I understand sympathizing with WWI conscripts who had no choice in the matter, but what's wrong with Trump calling McCain a loser?  He wasn't drafted and he committed God knows what atrocities against those poor people.  Honoring that bullshit would be like Germans memorializing veterans of the Condor Legion.  Imagine them getting pissed because someone dishonored the memory of some dipshit who crashed his plane outside of Guernica lmao.

I think we should have at least the ability to have honest conversations about these matters without immediately retreating to the safe harbor of ideology.  I think it's clearly unhealthy for what bills itself as a Republic to be incapable of having those conversations and that inability provides cover for some truly awful things that the good people of our country would not otherwise stomach.

You're actually right that there is a conversation worth having about the way we view our military and how it helps shape American civil religion.

But come on, you're clearly not REALLY interested in that or you wouldn't approach it this way.

This is true and it isn't. People reallllly misunderstand Trumps base. It's not working class whites, it's middle to upper middle suburban/exurban whites who are 100% fueled by resentment and insecurity. It's not tax policy, or or trade issues, or any of that. It is full bore grievance about cultural inferiority. There has actually been quite a bit of good stuff written on this, but it's gets lost in the typical bullshit media cycle of interviewing some poor working class schmuck in Altoona Pa in a diner. The Johnny Sacks of the world are Trumps base.

I love how this term has been redefined on this board as meaning “stuff I don’t like.”

Maybe I could have been more diplomatic but sorry that’s just how I see things. There are wars where one side is the clear instigator and perpetrator thereof and for reasons which are manifestly unjust. In those occasions, why should we treat participants on our (the bad side) with any reverence whatsoever?  I get not ascribing culpability to draftees or even enlistees to which the armed forces offered opportunities that were otherwise unavailable. However, the subject of this conversation is not one of those cases, and he’s someone who didn’t need to fight in that war to have the opportunity live a full, meaningful life.

Because shit changes. When I committed to five years of service we weren’t at war with Afghanistan. A year later we were.
And I will argue that many Americans are virtually drafted. Their communities offer so few options and the military is so forcefully pushed that it’s their only productive legal option.

I mean, Fozz is a piece of shit poster, and he can get fucked six-hundred and sixty six ways from sunday, but the point brought up is an interesting one for discussion. Things won't be the same after Trump, even if he loses, and the uneducated/poor/working class is now firmly in the bed of the Red Party. They touched on it in the discussion of the Kennedy whelp that just lost. The working class blue collar worker that the Kennedy's built their brand on and relied upon were now firmly Trump voters. And I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Now, if you're referring to the party that actually DOES something for the workers, well, sure. But in terms of popularity that shift is in and I think it is permanent. It's not about the class, imo, at this point it's about education and resentment. It's the people who haven't gotten as far as they'd liked while others get rich, it's the people who see what little superiority they've felt they've had (white, male) become more and more marginalized through immigration, education of others, equal rights, women out of the home, etc. So they're voting to normalize all their personal insecurities. That now trumps a paycheck. There aren't groups of union guys heading down to the bar after work for a beer to normalize their viewpoints. They go home to Facebook and get more and more to the fringe. There aren't built in communities to keep an even keep and to promote a sense of ownership in class. It's just how you feel.

I think it makes sense to stop viewing the Republican party as something akin to a Class or mentality, like a working man's party, etc. It makes more sense to define the parties by an ethos, at this point. The right will be the super wealthy who want to keep it all and the uneducated who want their horrible insecurities to be normalized and given a sense of superiority where none is merited.

As loathsome as Trump is, there are legitimate reasons why lower income workers would favor him.  While I disagree with protectionist trade policies I can see why it would be appealing to a guy working in a slowly shrinking factory.  While I disagree with stricter immigration policies, particularly the cruelty which Trump endorses, I can see why a roofer might find it appealing.

But, while that may demonstrate a political advantage of courting these voters with these policies, I don't think it is a viable platform, long term, for the Republican Party.  It's one thing push a steel tariff.  It's another thing to deal with the consequences - higher construction costs, retaliation by other countries against our ag products, etc..  Long term, I don't see the GOP sticking with a protectionist trade policy.  I think they are also going to get pushed by big business on immigration.  If the low-income workers dream comes true - if wages really increased because of stricter immigration - it means that corporations are paying more.  The Republicans have not been very successful in maintaining a big tent, and it would be really difficult for the GOP to cater to both the low income workers and the wealthy who would be paying them more.  And we know who funds the Party.

Assuming Trump loses, and I believe he will, and assuming the GOP loses ground in the House, the Senate, and state governments, and I think they will, the Trump model will proven to be a failure.  Certainly both parties will work to court the Trump voter.  But these are not well thought out policies and they do not benefit a majority of people in the country.  It's not just bad policies; it's bad politics.

Stepping off of Fozz's nuts for a while. What are y'alls' thoughts on a potential government shutdown.

It looks like Pelosi and Mnuchin are pulling out the stops to avoid a shutdown, but the big baby may torpedo this out of spite.

https://thehill.com/policy/finance/515060-mnuchin-pelosi-reach-informal-deal-to-avoid-government-shutdown

Quote

reasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have informally agreed to pursue a clean, short-term stopgap measure to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month, sources in both parties confirmed Thursday.

That means the continuing resolution (CR) needed to keep the government open past Sept. 30 would be free of controversial policy riders that have bogged down previous funding bills, significantly lowering the odds of a shutdown leading up to the crucial Nov. 3 elections.

The tentative deal also means the government funding bill and a new coronavirus relief package being negotiated between Pelosi and Mnuchin would not be part of the same talks.

Both Mnuchin and Pelosi, who spoke Tuesday, agreed to “work to avoid a shutdown and keep the government open, and that the best way to do that is a clean CR,” said a source familiar with the talks.

“House Democrats support a clean continuing resolution,” added Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters Thursday: "We do believe that we'll be able to get funding to avoid a shutdown."

The duration of the CR is not clear at this point, but the most likely option is that the government will be funded until December, when Congress would need to return for a lame-duck session to pass another short-term bill to fund the government into 2021.

The sources familiar with the talks said it’s possible any coronavirus relief deal reached this month could still hitch a ride on the CR but emphasized the items would run on separate tracks.

I would be ecstatic if government stays open to ensure the elections go smoothly, but also wouldn't mind bunker boy get crushed by being a bitch about it.

Trump's approval took a nosedive into the 30s in the January 2019 shutdown. It'd be really stupid of him to do that.

So it's pretty likely I guess.

Lol no. Pussy grabbing ring a bell?

There is no major talking point against Biden that cannot be tripled and thrown back at Trump.  I'm not saying this excuses Biden for his entire past, or even that all rumors are true, but Trump is far closer to "demented" than Biden, Trump has allegedly committed far more and more serious instances of sexual misconduct than Biden, and . . . well, Trump is not only evil but stupid, neither of which can be said of Biden.  Oh yeah, Trump is a whore for Russia.

I am taking heart that both Biden and even the Democrats writ large seem to be actually fighting back.  We'll see if it sticks.

Plus, Fox News just confirmed the story. It's over, he's done.

Depends on the shit gibbon.  Pelosi agreeing to do a clean CR is a good indicator the Democrats don’t want to fight.  It’s also encouraging to see they’ve pulled Meadows out of the room.

I would prefer the CR run until mid February.  I’m worried Trump will shut the government down if he loses.

Also: There is no peak Trump. You’ll get a bunch of Senators saying they haven’t seen the story, McCarthy will demand investigations into hair cuts, Barr will tease a Jeff Dunham indictment drop, Fox will straighten its shit out after a Trump OANN tweet, and the tilt-a-hurl will start up again.

Still nothing on front page of Fox News web page. Top story is meth flooding into the US. Then some bitching about Biden getting softball questions at press conference.

I get it. CNN's gonna CNN. FoxNews's gonna FoxNews. Neither should be considered a legitimate news source. That said. Fox News can gag on Ron Jeremy's cock.

Biden needs to respond "Trump says American POWs are losers because they got caught. Easy for him to say, he decided he was too rich to serve his country." Start fucking with his base of uneducated low-income workers -- the same ones he describes as suckers and losers, and the same ones he'd never dare to let into his resorts. "You like him, but he's fucking YOU over! Don't be a sucker!"

A FOX News reporter confirming on twitter doesn't change anything. It won't get airtime. If it does, Trump supporters will cry fake news. If they're forced to admit it's true, they'll pivot to claiming the military is filled with snowflake libtards.

"Moderates" (you aren't moderate if you're considering Trump, your fascist-adjacent) who are undecided will find a way to dismiss it and but Biden/Democrats/Socialism/Destroy my suburb it into a Trump vote because if yoy haven't seen anything to dissuade you from voting Trump by now, nothing will. A dumb comment isn't going to change that.

He's degraded America in so many ways, watch people give him pass after pass, or even cheer it on, and y'all think a soundbite is gonna do him in. 180k Americans dead in five months with marginal movement in polls but this will get him. Okay.

This. Out in West Texas, the second and third generation Mexican Americans are every bit as white trash, flag waiving, gun toting, immigrant hating as their white buddies. Go to the Midland Reporter Telegram Facebook page and look at the comments on any political article. That’ll tell you all you need to know and make you weep for your fellow man.

I have a Hispanic friend who has been real active in the D party in Dallas county.   I asked him about this and his response was similar to your take, but only for the ones like 30-60.  He said the older Mexicans remember the days when the D party was good to them and vote accordingly.  He also said the younger Mexicans definitely lean more liberal.   But that mid range group fits your description closely.  Abortion and family values...and somehow the R's hold the high ground with them on the latter too.

Whoever spoke about the "I got mine, fuck the others" (including immigrants) is very right on.

Damn, it's tough watching Biden speak. Poor guy.

The reason it's tough for these gibbons to watch Biden is it stumps the hell out of them when they get asked a rhetorical question.   They have been programmed to uptake what they are told, not to question anything.  Plus it probably wears them out to have to compute thoughts laid out in complete sentences one after another, like a paragraph.  With Dotard, they get lots of breaks, short phrases...the important stuff is in all caps.

My point is that this, like everything else, will not dissuade Trump voters as was suggested.

No one's mind is changing at this point. will get his 45ish percent of the vote. The majority of us that live in reality need to show up and vote. Between trying to cheat and demographic advantages in the Midwest, every bit if that 7-8 percent Biden advantage will need to turnout. GOTV is the fight that matters.

Things Republicans are still against, in 2020:

1. LEGALIZED WEED

2. SOCIAL SECURITY

3. MEDICARE

4. COVERING PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS

***Note: a majority of Republican voters may in fact want legalized weed. The House is about to pass a bill doing this. The GOP Senate will REJECT IT. Their leaders do not care what their dumb base wants. They'll sell them some lie why it "can't be done."..

why do people vote for this dumb ass party?
