I know this is difficult but the analogy wasn’t about Trump turning into Hitler.  It was about our society turning into one that would accept a monster to lead it to its own destruction.  You hold the keys to a platform of public discourse.  It might sound trivial but the decision to censor political content is a big deal at this moment in history. I can’t tell you what to do because it’s not my message board but the decisions you make do reflect your values.

What would we do without you Hugo

Maybe you should attempt this political discourse in the forum designated for it.  It's something we used to have in that forum.

And if you don't agree you should probably make it decent. EMAW was just neg bombed for stating an opinion. That seemed unnecessary, and not a great way to keep people in.

And what opinion is that? That he's persecuted for his vaguely-defined beliefs and that the people he's talking at are residents of a shit hole? Complete with a misattributed quote that's being used condescendingly?

Really sounds like he's just trying to have a dialogue, huh?

Probably not something to be neg bombed. I can see why turkleton (spelling?) had his rep destroyed.

Holy shit Hugo, this is a sports forum where many users found their way here because of cartoon dicks drawn by Thujone.

I’m aware of the absurdity of cartoon dicks bringing a community together to build a better world but here we are.

Few appreciate how these forums don’t have much competition when it comes to their audience reach and localization.  We are virtually having non-stop town hall discussions on a variety of topics, big and small.  You can argue this kind of democratization of discourse doesn’t have any meaningful influence on the outside world, but who knows?

I never thought of putting libertarian and Christian ideals in a pornhub comment section, but the thought is entertaining.

Yes, you did so much to change tiger droppings. So much that they banned you. Now you post in the echo chamber here where everyone supports everything you post from twitter.  Outside of the echo chamber nobody gives a fuck what you repost.

Lord of the Flies, the film, is a rather grotesque.

The CR Praetorian Guard strikes anything coming in fast and hot. Don't assume a monolithic viewpoint on all issues exists. Don't be defensive. Most are not part of the Praetorian Guard. Ignore is an extremely useful feature in the Cloak Room. It is a click - and poof - whatever gnat is bugging you - gone.

I use it in the DT as well. It has its own Praetorian Guard (small in number) and it has some unsurly hangeroners who just like to start shit. Again - hover, click - ignored.

Be kind. There are some kind folk on the other side of any political issue. And it's only politics.

And stop picking on the Oregon kid from Denton (Stew-Eating Country). He asks the right questions. That's a huge sign of intelligence. You might learn something from the Stew-Eater.

Postmodernism is a scourge on Civil Society. Don't give in to its indulgences.

Pretorian guard ?  That would infer some type of tenacity, military prowess.  Those boys are the archetypal bad ass, keyboard warriors with skimarked tighty whiteys.

Pretty much every forum I've ever been on a rant like that would end in a permanent banning. I try to listen to the posters here to help make this a better place and I guess that's bad?

Some of you people are completely insufferable and seem to be on the lookout for outrage.

To summarize how I feel about DT and the cloak room:

Discussion on topics in the DT should be news/current events related. Once it gets into partisan politics and bickering it will be moved or deleted.

below are examples of partisan politics/bickering which will result in bannings/moving of parts or entire threads.

  • Why do y’all argue with that meth headed fascist?
  • You are a dumbass
  • Bro do you even orange man bad?
  • List the virtues of Jesus Christ’s teachings that Donald Trump embodies....
  • Yeah says the party of civil war cosplayers when they can’t get their hair cut
  • Yeah, says the party of actually burning shit down.
  • Says the party that embraces white supremacists and turn a blind eye to their instigation

Thanks.

So we get banned if we call Hugo a dumbass?

Is it too on-point or is it like we only say "regarded"?

We do have a shitload of competition though - at this moment, at 2:40pm (God's Favored Time Zone) on June 14, 2020, there are 2,000 registered members actively browsing the Austin subreddit (and who knows how many who aren't logged in or members), which has over 170,000 subscribers.  That's an off-time as well, and that's just one reddit  - others have plenty of Austin/UT activity.  There are also other Longhorn forums/sites/whatever, and plenty of fans hang out elsewhere.  There's over 690,000 people who follow the UT Football Facebook page.

We are an extremely unique sports-focused community that is lucky enough to not have the mods/owners imposing their wills/viewpoints like say TexAgs, Hornsports, Hornfans, etc. and we are here because we didn't want to be a part of the shit-shows that a lot of the other UT-focused sites are.  Those other sites resemble far too closely our friends/relatives on Facebook.

People in Bumfuck, Texas aren't hopping on here and having their minds changed.  Hell, they don't even see the occasional banner that gets flown asking for some coach to be fired.

We're people who would hang out at a bar together, if we weren't so comfortable posting from our heated Japanese toilets that pump coconut water through the bidet, while wondering if we needed to fill up the fridge by the shower.

Hugo isn’t here to change minds

28,000+ posts say otherwise.  And the 10,000 on the old site say that as well.   If we assume that he spent 5 minutes or so (including reading the posts he's responding to, or reading the responses), that's a few thousand hours he's invested in this.   When you make that many posts, and when the majority are about a specific topic such as politics, you are heavily invested in something.

My math maybe wrong, it's been a long day, but he's potentially spent over 100 24-hour days of his life posting on shaggy/surly.   He is a Believer with a capital B.

The problem for him is twofold - speaking of the old site, we all up and left and moved to a new site at the drop of BL's hat.    We all just up and walked away from years of posting history, and that site could go down any day.  And a shitload of us had migrated from other platforms before that.   That lack of permanence does not make for a good platform to change hearts and minds.  This isn't usenet, where I have thousands of posts that are archived on various servers out there where I battled valiantly to defend Linux and OS/2 and DESQview and the Houston Astros and Houston Oilers.  It's more akin to the BBSes I used to post on, where they go down and the posts are lost somewhere on a now long-forgotten floppy disk being used to level a desk or something, and that community would sometime migrate to another BBS.  Well, I have a shitload of FidoNet posts that somehow made it onto the internet, much to my chagrin, but anyways, I'm drifting.

Which gets into the issue of the importance of the actual nuts-and-bolts platform made of software and hardware vs our little merry band of revelers being the actual platform, but that's getting kind of esoteric.

The bigger problem for Hugo is that this platform is known for cartoon dicks, lots of swearing, lots of photos of scantily clad women, lots of really off-color jokes and hot takes.  It's not going to reach the people that Hugo wants to, or rather can actually change the minds of.  The people that Hugo reaches here are, for the most part, pretty set in their views, or their views have been shaped by their real-life experiences and not somebody's posts on the internet.

Surprisingly, or maybe not, heavy/older internet users seem to trend towards the libertarian/independent side of things, which is not good for those with a message to spread, because we can laugh at Trump being unable to properly drink water as well as Uncle Joe smelling somebody's hair equally.  Not helped that we have an educated base as well, which makes it a little harder.

We have the occasional catalyst that brings a lot of differing viewpoints into the same thread - the subject of this thread, the covid thread, Tom Herman.  And we have a lot of stuff that helps fill the off-season or the times in-between games when we aren't in the mood to talk about football or basketball or baseball or whatever.

But I just don't see many changing their minds over internet opinions - it's going to be the video of a cop openly murdering somebody, or our football team being murdered or whatever.

Honestly I think he is here to promote discord not change minds. Look at what content he chooses to post and the threads he chooses to start. I believe his true intentions will become even more obvious when Biden is inaugurated

Oh it's not a notion. You follow Lobo, who you claim to ignore from thread to thread. You used to do that with Derka. Then it went to Drew. Then futureman. Rex Kramer did that on Surly. But yeah, you're totally not him. You just post exactly like him all the time.

I enjoy that Hugo annoys people because some of the people he annoys bring it upon themselves. A bunch of supposed adults lose their shit at the sight of him. If my posting style annoys you, well, that's just a bonus. You seem easily irritated which is very fitting.

Anyone who wasn't Rex Kramer would have just started ignoring all of the you are obviously Rex Kramer "allegations" like a year ago, but Rex being Rex, he's going to continue to address every single accusatory post with a denial that he's Rex, from now until whenever he (Dr.Beeper, aka Rex Kramer) stops posting and/or dies/is kidnapped and unable to access the internet.

also, re: "Derka literally posts everywhere", no, Rex, I don't. 80% or more of my posts are in the hoops forum, and most of the rest of my posts are spent on a select few Varisty threads. You just can't help yourself but to do your Rex thing all over the board because you're Rex, and that's all you know. Just stop denying it already, before I get Devin the Dude to come give you some counseling.

It is funny to me how one liberal poster after another has come to this thread and in different ways said the same thing, that Trump is so bad we need to be able to discuss politics everywhere and especially DT, as if people didn't already know that.

TDS is real. Its sufferers can't help themselves. They'll find a way to blame Trump and Putin if they get plain instead of spicy ketchup at Whataburger. I say this because I was like that a few years ago. I learned to let it go...Took plenty of Zen and abstinence from alcohol -- both of those practices are in short supply around these parts.
