Do You Know Anyone Personally Who Was Murdered or a Murderer?

Back in high school my friends and I would play basketball at Pickwell Park in San Antonio. That place ain’t for the faint of heart, some games ended up with bottles being broken and lives being threatened. It was a tough neighborhood but a lot of good hardworking folks lived in the area. There was a kid that we went to school with that was 2 years younger than us that lived down the street. When the park was full we’d head over to his house to play in his driveway. He was a nice kid with normal hardworking parents but definitely lower middle class.

Fast forward to when I was 20 and he had just graduated from high school. He was trying to get into the Navy but was told he needed to lose some weight first. He was one of our offensive linemen on the football team. I would see him jog around the park occasionally working on his weight. He meanwhile got a job at a local Bill Millers. The story I heard was he made friends with some bad people there that were gang affiliated. They took him out one night and got him high as shit, put a gun in his hand and told him to shoot out the window at a house they had targeted because a rival member lived there. He ended up killing a 16 yr old girl at her birthday slumber party. Got life in jail. I never thought it would have happened to this guy.

Michael Dixon was a fraternity brother, he was a plastic surgeon in Amarillo. He was convicted of having his friend kill another doctor in Lubbock over an ex girlfriend. I knew Dixon and Shepard, the guy that did the killing. This story has been on several of the murder/mystery stations. Kind of crazy to know both of the guys involved in a murder for hire plot.  Both are in the pen for life.

I was good friends with Bart Whitaker in high school. White privilege got him off death row.

Always fascinated by this case. He’s always come across as a sociopath. His dad spent a lot of money to save him.

A kid that lived 2 doors down from me growing up did a murder/suicide about 20 years ago.   Took a local doctor with him and there were whispers of it being a gay relationship gone bad

Same kid's dad blew his brains out about 10 years before that

He also did pretty far out stuff like trying to derail a train and drowning kittens, etc, so it was the least surprising murder/suicide ever

About 7 years ago, a friend of mine (I was dating one of her friends at the time) was stabbed to death by her boyfriend in the kitchen of another friend of mine. They had only been dating a few months and he was the super jealous type, and obviously batshit crazy. They had been fighting that evening and when they got back to her friend's house, they continued fighting into the early hours and he just snapped and stabbed her.

She had been living with the guy in California and brought him home to Austin to meet her family and friends for the weekend. Some of her girlfriends had met him previously and knew right away there was something "off" about him. They had planned to take her to brunch the next day for an intervention of sorts. Unfortunately it was too late.

The guy fled the scene and was later caught by cops. He'd tried, unsuccessfully, to cut his own throat. In the trial, the piece of shit actually tried to claim self defense. He's in prison for life. She was a fun, sweet woman in her 30s. SWA flight attendant. Just chose the wrong guy.

Another one....Around 2000-2001 or so, a girl I worked with, early 20s, was killed by her husband in a murder-suicide in Cedar Park.

Becky was a patient of mine-she served nineteen years for killing the guy who raped her five year old daughter.  She was paroled with an ankle monitor and lasted a couple of years before violating some limitation and being sent back to finish her term.  Same story with Mike-he did more than twenty years for killing the guy who raped and murdered his wife, apparently with his bare hands.

Our criminal justice system is fucked up. Both of them should have received a medal.

The younger brother of a girl I hooked up with in HS ended up a few years later killing a girl he was dating. He was 18 at the time. Shot her in the back of the head at a canyon overlook while she was saying how much she loved him. She was a few years older than him and was pushing for them to get married. He obviously had some mental health issues. After be shot her, he realized what he had done and tried to pick her up. When it was clear she was dead, he took off in her car and went to his HS basketball game. The coach, a guy I used to play hoops with, saw the kid crying on a bench, holding the gun. He told the coach to take it before he uses it on himself.

The kid had stolen the gun he ending up using and had shown it to a friend in hopes he would get turned in.

Same here. I watched most of it from a parking lot at the corner of 21st & Whitis.

That was way close.  Didn't somebody get shot even further away than that?  Like near 19th Street?  As for me, all the neighborhood kids just watched the tower from in the middle of the street in the Shoalwood area once we heard the radio reports.  Amazing that the town was so small that you could have a clear view of the tower from there.  Seeing Austin featured on the Walter Cronkite show later that evening was mind bottling for a kid.

Visiting family in CA summer of 1984, went to Imperial beach and we stopped at McDonalds.   We were getting in the car when the gunman started shooting.  Dad started to go back in, mom went bat shit hysterical, so he drove a block away and found a pay phone to call police.

I remember that very well. It was the first time that I had seen a mass murder like that. It was horrifying.

One that I forgot, a older man that I used to work with had a son that got mixed up in drugs. His wife went to check on him one day and he shot and killed him. She was his step mom, but had basically raised him for most of his life. He barricaded himself in the house for a few hours before surrendering. I didn’t know her, but she was a very well known real estate agent in The Woodlands. My co-worker basically lost his wife and his son that day.

When I was 6 or 7, my mom bought a pair of lightly-used boots for me from a garage sale at a house a couple blocks away from where we lived.  Found out later that the boots had been worn some years prior by a kid who, when he was high school age, had snapped for some reason and killed a member of his own family.  (We didn't know the kid or his family.)
Your story reminded me that, for a while until I outgrew them, I wore his old boots.  No wonder my feet had the strange urge to stomp on other kids . . .

You were wearing boots that fit high school kids at 6? I thought I wore Clown shoes(size 13)

Well, you know what they say.  Big feet = other big appendages.

Nah, these were boots that the kid had owned about 10 years or so previously, i.e., when he was also a 6 or 7 year old.

Guy I went to school with shot a few horses in high school. About 5 years after graduation he was a truck driver and he killed his driving partner. It wasn't more than a year or so later he killed his girlfriend and her approximately 10 year old daughter. He told the girl to run then proceeded to shot her in the back with a rifle as she ran away. I haven't read this thread but I hope to hell no one else knew a bigger piece of shit murderer than this guy.

I met that doctor one time...Describing how would blow my cover even more than it already is, so I won't, but it was very cool, and an honor to meet him.

Okay, long story here, but I promise the payoff is worth it...

My mom was a wild child who got kicked out of Incarnate Word and St. Agnes and so attended San Jacinto HS and then finally Lamar, where she ran with a crew of little flower power hippies and beatniks. This was pre-Manson,  and they called themselves "the Family."

One member of the family was a handsome, brooding guitar-playing Jewish kid named Larry. Larry's parents were card-carrying Communists when he was growing up and so he was pretty much raised under FBI surveillance. He also was in fourth grade at Poe Elementary when that bomb went off and that fucked with his head pretty badly too. I've met about a half-dozen people who survived that horror and they are all deeply twisted each in their own ways.

Larry was kind of like this James Dean Bob Dylan combo who had his pick of all the girls who would have gone to PVA had it existed at the time...And he was way into acid first and then he got into speed and got really really strung out. Dropped out of college and disappeared and was pretty much written off for dead. Both my parents were friends with Larry's brother, a student radical at UH whose name escapes me now. When our family moved to NYC for a short spell circa 1971, my parents drove a van there and Larry's brother and girlfriend accompanied me, an infant at the time, on the plane up there.

So anyway, after a few years in the wind, Larry popped up in California and to everyone's surprise, was actually thriving. He'd blazed through undergrad and was charging through medical school. After LSD and speed, he'd found Jesus. Jesus and a benefactor, who saw promise in the young man and helped pay his way through med school.

And then when Larry completed med school that benefactor hired Larry as his organization's staff physician and he remained in that duty when the organization moved oversears.

To Guyana. The Benefactor was the Rev Jim Jones, and Dr. Larry Schacht was the camp physician at Jonestown. Dr. Larry devised the Guyana punch on Jones's orders and drank it down with the rest of them.

The day after it happened the phone was ringing off the hook at my mom's house in Nashville. The media had tracked her down somehow. She was no commenting for awhile and then stopped answering the phone at all and I couldn't understand why. I thought she was missing out on a shot at fame.

Completely forgot about this thread.

So, family and I were driving to TN at the end of June to see family.  Mom calls to let me know that my cousin, Traci, was murdered.  Coincidentally, we were on I-40, not too far from where her body was just found.  It was found in a container on a lake on the TN/KY border.  A couple of weeks later, the rest of the story came out...

My cousin was in her early 40's.  She had met some guy 60-ish and began filming porn threesomes with he and his wife.  He had a porn production company, but I can't remember what it was called.  At some point, he wasn't paying her, so she threatened to call his wife's employer and get her fired.  Eventually, she did.  Apparently, the dude's wife was an elementary school principal in Arlington.  Holy shit!  I guess this set him off, he killed my cousin, took her body to the lake in KY.

The guy was finally caught in Justin, TX yesterday after 12 years on the "run." Apparently his son and brother were taken into custody separately.  I presume the FBI thinks they were involved in his hiding

as a father of two young women, i cannot understand this, at all. a father killing his children because they dated someone not of a particular religion is beyond fucked up.

yea, i'm sure that's exactly what any righteous and just god would ask of his followers.

i hope he dies a slow miserable death. and fuck his kin for hiding him for this long. what a fucked up family.

Holy shit. Over in Justin. Wow.

I honestly assumed he'd never be caught at this point. Thanks for sharing.

A couple we used to hang out with some divorced about 18 months ago. Before it was final the husband was found with a gunshot wound to his head and his car burnt to a crisp. Like rims melted hot. In the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. He was from there originally and had been staying with his parents.

Over time I have become more and more certain the wife and/or her family had something to do with it. They have money and the wife went off her rocker. She’s a pet psychic or some shit now. She and her entire family (wife, two daughters, mom, dad, sister) happened to be at Disney World when he was killed. When they were notified they decided to finish the trip out before coming home.

She was hysterical at the funeral. Starting dating one month after that. Although the funeral was 6 weeks or so after his death because they were waiting on positive ID. His remains were that charred.

I’d love to know what happened to him. Nice guy. Last time my wife saw the psycho she said she stopped following up with the cops because if it’s meant to be solved it’ll happen.

Oh, and this is the kind of stuck up rich chick that doesn’t associate with the help but she helped throw her personal trainer a birthday party. She also promotes his short workout videos on Facebook. I watched one and it was filmed in their old house that she moved out of but hasn’t been able to sell.

Basically all the red flags you see on Dateline cases are there.

My cousin got killed by her crazy boyfriend in California a couple years ago. Then he ran off to the middle of nowhere in Colorado and was live streaming some emo shit on Facebook talking about how he was gonna kill himself. Of course he chickened out and the cops tracked him down using his location from his live streaming.

And my Dad's liver transplant surgeon that we got to know decently well over the years got killed by her husband in a murder-suicide in Houston.

I never knew any of these people, as they died before I was born.

My great grandma was shot 6 times by her first husband.  A family friend heard the shooting and came to the house.  He found her husband standing over her.  When the sheriff showed up the husband had apparently shot himself in the head.  And then put the gun in his pocket.

My great grandma survived.  She married the family friend and they had a son - my grandpa.  It became common knowledge that the family friend shot the husband and put the gun in the pocket.  So if true, my great grandpa may have been a murderer.

I'm surprised that there have been no connections with the murder of Tiffani Ann Bruce:

Tiffani was my best friend through high school and we were both living in Austin at the time of her murder. The Hard Copy episode on her killing did say that murderer was obsessed with the movie Portrait of a Serial Killer and I've carried that with me every time I see fascination/glorification of murderers. She was a wonderful person whose time was brutally cut short, more than just a lurid co-ed death tale.

I was six years old when our next door neighbor’s adult son, and his girlfriend, were both murdered at the family’s lake house.  Robbery gone wrong.

In fifth grade at Harry Withers elementary,  a girl I was sweet on stepped In front of her mom and took a bullet, during a domestic dispute. She survived.

I hope the father never got out of jail.

Like the old saying.......Such a terrible suicide...shot himself in the head 10 times with a lever action. Wanted to die so badly he even reloaded.
