I owned a business 13 years ago and today received a letter from Ken Paxton that I have 10 days to respond. I did walk away from the owed sales taxes.

Is this still collectable by the State or will they sell it off to a collector?

What's the amount owed before penalties, interest and what not?

Is it fraud if you tell them you're not changing your name to commit fraud?

Probably.  Like fraud squared.  But it's perjury at the very least.

I'm speaking in terms of Alabama law.  I'd think Texas is similar.  They have established a liability within their statute of limitations. Because the liability was assessed when it was within statute, you are still liable.  You owe the tax/interest/penalties.  Call them to set up a payment plan or close all of your in state bank accounts, sell all off your in state property, or move north and/or west and don't leave a forwarding address.  They'll put liens on any property they know that you own and garnish any bank accounts that you have.

And as previously stated, if you collected the tax and didn't remit it to the state, you're a thief
