I don't think it's that.  I only had it for the first time a few years ago so no childhood memories for me.  I think Jiggy is right about it's competition playing a part.  When you are used to eating muddy catfish or bass that taste like the lake, it is a hell of a nice surprise.

Walleye has an overrated reputation due to its regional freshwater competition.  I have had it many times as both my ex wife and current wife are from South Dakota(that is another story) and I have traveled to the SD/ Minn/Wisc. tri state area annually for the last 30 years or so. It is still very good and miles better than any bass and not as good as trout.

I have a fishing buddy that I visit here in Austin on occasion and this topic always comes up after a few cocktails.  He swears walleye is better than speckled trout, flounder or pompano, but I think he is also associating it with childhood memories and he is also a Trumper(just to keep it topical), so I am pretty sure he is full of shit.

I have not had any luck catching walleye up north.  The LMBs are as stupid as the day is long up there though and they love them some saltwater topwaters in the summer as do the northerns.

Agree with most of this.  Your friend is crazy though if he thinks walleye eats better than flounder.  But like you said, his judgement is questionable.  LMB up north will hit topwaters.  They don't taste as good as Texas bass though, not sure why.  Northern Pike is a worthy adversary but they taste like if musty lakes had feet.

Curious if Trump will carry the Walleye voter this time around.  That's actually a thing in MI/WI/MN.

I don't fully agree with the idea that mail-in votes will take days to count. Many cities/counties are already planning for the surge in mail-in and have taken steps to raise their capacity. Even to the point that they may start counting those votes before election day. Florida already allows for this. I imagine an official cannot count early without proper authority.

and with everyone being afraid of their mail in ballot not counting, I bet many people return it the day after their receive it.  Few people will wait to mail it that day.

I'm not sure how many People you've met in America in your lifetime, but man, I've sure met a fuck ton who are absent-minded, lazy, and generally habitual procrastinators. Mix in a healthy dose of folks who still don't give a fuck about this election and, well...

I'm going to push back a little bit on this, because it has basically become conventional wisdom.
The networks have a huge role in setting the narrative of an election.  Even though they have incomplete information, their calls and assessments enter the popular consciousness and frame the election forever after.  In 2018, the early narrative was that there wasn't much of a "blue wave."  As it turned out, the Democrats won 40 seats.  And most notoriously in 2000, the early call of Florida for Gore led to a lot of the consternation that followed.
In those cases, the issue wasn't with early votes or mail-in ballots.  It was with counting the Election Day votes.
The real benefit of mail-in votes is that they are really easy to exit poll.  You can get a list of people from whom ballots have been received and then poll and random sample.  So even without those ballots having been received/counted, the networks are going to have a really good picture on Election Night about how those votes are going to go.
So what you're going to see is a bunch of John King or Steve Kornacki in front of the big board saying, "yes, Trump currently has the lead but there are too many votes still uncounted and we expect those to shift the race to Biden."  They're going to out-and-out tell you that Biden is going to win once all the votes are counted.
And so Trump can go out there and declare victory.  But no network/wire is going to call it for him.  They may even call it for Biden on Election Night.  And those election calls are what sets the expectation for the public--not what dumbfuck Trump says.

I think this is a good take in general but I'm not sure I trust FOX News to behave in good faith at that point. They'd absolutely be airing Trump claims to victory, reporting on all seven instances of fraud, etc.

I'm not entirely sure that a Trump victory is in Fox's best interests.  The "stickiness" of their viewership might even thrive if they are more obviously the opposition.

The mom jeans were a nice touch, Dan.  I like how you carry your cell phone in your back left pocket too, like a woman.

You couldn't be anymore more in the closet if you came with 19 other cedar blocks from the Container Store.

Fish talk: Lots of Texans think there is no walleye fishing in Texas, but there was a solid population in Lake Meredith prior to the drought when the reservoir turned into an empty salt ringed canyon. The cooler fall and spring temperatures allow for solid growth.

State record is 11.88 lb, from Meredith.

Driving from Austin to SA, took 290 to 281. Not surprising but Trump signs everywhere. Flipping Texas will always rely on the cities turning out. I wonder if the numbers are there yet.

Four years ago I was driving back from Caddo Lake and didn't see a single Trump sign in a front yard on our route thru East Texas. Dozens of Hillary signs though.

On the subject of the Hispanic vote I completely believe it is over 15% for Trump. It is probably closer to 25%. I was incredulous to this idea 3+ years ago but I get it now.

The single issue Catholic anti-abortion vote is a lot of it of course. But a good deal can be explained by a simple analogy: Upon passing the bar, new lawyers overwhelming agree there are too many lawyers.

This is not unique to Hispanic immigrants, documented or not, even several generations in. A few nights ago I had a CNN show on in the background and new Syrian immigrants, now citizens, very much supported Trump. They felt they have persevered and their hard work had paid off. This is undoubtedly true. They viewed Trump and Republicans as the face of the American dream and those that have not achieved are undesirable, and competition is not welcome.

Having spent a lot of time in the valley, the conservative hispanics I have met (skewing younger) tend to be predominantly male and tend not to give a shit about immigration and are not even really that religious.  In my experience, they are largely similar in outlook to the stereotypical white, exurb inhabiting conservatives.

Yeah, what kind of a dipshit promotes an endorsement from the former governor of a critical swing state, but not the endorsement from a random white supremacist grifter provocateur?   Lmao, indeed, at doing ... exactly what any sane person would do.

In terms of harm done, the white supremacist is less morally culpable than the former governor who poisoned shit loads of black people.  Maybe this callous indifference to the suffering of minorities is why Biden is doing so horribly with them compared to Hilldawg.

If Snyder had killed every man woman and child in the city of Flint he would be at a little over half of Trump’s body count. And Trump’s not done

If you don’t see a problem with the Republicans becoming the party of workers and what that foreshadows then you must not have a handle on much of anything.

Up to this week, COVID has killed the equivalent of Salem, OR or Providence, RI or Newport News, VA.  By next week it will be the equivalent of Brownsville or Ft. Lauderdale or Shreveport or Knoxville. Biden's team needs to be running ads that tell the numbers with these sorts of markers. By the time the election rolls around, if death rates continue as they have to this point, we're looking at death totals equivalent to Salt Lake City, Baton Rouge, Spokane or Irving.

I think it would hit people pretty damn hard to think about a city in their lives being completely 100% dead due to the COVID disaster.

and he/they would start each semester by saying something to the effect of, "Okay, young people.  Let's line up there on the wall.  There's a big rumor going around this campus.  I've heard it for many years now.  I hear y'all whispering and giggling about it in the hallways. Okay?  Now, I am aware of what students, what you young people have been saying about me for quite awhile.  Not my first rodeo, I've been at this school for 17 years.  And that rumor...is...that I am very tough grader.  And that's true."

After 6 long years with Dan Patrick...know what my favorite fact about him is?  That fully 1/3+ of Surly will go running to the defense of Trump, but nobody will defend Dan Patrick on here despite probably a full third of the site users, maybe more...are active voters/supporters of Dan Patrick.  That's way more interesting to me than the Trump deal..

Yup. Just like all of my Republican friends that professed to despise Ted Cruz but lined up to vote for him over Beto.

This. Out in West Texas, the second and third generation Mexican Americans are every bit as white trash, flag waiving, gun toting, immigrant hating as their white buddies. Go to the Midland Reporter Telegram Facebook page and look at the comments on any political article. That’ll tell you all you need to know and make you weep for your fellow man.

I mean, Fozz is a piece of shit poster, and he can get fucked six-hundred and sixty six ways from sunday, but the point brought up is an interesting one for discussion. Things won't be the same after Trump, even if he loses, and the uneducated/poor/working class is now firmly in the bed of the Red Party. They touched on it in the discussion of the Kennedy whelp that just lost. The working class blue collar worker that the Kennedy's built their brand on and relied upon were now firmly Trump voters. And I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Now, if you're referring to the party that actually DOES something for the workers, well, sure. But in terms of popularity that shift is in and I think it is permanent. It's not about the class, imo, at this point it's about education and resentment. It's the people who haven't gotten as far as they'd liked while others get rich, it's the people who see what little superiority they've felt they've had (white, male) become more and more marginalized through immigration, education of others, equal rights, women out of the home, etc. So they're voting to normalize all their personal insecurities. That now trumps a paycheck. There aren't groups of union guys heading down to the bar after work for a beer to normalize their viewpoints. They go home to Facebook and get more and more to the fringe. There aren't built in communities to keep an even keep and to promote a sense of ownership in class. It's just how you feel.

I think it makes sense to stop viewing the Republican party as something akin to a Class or mentality, like a working man's party, etc. It makes more sense to define the parties by an ethos, at this point. The right will be the super wealthy who want to keep it all and the uneducated who want their horrible insecurities to be normalized and given a sense of superiority where none is merited.

What a fat, soft wimpy bastard Dan Patrick is. How any self-respecting Texan can look at that guy and then go vote for him, regardless of party, is beyond me. Obviously never done a hard day's work in his entire life.
