D and DMN are going after Griggs for some campaign contribution stuff.  Looks like over the years he took a few contributions from kids (possibly shady, but not illegal) and some that aggregate to over the limit for adults (possibly illegal).   He is correcting the reporting errors and returning money, but he clearly should have been better about that it.  Am I wrong in thinking it's a common mistake that campaigns make and if it's only a handful of items in many reports over the years (not indicative of a trend or intent to manipulate) it's not a big deal?  The reporting shows that other council members did the same thing, but they are not running for Mayor against the establishment.   I have already one set of friends that are withdrawing their support of him at least for now.

My kids make a lot of political contributions.

Wait, what?

I did not see this coming.

How desperate are the old cronies to stop Griggs?   A bunch of rich Republicans just sent out an endorsement letter and contribution solicitation for Eric Johnson, a progressive Democrat.

Big Money Lines up for Johnson

I sorta know Eric and his wife (hung out a bit years ago, now FB friends).  He is a sharp, grounded, and very likable Ivy League guy.  I have supported him.  If it wasn't for Griggs, I would support him in this election too.   His getting in bed with the Citizens Counsel is out of left field (at least for me) and troubling.

From the D Story:

Quote

... Jim Schutze must be frothing at the mouth and fighting tumescence. Without any proof, he’s been peddling a conspiracy about the Park Cities oligarchy doing whatever it can to torpedo Scott Griggs. Now he’s got this fundraising letter!

With Eric's excellent campaign management and broad South Dallas support, this backing rockets him up, joining Griggs at the top of the leaderboard.   If the support from the North Dallas, Park Cities, White Business Community holds up, we now have our two man race.

Well, Dallas' first black mayor carried a shitload of water for whitey, why not both?  Whitey also used Kirk to use the Price/McNeal South Dallas vote-generation apparatus to give us that whole Trinity boondoggle and Victory.  He may have been the worst thing to happen to Dallas in the last 30 plus years.

*Neal, not McNeal.

Laura Miller is going to challenge Jennifer Staubach-Gates for her city council seat. There really should be a law that previous council members or mayors can't run for other seats if they change districts.

I think it's hilarious that Laura Miller is running for City Council. It changes the dynamic for many races now including Mayor. Gates has been sleepwalking through her terms on city council. Now she will have to spend a lot of money to beat Miller.

Also, Laura Miller and Scott Griggs roughly align on some issues. I would expect a Miller voter to cast a ballot for Griggs as well in an election.

Isn't the driving force behind why she's running is Gates pissed her off on the skyrise being built around Preston Village Shopping Center?

Pretty much. The Preston Center issue has been slow boiling since at least 1998. That was back when Foley's folded and left a lot of empty space behind. Hard to imagine it's a NIMBY issue since it is so far away from standard 1 story residential dwellings.

I'd wonder what Mark Cuban thinks about Preston Center and Gates. Cuban has been quietly buying up all the lots north of Northwest Highway and east of Douglas. Why, I don't know.

Cuban and his opinion would sway a lot of monied voters in that area.

I think Vickery Meadow apartment dwellers and the other marginalized folks near Bachman Lake would vote for Miller as well.

Oddly, looks like Paul Sims (husband of Angela Hunt) is quitting his campaign for District 9. He was the odds on favorite for that district. That leaves some weak candidates for that position: former personal assistant for the current mayor, former personal assistant for a former county commissioner and a bored housewife.

The bored housewife posts all the time on the Lakewood neighborhood Facebook group. She has some really dumb takes, and tends to post a lot with the trolls that live there. Not a very good sign.

Former City Councilperson Carolyn Davis pleads guilty to bribery in federal court this morning. Another one bites the dust!

So many crooks at City Hall I am starting to lose count of how many city council members are either currently in prison or waiting to go.

Schutze writes, with some restraint in my opinion, about one of the darkest moments in recent Dallas political history:  the trumped up charges that Mayor Rawlings and his city attorney fabricated against Scott in 2015 or so.   It was really despicable.  Apparently, the DMN is now using that incident against Scott in its coverage of the mayor's race.

The Dallas Morning News on its editorial page last week repeated again a flagrant and malicious lie about Dallas City Council member and mayoral candidate Scott Griggs. The lie is a window on how the old-guard leadership in the city really operates and the depths to which it is willing to sink to preserve influence and power

Gawd I love Jim Schutze.

The problem, though, as I see it, is that Griggs probably did say that.  He's a nice guy, but he doesn't suffer fools and everyone has their breaking point.

I didn’t know Davis was smart enough to commit that type of crime.

Dallas politics is a nightmare. We have a candidate for Mayor taking $1k donations from kids in elementary school and now a city councilman has a warrant out because he was filming a gay porno movie in a parking garage or something?

It seems like for about 25 years Dallas has been one election away from going full Detroit.

Looks like Sarah Lamb who is running for City Council is married to the infamous Stolen Valor fraud Mike Lamb who claimed to be a Recon Marine among other things for 15 years before being outed.

After seeing her vapid takes on my local FB neighborhood page this is no surprise.

Mike Ablon is money whipping this race. Don’t know anything about him other than he seems cut from the same cloth as Stuabach-Gates and Rawlings. I expect the white citizens council to have him do their bidding.

I've seen his signs all over east Dallas but I have no idea who the hell he is. Right now I'm stuck between voting for Eric Johnson and Miguel Solis.

Here’s some high level stuff. DMN has more detailed info but their mobile site has Ebola and I won’t link to it. I’d also make sure you understand the background on some of the candidates (McBee, Black, Ablon were all waist deep in the trinity toll road disaster)

When the real reason that Clayton is leaving the city council is made public, remember this thread. It will be either a serious problem with the State Fair of Texas or dealings with the Timberlawn mental health facility. I hear strong rumors. I think some in the media are tipped about it and holding back on it till the mayoral election draws near. You'll notice soon that everyone will distance themselves from Clayton and quietly ask him not to endorse them in other offices.

I think that former city councilman Gary Griffith is trying to drum up someone out of the Lakewood elementary attendance zone to run for Clayton's seat. Someone who would push for restaurants at White Rock Lake and expansion of the Arboretum on behalf of the monied Park Cities folk.

Still stand by this?

Also, I just took a peek at the MLS for Mrs. McBee's place in HP.  Shockingly it's still on the market.

Yes. Still stand by the Timberlawn issue. I early voted today as well,  for Scott Griggs. Really hope he wins. His tenure as Mayor would be wonderful for Dallas and Dallas residents.

For what it's worth, I bike by there fairly often and the house is unoccupied. It will be interesting if they move back.

If, as reported, they are renting a place, I wouldn't expect the homestead exemption to change until they sell it or buy another place.  They wouldn't be the first people to neglect to change the exemption, at least until property tax time rolls around.

So Griggs in a runoff with Johnson.  Don't know much about Johnson, but I sense that he's not Ron Kirk, but not the Citizens' Council's ideal candidate, either.  It's too bad the Prica/Neal absentee voting machine is probably going to rig this election, too.

Interesting and quite good that it comes down to Johnson and Griggs. I really won't be unhappy if either one of them wins. Just glad Mike Albion got left out.  In my area, the Lakewood FB mom wasn't able to get in the runoff. Curious which of the two the Lakewood set throws their support behind but I'd imagine Paula Blackmon is more likely. Maybe Erin Moore will get a bump after Clayton's endorsement.

Very surprised that D14 is going to a run off. Kingston is an asshole but he has a lot of passionate supporters. I guess people are finally done with his shit.

He hasn’t helped himself with his demeanor but to be fair to him the DMN has been working overtime to throw shade on him. Much more so than the last election.
