I negged you for falling for his stupid fucking bait and continuing his ridiculous discussion. Your response had fuckall to do with the topic of this thread and and is 100% political in nature.

What the fuck does citing the number of black deaths at the hands of police have to do with politics?  You serious??  I pointed out that 236 blacks were killed by cops in 2019, not 10, and that is literally all I said.

I have zero interest in engaging the troll, but I do think it is a remarkably interesting turning point in the American experience that so many conservatives are expressing anger and disgust with abuses of police power over the last several days, whether he recognizes it or not. Lindsey Graham's comments about the work his Senate committee is about to undertake are apparently liberal folderol. Go figure.

Anyway, yeah, anyone deriding Eagles for taking a stand is kind of missing the whole point of declaring independence from England. Right or wrong on the issue at hand, Eagles is continuing one of this country's best traditions. Good for him. Hope it works out like he wants it to do.

I thought NFL Europe folded?

I believe 10 references “unarmed” victims.

The news reports on this read a little differently:

FORT WORTH -- A 31-year-old man fatally shot by police early Friday after officials say he swung a metal rod at officers has been identified as Joey Ellis. The shooting occurred shortly after 3 a.m. after officers were called to a disturbance at the Great Western Inn in the 1800 block of Lancaster Avenue. There, police said, Ellis told officers he had broken windows to several vehicles because the manager would not give him a room for free. Ellis was being escorted to a patrol car for further investigation when he broke free and attempted to run, said Lt. Abdul Pridgen, police spokesman. Pridgen said officers attempted to subdue Ellis using a Taser and a baton, but the man continued to resist arrest, picking up a cinder block as if he was going to hurl it one officer and later trying to remove an officer's gun from its holster. Pridgen said the man had picked up a metal rod and was swinging it in a threatening manner at the officers when he was shot by officers E. Pate, 34, and M.E. Anderson, 26.

Not sure what the final report was...still, wonder why they never seem to get shot in the leg to get them down.

No cop has ever, in the history of cops, been trained to shoot someone in the leg.

I don't know truth of the statements above, but if substantially true, deadly force would have been justified by Texas law.

Gotta say, if me and a buddy are both holding pistols and the best the other guy can come up with is a metal bar or a cinder block, I bet I can get him to drop said block / bar without unloading a full clip into his body.

Yep, cops go straight to brute force, no deescalation tactics whatsoever. They ain't got time for that. Anyone with a mental issue is gonna get shot. Social workers and police negotiators should make up half the police force, they can talk the amped up and mentally unstable down off the ledge. The biggest problem with police is the lack of empathy.

This is gonna sound bad because it means the lives of 4 human beings (ironically including a black officer who was in on the intial arrest of Floyd) will be trashed, but at this point i hope the charges against the officers stick..for the safety and sanity of this country.

I've seen a criminal trial lawyer on another forum give detailed reasons (with citations anyone can look up for themselves) why he believes they all walk with basically a slap on the wrist. We all know what that means if true..

Didn’t even have to read more than one post to figure that the appropriate response to the last 2ish pages should be - “Take this shit to the mother fucking cloak room.”.

Agree 100%. We're here to get AWAY from that stuff.  And that doesn't mean that we care any less.

Keith Ellison (Minnesota AG) basically laid it out when he said anyone who thinks this is a slam dunk don't know shit about the law. He was more diplomatic than that, of course, but just "knowing" they are guilty is not the same thing as meeting the necessary legal threshold of evidence.

God help us all if he can't get it done.

We get it; bad things happen to everyone.  I think Tom said it best, as a white guy (or in my case Mexican), if we make an illegal u-turn our biggest fear is the size of the ticket.  Brennan has much more to worry about.

Here's the thing:  either the now banned Soldierhorn was lying, or he was listening to a jingoistic, right-wing station that simply pulls crap out of their ass because no such incident occurred.  It's a fabrication.  Sorry for the political reply.  I support Brennan Eagles.

The video should make it a slam dunk. The fact it doesn't is representative of just how fucked up this country's C.J. system is in reality. The cops are the tip of the iceberg but the entire system is corrupted. I wish Brennan well but he also needs to do what's best for himself too.

Good, fuck those killers. It’s why the 3rd degree murder charge was genius, it places less importance on the officers intent and more on his reckless actions. Much higher probability of conviction that way.

Pretty sure it was bumped up to 2nd degree now, which actually makes a little more sense IMO.

But this is fucked. I hope he understands the decision he’s making...

Not when the truth is he violated citizen's civil and basic human rights. Nope, I'm confident no cop has ever told the truth in that instance.

Telling the truth is easy when the truth gets you a positive outcome.

Nobody made you click on the thread and read until page 4. If mods want to move the topic to CR that’s fine but you knew what you were clicking on.

I'm all for talk about Brennan Eagles' post and how it affects him, the Longhorns and college football in general. One of the reasons the Surly Football thread is great is because it's about...football. There are plenty of other places and ways to get involved in the bigger discussions. As I stated earlier, I am proud of my efforts to help our minority community, as my communications platform reaches over 100,000 people in Central Texas and beyond.  But I love Surly Football for what it is.

This.

But I don't think it will work out the way he wants without the platform. I have a hard time imagining we will keep him on scholarship to not play - if only because we can't do that for all the players who would want to follow suit (and you better believe the dominoes will fall). There have got to be alternatives where his voice will actually be amplified rather than snuffed out as he falls into obscurity for his remaining time at Texas.

The players should look at Acho right now - he's a pretty big voice out there now and without football he would never have gotten there. He's a great model for these guys to follow.

It may surprise you that a black man can actually make a difference in the world without being a sports star. If he’s passionate enough to turn down this football opportunity and devote his life to a cause which is obviously important to him, there may not be a ceiling for what he can achieve.

I don’t watch the NFL and wouldn’t have known who Pat Tillman was if not for his jaw dropping decision. Maybe Brennan becomes a leader for the black people of America and people listen because of the sacrifice he made. Besides, many people make it quite clear they don’t want to hear the opinion of a professional athlete.

Look, I’m absolutely for a change in police tactics but asking police to aim for the leg is absurd, in my opinion. Have you ever shot a pistol? It’s difficult to hit a small stationary target, while standing still, with controlled breathing, and no lives at stake. Asking someone to aim for a person’s leg to stop them from harming someone else is like asking a pitcher to throw a strike on a home plate which is constantly changing positions.

We have to change the mindset of cops and hold them accountable when they abuse their position. That alone would solve many of the problems we see.

While I applaud him for taking a stand, very few people will ever hear of him again until he gets back on the field. His best bet is to work his ass off, make it to the NFL and join other NFL players who are speaking out. He may get a few players to sit out the season with him but there will be someone else ready to step in and take their places. The only way I see him making a difference at UT is if he gets Sam to sit out with him. No offense to the other players, but Sam is the only player on this team that people would stand up and take notice of if he took a stand. And no it's not because he's white, if VY was playing this season it would be the same situation. Just not much star power on this team.

Yep.  The marginal difference between Sam and his backup is the Grand Canyon between Eagles and his.

How many unarmed? The answer is closer to 10 than 236. Isn't it what this whole thing is about? 10 is 10 too many and we can agree on that.

I have no idea. #12 is retired and belongs to Colt McCoy. This is what I said originally. Use your platform as much as you want, actually have something to say.

If 12 is retired then he has to be referencing 12 teammates. I read all the comments to his tweet and it didn’t shed any light.

Yes, another poster pointed out that was what he probably meant [which wasn't what the banned fool stated -- he just said "How many black people were killed by police in 2019?"].
