Bob Seger

OK, a musician who is rarely discussed, and pretty polarizing, but I really like him.  Just listened to “Turn the Page” and that is a fantastic song.  So are a ton of his songs.  I think he may be in the most underrated category.  Agree or disagree?

He's too popular to be underrated on one hand, but he probably hasn't gotten his critical due.

If you don't love this song, you're wrong.  The fact that I've never seen a really good modern artist cover Seger tells me that he probably still isn't getting his due.

Underrated.  He was great in concert back in the 80's.

OK, agreed he’s pretty popular, but yes, he doesn’t get the credit he should.  He’s a pioneer, and a hell of a musician and songwriter.

He played good, honest rock 'n roll. No shame in his game.

My favorite Seger lick comes from Night Moves.

"I used her/She used me/Neither one cared/We were gettin' our share"

Straight & to the point. And I know exactly how that moment feels. Even moreao as those teenage years fade away in the distance.

Night Moves classic lines are:

woke last night to the sound of thunder

how far off? I sat and wondered

started humming a song from 1962

ain't it funny how the might moves?

Brilliant and haunting lyrics

And the secrets that we shared
The mountains that we moved
Caught like a wildfire out of control
Till there was nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove
And I remember what she said to me
How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me oh so tight
Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then

Seger is a gotdammned American treasure.

As great as the lyrics are throughout the entire song, my favorite part has always been the ending, "I remember, I remember, I remember, I remember!"

The years add up in a hurry, and many memories fade just as fast, but some stay so fresh and vivid, their immediacy fucks with your mind. All you can do is howl in frustration: I remember, I remember, I remember, I remember!

There might be better songs, but there aren't many better written than "Night Moves."

Played along with night moves from the greatest hits record tonight just because of this thread. Not to music nerd this up, but I think one reason this part evokes so much emotion from the listener is that he switches to a g/cmaj7 progression here (instead of g/f/c major from the verses). It’s such a simple, subtle but fucking brilliant move and it never would have occurred to me in a million fuckin years, but that’s what I do what I do and he’s Bob Seger. If, when you hear that part, you are hit with a waves of nostalgia, sadness, reflection, and stillness, like you just woke up to the sound of a distant storm, it’s partly that cmaj7 chord doing its magic. It’s amazing how a few notes on the guitar can do that.

I can't think of a more nostalgic songwriter.  That guy was mourning his high school days when he was still in high school.

Personally, I think "Against The Wind" is his masterpiece, and "Night Moves" is just laughably bad.  "Points of her own sitting way up high".  Come on.  Feels like someone's pervy uncle leering at a (wait for it) high school chick.

But, one misstep does not ruin the catalog.  Dude could write some songs, that's for sure.

A gypsy wind is blowing warm tonight
The sky is starlit and the time is right
And still you're tellin' me you have to go
Before you leave there's something you should know
Yeah something you should know babe

I've seen you smiling in the summer sun
I've seen your long hair flying when you run
I've rnade my mind up that it's meant to be
Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me

Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me
Out where the rivers meet the sounding sea
You're high above me now, you're wild and free ah but
Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me
Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me

Some people say that love's a losin' game
You start with fire but you lose the flame
The ashes smolder but the warmth's soon gone
You end up cold and lonely on your own

I'll take my chances babe I'll risk it all
I'll win your love or I'll take the fall
I've made my mind up girl it's meant to be
Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me
Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me

It's written down some where, it's not to be
You're high above me flyin' wild and free
Oh but someday lady you'll accomp'ny me
Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me

Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me
Out where the rivers meet the sounding sea
I feel it in my soul, it's meant to be
Oh someday lady you'll accomp'ny me
Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me

Get out of Denver is the best driving through the desert song of all time.  To wit:

I still remember it was autumn and the moon was shinin'
Our 60 Cadillac was roarin' through Nebraska whinin'
Doin' 120 man the fields was bendin' over
Headin' out for the mountains knowin' we was traveling further
All our fires were blazing and the spinnin' wheels were turnin' turnin'
Had my girl beside me brother.
Brother she was burnin' burnin'

Up walked a Baptist preachin' southern funky school teacher
She had a line on somethin' heavy but we couldn't reach her
We told her that we needed somethin' that would get us goin'
She pulled out all she had and laid it on the counter showin'
All I had to do was lay my money down and pick it up
The cops came bustin' in and then we lit out in our pickup truck go

Get out of Denver better go go
Get out of Denver better go
Get out of Denver better go go
Get out of Denver cause you look just like a commie
And you might just be a member better
Better Get out of Denver
Better Get out of Denver

Well red lights were flashin' and the sirens were a-screamin'
We had to pinch each other just to see if we was dreamin'
Made it to Loveland Pass in under less than half an hour
Lord it started drizzlin' and it turned into a thundershower

The rain was drivin' but the Caddy kept on burnin' rubber
We kept on drivin' till we ran into some fog cover
We couldn't see a thing somehow we just kept on goin'
We kept on drivin' all night long and then into the mornin'fog.
It finally lifted when we looked to see where we was at
We're starin' at a Colorado state policeman trooper cat

And go Get out of Denver he said go go
Get out of Denver better go
Get out of Denver better go go
Get out of Denver cause you look just like a commie
And you might just be a member
Better get out of Denver
Better get out of Denver better go

Oh better better better go
Hey go
Ah better better go go go go
Cause you look just like a commie
And you might just be a member better
Get out of Denver better go!

I am not much of a Metallica fan, but I like their version of “Turn the Page”.  Bob’s is very lonely and haunting, as it was intended, it seems. Metallica’s version is completely different-quite angry. I like to listen to it when I’m blowing off steam.

I don't think I saw it up thread yet, but how can nobody have posted "You'll Accompany Me."  I use to roll my eyes when somebody would request him on my radio show (this was 1991-93, so Seger was much more played than he is now) but as I've gotten older and gotten deeper into his albums, he really is a very talented and underrated songwriter.

sorry for cheesy video, but it's best audio quality I could find on a quick search:

Don't listen to Metallica but caught that cover in the Cover thread on this forum, thought it was great.  It sort of reminds me of the scene in The Jazz Singer where Love on the Rocks is played differently than what Neil envisioned.

Yeah, but you didn't label it up top so I just skimmed it assuming it was a sonnet you wrote to sbBruin

+rep for beating me to it.  It his best song.

Now then, songs you have gotten a lap dance to by Bob Seger???  He's got one deceptively good track for a proper lap dance (and it's a longer song, which is nice).

‘Roll Me Away’ at the end of Mask is great.

That’s when I fell in love with that song.

Film trivia:  The filmmaker wanted to use Springsteen songs for the entire movie, but the rights were too expensive, so he settled on Seger.

Edit: Oh, and Mask is ridiculously underrated. Cher and Sam Elliot were fantastic in that movie.

You are wrong and should look in the mirror and feel bad about yourself.

I woke last night to the sound of thunder / How far off I sat and wondered / Started hummin’ a song from 1962 / Ain’t it funny how the night moves / When you just don’t seem to have as much to lose / Strange how the night moves / With autum closin’ in

That part gives me chills.

That part is good.  The part about some young girl's tits is shameful.

Mask is a really, really good film. But the soundtrack controversy is a little more complex.

Director Peter Bogdanovich originally used several Springsteen songs because he was Rocky's favorite artist. In the movie when Rocky cranks up the boombox in his room you see the Springsteen cassettes and posters on the wall. Bogdanovich has long used on camera points of music for his films' soundtracks.

Bogdanovich turned in his final cut with the four Springsteen tunes (Thunder Road, Badlands, The Promised Land and Born in the USA). He found out a few weeks later that his studio (Universal) rejected the $200K that Walter Yetnikoff (president of CBS/Columbia, Springsteen's label) demanded for the licensing. Additionally, Yetnikoff was demanding a percentage of the revenue generated by videotape sales/rentals down the road, which was a huge deal at the time. CBS even offered use of the Springsteen songs for theatrical release (if Universal met their price), but would not allow them to be used in VHS tapes of the movie.

Bogdanovich was pissed & after submitting a second cut with the Seeger tracks, he sued Universal for millions claiming his right for final cut had been violated. When Springsteen heard about the mess later he was pissed & let Yetnikoff & the lawyers know about it. He made sure that Bogdanovich got the songs to use for his director's cut version (you can find it on Netflix). And the Springsteen songs are truer to the film in all of the scenes EXCEPT the closing scene/end credits. "Roll Me Away" is the perfect ending to the film. In the director's cut Bogdanovich used "Born in the USA" which doesn't fit one bit and is so glaringly out of touch with that scene it makes me cringe.

Took a look down a westbound road
Right away I made my choice
Headed out to my big two-wheeler
I was tired of my own voice

Took a bead on the northern plains
And just rolled that power on
Twelve hours out of Mackinac City
Stopped in a bar to have a brew
Met a girl and we had a few drinks
And I told her what I'd decided to do
She looked out the window a long long moment
Then she looked into my eyes
She didn't have to say a thing
I knew what she was thinkin'

Roll, roll me away
Won't you roll me away tonight
I too am lost, I feel double-crossed
And I'm sick of what's wrong and what's right
We never even said a word
We just walked out and got on that bike
And we rolled
And we rolled clean out of sight
We rolled across the high plains
Deep into the mountains
Felt so good to me
Finally feelin' free

Somewhere along a high road
The air began to turn cold
She said she missed her home
I headed on alone
Stood alone on a mountain top
Starin' out at the Great Divide
I could go east, I could go west
It was all up to me to decide
Just then I saw a young hawk flyin'
And my soul began to rise
And pretty soon
My heart was singin'

Roll, roll me away
I'm gonna roll me away tonight
Gotta keep rollin', gotta keep ridin'
Keep searchin' till I find what's right
And as the sunset faded I spoke
To the faintest first starlight
And I said next time
Next time
We'll get it right

If you don't like this song, well, you suck.

It was also the end credits to a movie called Reckless with Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah.  Can't find a link. Found this live version.

And for the record, I have yet to see anyone analyze the actual lyric prior to the tits line correctly.

"Tight pants, points, hardly renowned".

He's not talking about his dick.  Even the analyses that correctly get that right miss the inference.  He's saying he wears the tight pants and "points" (steel tips on collars or boots) of the day, but he was still an outsider.

That's a much better line.
