I watch MidwayUSA, luckygunner, SGAmmo and AmmoToGo daily to see what is in stock.  Last week, supplies were very limited with very few options for 9mm or .45 acp.  Yesterday, all had plenty of stock with prices from .21 to .35 per round.  Higher than before, but less than 2 weeks ago.  There is still plenty of demand out there.  I got a notification yesterday from MidwayUSA that they had S&B 124 grain 9mm ammo in 1000 round cases.  By the time I dicked around the yard, went to get drive thru lunch and back home, they were sold out.

There may be spotty supply on this load in the months ahead. Personally I really liked this product because it gave the customer a chance for American made 300 Blackout ammo with a premium expanding projectile at a price that was competitive with import FMJ options.

If just to shoot at the range- go to SGAmmo and grab a 420 rd can of Federal American Eagle 55gr.  at $0.38 / rd.

It’ll go bang.  Then if you want something for home defense or more precision shooting you can buy a box or two as appropriate after that.

wife came home a few days ago, says she got us an "armalite rifle". Good job woman, this impressed me. So I want to get her at least 420rds and teach her how to use this thing.

I've never bought ammunition online, nor have I ever used 5.56. Send me in the right direction?

It's like we're in 'Nam and there aren't any rules.  If you're not gonna post pics of your wife you should at least post a pic of a rifle she bought.

What’s the best round for home defense? I read a while back about something, 300 blackout I think, but also read that they tend to go through walls? I’m in a city neighborhood

.300 Blackout is a different caliber than the 5.56 .  You could buy a .300 BO upper for your AR-15 and convert it but the ammunition isn’t interchangeable with your stock rifle (assuming it is a 5.56 chambering).

Basically- Any centerfire caliber can over penetrate with the right (wrong) bullet so it’s not the caliber, but the bullet selection that matters.

Opinions vary on the “best” home defense rounds and like assholes, everyone has one.

My preference for 5.56 or .300BO for that matter would be a Controlled Chaos round by Lehigh Defense.  I’m partial to their bullet design for home defense due to field experience and I have seen the Controlled Chaos terminal performance on thin skinned animals in real life.  Devastating wound channels with no pass through.....Again, just my opinion based on my experience.

if you want to go with the .300BO chambering you’ll need a new upper and will swap out the 5.56 upper (or buy a new rifle chambered in .300BO) Takes 30 seconds to change an upper. Just be careful not to mix magazines - mark them properly so you don’t cause an accident.

The .300BO vs. 5.56 debate is an entirely different debate.

At personal defense range, ANY 5.56 hollow, soft or ballistic point will kill real good. Same for 300 Blk. Regarding wall penetration, just about anything can do that if you're unlucky.

Jesus this. At 2700-3100fps of muzzle velocity, it’s going through Sheetrock unless you hit a stud.

Shotgun rounds if you’re super worried about that.

SGAmmo market commentary-  Take it FWIW

A lot has changed in the ammo business over the past 40 days as the Covid-19 outbreak created the largest rush to purchase ammo in all of history. Supply has been badly diminished, and bottlenecks in manufacturing and distribution will continue cause shortages for months yet to come. From what I am seeing the worst is yet to come on ammunition availability which I believe will reach its worst in the next 30 to 90 days. The buyer's market conditions which I have talked about in so many prior newsletters that brought ammo prices to 12 year lows in 2018, 2019 and early 2020 have passed. I hope most people followed my advise in the past and stocked up while supply and prices were at their best. At this time supply has for the most part been bought up, most ammo factories and importers have done substantial price increases, and moving forward availability will be limited to what the factories can make and allocate to their distributors. Covid-19 has caused some ammunition factories in Europe and Russia to close and / or reduce production, and most likely that will spill over here to some of the manufacturers in the USA at some point. I'd love to stay positive but realistically there are dark times ahead for the ammunition supply chain. All things considered, I believe we still have some decent deals in stock, admittedly not as good as they were, but not as bad as I expect them to become. If you are sitting on large quantities of ammo it might be wise to sit it out for a while but if you are short in supply it might be a good idea to get a few cases before availability gets worse. We thank you for your support of our family owned and operated business and will do our best to serve our clients well in these strange times, so please stay subscribed for future SGAmmo newsletters. If you have some spare time please take a few minutes and look over the online catalog at www.SGAmmo.com

It is funny how that old man (disclaimer: no idea if he is actually old) has been saying in his emails forever how "price are low, buy now before there's another shortage they go up!" and now there is a shortage and prices have gone up. Good on him.

How is the supply of reloading components?  Most of my gear is packed away in storage so I haven't rolled any rounds in a long time nor bought any components but has it gotten to like it was in 2012 when you stores were only allowing you to buy 100 primers at a time?  I was shooting IDPA then  and ammo and components where scarce and eventually laid up a pretty good stock when things finally came available.

I've heard that market is really tight as well.  Some shortages and higher pricing.

I don't know that from personal experience shopping it but I've seen mention of reloaders being frustrated by availability of certain powders, primers, etc.

Picked up:
140 rounds Hornady vmax for 300bo
40 rounds of eld-x for 6.5c
250 rounds federal brass ball

300bo was on sale for $18.69
Eld-x was a good price
9mm was $9.99/50

All at bass pro in RR.

I have some other 300bo and more 6.5c on order from Natchez.

It’s out there. Use ammoseek to find it.

SGAmmo just updated their inventory and pricing.

Link here SGAmmo 4/17/20

Provides what they have in stock and is also of interest even if you aren't in the market now b/c the owner gives bits of info, what he sees in the pipeline and when he expects other shipments as well.  Take it for what its worth but my experience has been that he is honest about market conditions and the supply chain overall.

Particularly interesting are the comments below some of the Russian rounds and how the supply chain has been interrupted.   That'll have an effect on domestically made stuff if the European product dries up.

For what it's worth........

Thank you for subscribing to the SGAmmo.com newsletter. If you have trouble viewing this email you can see the newsletter at this link: Bulk Ammo in Stock - Fast Shipping

As mentioned in my last 3 newsletters a lot has changed in the ammo business over the past few months as the Covid-19 outbreak created the largest rush to purchase ammo in all of history. This has greatly reduced supply stockpiles and driven prices up substantially from the 12 year bottom they hit in 2019 and early 2020. We had made huge investments in inventory but our stockpiles here at SGAmmo are really running thin, especially in 9mm FMJ, 223 / 5.56 and 300 Blackout, additionally 7.62x39, 308 Win, 22LR, 45 Auto as well as many other popular calibers are not looking good either. Getting resupplied from the factories has also not been going well. Basically every gun shop and sporting goods store in the USA sold out of inventory by late March and now all of those dealers seek to resupply, causing a mass-buy at the dealer level on top of the consumer level, which is thinning availability from ammunition factories and distributors. This new level of demand has lead most factories to raise prices, eliminate 'special deals' which are key to keeping prices attractive and allocate stock in very limited amounts. This combination of issues effectively reduces the flow to high volume dealers like SGAmmo. Many factories have also reworked their process in attempt to protect their staff from COVID19 which has reduced their capacity substantially, so in general less ammo is being made today. I'd love to stay positive but realistically there are dark times ahead for the ammunition supply chain. All things considered, I believe we still have some decent deals in stock, admittedly not as good as they were 2 months ago, but not as bad as I expect them to become. If you are sitting on large quantities of ammo it might be wise to sit it out for a while but if you are short in supply it might be a good idea to get a few cases before availability gets worse.
