Well I ain't afraid of dying it's the thought of being dead
I want to go on being me once my eulogy's been read
Don't spread my ashes out to sea don't lay me down to rest
You can put my mind at ease if you fill my last request
Prop me up beside the jukebox if I die
Lord I want to go to heaven but I don't want to go tonight
Fill my boots up with sand put a stiff drink in my hand
Prop me up beside the jukebox if I die
Just let my headstone be a neon sign
Just let it burn in mem'ry of all of my good times
Fix me up with a mannequin just remember I like blondes
I'll be the life of the party even when I'm dead and gone
Prop me up...

My BIL’s Dad grew up with him in a small OK town and they stayed friends through the years. He said Joe was super-nice and a stand up guy.

As a middle-schooler I loved his music. It’s not my cup of tea anymore but I’m not gonna lie I did listen to a few of his tunes last night with a cold beer in hand on the back porch.

RIP Joe.

I'm not a huge American Aquarium fan but that's a great cover.  Acoustic changes the whole feel of the song

I really like the way he kinda punches up the end of each verse line in a kind of yearning way, vocally.

I love American Aquarium too, so I'm a bit biased.

Now that you say that I do too.  There was something I couldn't put my finger on and I believe that's it.

Thanks for the link I've been listening to a bunch of his covers.  John Prine, Bruce and maybe my favorite Turnpike song

Yeah, I've been checking in every day.  His Joe Exotic cover is great too.

Bird Hunters is probably my favorite song anyone wrote in the past decade.

That whole album is great.  They nailed the whole thing

Outside of their first, out of print album ("Bossier City") I can probably count the songs I skip in their entire discography on one hand.  They were remarkably consistent.  They weren't the most prolific songwriters, but they almost never put any duds out there either.

Normally I'd agree with you but this morning as I had my coffee, "The Funeral" came across my playlist.

That's a fantastic song as well.  I'm still Team Bird Hunters, but I guess it just speaks to the quality of their catalog.
