings are also considerable, as ABC and ESPN combined to take in some $74.5 million in intra-conference ad revenue, a tally that swells to $89.9 million upon application of the dollars brought to bear by their short stack of seven non-conference games. But the numbers really start adding up when all the postseason units are factored into the equation; per SMI, Big Ten teams that appeared in the seven bowl games that aired on ESPN/ABC helped Disney churn up another $110.1 million in sales.

Among the biggest draws were the Fiesta Bowl (Ohio State-Clemson), which stuffed $46.5 million into ESPN’s coffers, and the Rose Bowl (Oregon-Wisconsin, $34 million).

The Big Ten last season accounted for 20% of Disney’s regular-season college football sales. The Mouse House’s rights portfolio, which includes the ACC, SEC and Pac-12, is sufficiently broad and deep to withstand the loss of one of the Power 5 conferences, but it’s anyone’s guess as to whether a Big Ten retreat will precipitate a more far-reaching shutdown in the days to come.

They're going to cancel spring football, but that doesn't detract from his point.

If they do not feel safe now, nothing will be different in January. This sets the stage for an entire season cancelled. I understand their decision I just wish they would be honest. What metric would you follow to say it’s “safe” to play. But they won’t because they did not use one.

Within 48 hours large portions of athletes will be jammed into an undersized underground frat house that was kicked off campus due to liability.  They will have 6’ of separation & all drink from the same bottles if not recycle 50 red solo cups.

They're saying postponed instead of cancelled because that keeps schools from suing to leave or having grounds to back out of contracts.

Be real man, nobody is likely to get myocarditis. Nobody is going to die. Give the players an opt out with no penalty if they are scared. Most players will choose to play to help further their careers. They are safer under the 24 hour medical care they will get at the school than if they get it at home.

Sure. But it’s clear the Big 10 and PAC 12 will play their next game in the fall of 2021.
