How he fits at Texas: Brooks is a power back in the mold of Keaontay Ingram or Roschon Johnson. He has exceptional change of direction and short area quickness that he uses to manipulate defenders in order to help create creases and windows in the narrow spaces between the tackles. He has some size and power to him to blast through those holes. Brooks can also hit the edge and plant and go like a wide zone RB. He can flex out and run some routes and catch the ball. Essentially, he’s a perfect fit for being a volume back in the inside zone scheme that can flex out and execute the 11 personnel spread sets as well. – Ian Boyd

Looks like the kind of under the radar RB that Ok State turns into a 1,000 yd rusher. Hope he can develop in a similar fashion.

I concur.  Optimism from 6th Street.  You feeling OK?

Lol because city size correlates to talent. Thanks bud, enjoy your beanpole of a DE from NYC.

Also, how big for their britches has aggy gotten that fans of a team called the Aggies are running down kids from small rural towns.

(Mike Roach) Commitment analysis: What Texas gets in Jonathon Brooks

Quote

Jonathon Brooks, 2021 RB, Hallettsville (Texas)

Recruiting: Brooks committed Friday to Texas, which originally offered him in early November. That made the Longhorns the very first program to offer Brooks, who has also reported offers from Texas Tech, Colorado State, Texas State, UConn, ULL, and UTSA at the FBS level. Texas has led the 247Sports Crystal Ball for Brooks for the past several weeks leading to his announcement. Horns247.com insider Mike Roach submitted an initial Brooks-to-Texas forecast in late February.

Rankings: The industry-generated 247Sports Composite rates Brooks as a three-star recruit who is ranked No. 49 nationally among 2021 running back prospects. The 247Sports rankings consider Brooks a strong three-star with a grade of 86, which puts him at No. 45 nationally among 2021 running backs.

Stats: As a junior in 2019, Brooks ran for 1,310 yards and 24 touchdowns on 9.5 yards per carry, while catching 13 passes for 233 yards and one TD. He totaled more than 1,500 yards from scrimmage, while also returning kicks and punts. He averaged 24.9 yards on 12 kickoff returns and 25.2 yards on five punt returns. Hallettsville finished the season 11-3 with a Class 3A Division I state quarterfinal appearance.

Evaluation notes: Brooks is an intriguing sleeper back in the in-state 2021 class, which features a high number of talented running back prospects. Listed in the 6-foot, 185-pound range, Brooks owns above average height and frame space and should be able to gain a significant amount of good weight in a college strength and conditioning program. Brooks shows good initial burst and combines that encouraging explosion with impressive feel for the cutback. He's at his best when he can plant his foot and go.

Brooks displays promising, better-than-expected agility in the hole and in the open field, especially relative to his frame. His ability to make defenders miss in tight quarters is not a common trait for a back of his fairly long, lean build. Another encouraging characteristic is Brooks' ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He has shown promising hands-catching ability for a running back. Not only can he catch passes in the screen game and checkdowns, but he has also proven that he can make downfield grabs in the vertical passing game.

One area that stands out on film that Brooks will need to improve is his ball security. The ball is not always close to his body and tight, which will need to change against bigger-stronger-faster defenders. He can do a better job finishing his runs, especially for a taller back facing Texas Class 3A competition. Brooks possesses adequate speed but can improve  at the top end to provide more long-ball ability.

In some ways, Brooks is similar to former Carthage (Texas) High School four-star running back Keaontay Ingram at the high school level: the lanky build, the better-than-expected agility relative to that build, the pass-catching ability, the cutback feel. Brooks does not have the long-speed home run ball in his arsenal to the level that Ingram did during his high school days, but perhaps he can add that more often with improved quick-twitch athleticism. Brooks is a good back worth a take in a two-back class as a developmental player with encouraging physical traits and an instinctive running style that differentiates him from some of the other three-star backs in the state.

Yeah, those kids from small Texas towns suck. Steve McMichael never should have seen the field for the Horns. I'm sure there's a long list of small town players that did and are doing well.

Yeah, and that crappy QB from Tuscola a few years back, Colt something. Whatever became of him?

His cutting ability is definitely impressive, but I wonder about his top end speed (like everyone else). I definitely think his hands look elite for a running back.

It'd be interesting to see them motion him out now and then and maybe run some Lil'Jordan type plays with him. Obviously, he's not 6'5", but his agility makes me think he might be able to do some cool stuff in that kind of role.
