COVID-19 2nd wave - Texas only - Stats and such

Mask report from last week.

Texas City Buc-ees 80%

The Big Store on Bolivar 50%

29.2 Surf Shop on Bolivar 0% (I was the only person in there with a mask on).

Restaurants were predictably lax, but that's everywhere as far as I can tell.

With the Galveston County closing beaches we left on Friday.  Before we left we drove down (Crystal Beach area) and noticed that they were not really enforcing the beach ban but crowds were a FRACTION of what they would have been.

Texas mask order won't be enforced by law enforcement in these places

Some elected law enforcement officials worry about lawsuits. Others have said their offices are too busy. Almost all of them that are looking the other way say they believe Texas Governor Greg Abbott has overstepped his bounds.

They're part of a growing number of agencies that are choosing to look the other way when citizens aren't wearing face coverings as ordered by Abbott earlier this week.

Adler is now publicly asking Abbott for more local control, for a shutdown, and says the ICUs will be full in 10-14 days.  At this point, Abbott may be more than happy to let the cities do their own thing.

Then you have these law enforcement guys telling Abbott to fuck off, and Abbott either has to exert his authority (as he did over the cities in May), or risk having this thing continue to spread and the hospitals to fill up.

I've been out of town for a week (BTW, the Seattle airport was a shit show last Thursday. Bergstrom was much better in terms of crowds and the percentage of people wearing masks.). Can y'all give me a rundown on how Austin and Texas have been doing this past week and how the prospects are for next week? Considering how the airports were this past week, I expect overall fail for the US. Heavy travel and resort patrons not wearing masks will cause further spread. I thought airplanes were pretty bad too as people weren't wearing masks for a good percentage of the flight as they ate and drank, a decent percentage of patrons using bandanas or not covering their noses, and all kids under 5 not wearing masks.

Not sure about Austin but Houston has been slowly declining since the mid-June peak (6/19-6/24).  Seems to be spreading to smaller counties, though, which is pushing the state-wide numbers up.

Was out jogging this morning, and saw three guys get out to play tennis at our neighborhood park.  No masks, all in close quarters to each other, etc.  I guess they played for a little while, but when I came back by, the three of them were clustered together, like 2 feet apart, still no masks, and bitching while a Parks and Rec employee was taking the tennis nets down.

Talk about a helluva lack of self-awareness.  What they were doing was exactly why we are having to close down a lot of stuff.

So what are thoughts behind Houston's more positive updates as of late?  Do we think people there started taking it more seriously before the rest of the State since numbers in Houston seemed to start peaking a week or so before everywhere else? Is there currently adequate testing in place or could lack of tests/delayed results be masking the actual positvity rate?  We touched on this some, but I'm a little concerned that's about to start happening in Dallas given the publicity over long testing lines and long backlog.

Austin has been declining/ staying steady in cases since the peak. I do believe hospitalizations have risen though. We currently have 446 patients in local hospitals with 137 in icu.

I’d put outdoor tennis, with or without masks, near the bottom for risk

Maybe all 3 were loud moaners

For the record, while it feels like Austin would do a shutdown if Abbott allowed it, I put it at about 75% we won't be getting another shutdown, because there are no more stimulus checks/whatever coming out of DC.   It's a lot easier to stomach if you know that at least some people and businesses will be getting additional help.

Same with golf, although in the case I saw this morning, these guys were breathing hard and within a few feet of each other.  Then again, maybe they are roommates.

But if they close down some park amenities and facilities, they pretty much have to close them all, or you get the Karens out bitching that golfers and tennis players get to do their thing, while they can't work with their personal trainers in the parks or let their kids run around on the playscape.

Given the many sources / moving parts of reporting, testing, etc....I don't know how anyone can confidently know.  My gut is that it's a combination of people taking this more seriously and the virus spread just working its way through the community.

It’s not rising and new daily cases are lower than the two day peak we saw a week ago. It’s been 7 days with no daily cases higher than we saw at the 2 day peak.

Not significantly lower but still lower.
It's lower because we had two days under 300 cases which were obviously lag, lack of tests or some other technical blip. We have the highest positive test percentage on Earth. Hospitalizations have increased by 600% in 3 weeks and still ticking up. There is no way we are actually on a downslope yet. Although I'm hoping we will be soon with the new regulations.

Ah ok, I get what you're looking at now.  I just don't trust the most recent data in that chart as being indicative of much with testing and reporting delays being what they are now.  For all we know we could have a huge catch up day on Tuesday and the trend would be wrecked.  If we make it to the end of the week and the trend line on new cases is still pointing down, I'll probably be more hopeful we're on the right track.

I'm really hoping the hospitalization rates start to level off more than anything.

no line this morning at the urgent care near my work. 2 cars in their covid testing stalls.  first time in about 2 weeks. went from 20 to 10 to 5 to 2.  might just be the holiday though.

what point is there of getting tested if the results don't come back for 10-14 days and there is no contact tracing done for positives?

My guess is it’s a testing issue but I haven’t really followed Houston’s numbers. We are definitely seeing that problem in Corpus. It’s still probably too early even for Houston to see positive returns correlating to behavior changes. And now with the unfortunate timing of the holiday weekend I’m thinking we won’t know much until mid July.

Two views of Houston. New cases (greater Houston) look to be plateauing or dropping. But hospitalizations (Texas Med Center only) are up. If cases hopefully have plateaued or dropping, I assume the hospitalization could continue to grow for another week or so before we see a drop.

Along those lines Nueces was WAY down yesterday to 203. Sunday, holiday weekend, and out of county tests. About 10 days ago that would have been a record high. Hospitalizations up 16 and ICU up 3. Overall a good day. Hospital numbers probably start getting ugly sometime this week.

It's probably best to look at 7 day average to get any kind of sense about what is going on.  Even then, there is such a lag between testing, results and reporting that who knows how accurate any of this is. Still, I find this chart for Bexar County informative. There are such wild swings in the data from day to day -- 1268 cases on 6/30,  439 on 7/1, 1334 cases 7/3 and 198 7/5 -- I'm not sure how you make sense of any daily reporting.

I’ll be very happy if the cases are truly plateauing or dropping. Lord knows we need it, but the combination of seeing certain counties report decreased tests available, longer lag time to get results, plus a holiday weekend potentially causing under-reporting gives reason for skepticism over the lower numbers. It will probably take a week or two to actually know if cases are dropping or if this is just a temporary decrease in cases reported due to those factors. Hopefully that first chart of daily growth in cases continues trending down.

fair point. we also might have a drop in testing because people wanted to enjoy the weekend. "I have a cough and fever, but I will wait until Monday to get tested"

I follow MN and ND daily and both had weird reporting for tests vs the last month or so. And MN had an uncharacteristic high positive % of 7.9 or somethin vs the normal 2.5-4

I’d take today’s numbers with a grain of salt

Was out jogging this morning, and saw three guys get out to play tennis at our neighborhood park.  No masks, all in close quarters to each other, etc.  I guess they played for a little while, but when I came back by, the three of them were clustered together, like 2 feet apart, still no masks, and bitching while a Parks and Rec employee was taking the tennis nets down.

Talk about a helluva lack of self-awareness.  What they were doing was exactly why we are having to close down a lot of stuff.

If 3 people playing tennis without a mask got you riled up, its a good thing you didnt go to Canton Trade Days this past weekend lol

what point is there of getting tested if the results don't come back for 10-14 days and there is no contact tracing done for positives?

I actually went to the urgent care to ask them and the people taking the swabs said it was 4-5 days to get results.

Didn't really rile me up (last week before the mask order, the park was loaded with kids and parents not social distancing or wearing a mask and that was...irritating), but it was just damned ironic that they were bitching about the nets begin taken down, while they were engaging in the very behavior that led to said nets being taken down.

Well, I finally got a couple of cheapo surgical masks to replace our bandana masks.

It is much easier to breathe through those masks than the double-thickness bandanas.

Doesn't seem like they cover a whole lot better either.  Maybe around the nose.

Could it be that a bandana is a more effective mask?

I'll try to spoiler this so I don't longcat the thread, but I made a spreadsheet showing infections and infection rates by county through this morning.  It was not a comparison I had seen done on this thread so far:

  Hide contents

County Cases Fatalities County Population Infection Rate

El Paso 6,953 135 182,439 3.81%

Galveston 3,990 46 339,241 1.18%

Dallas 24,778 395 2,650,320 0.93%

Travis 11,131 2,637 1,260,620 0.88%

Harris 35,913 400 4,714,391 0.76%

Texas Total 195,239 0 28,901,062 0.68%

So Travis County has 25% the population of Harris County but 6+ times the number of fatalities?

Something's not lining up with that graph.  2,637 is Texas' total.

Travis' death count is at 136

doubt it.  what kind of seal is your double bandana providing?

In my anecdotal view, I think it's just that bandanas are more restrictive to air passing through them, while the masks are (theoretically, at least) easier to breath with and do a good/better job filtering out some droplets. I definitely fuck with a purpose-made mask less on my face than I did with a bandana though, and that adds up too.

A Dr can answer better than I can...but from my stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night...it appears the humidity you create with “any” cloth mask on your face helps you to not spread it.

Also...there is a Longhorn owned store in ATX that sells some cheap nice masks. $9.95 for two. I can’t count how many I’ve given away to family and friends that ask about them when they see one. I bought more last week. I get the ones labeled “Pom.”

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/research-identified-most-least-effective-132900374.html

So, what are the best face masks for COVID-19?

This is how the study breaks face masks down by effectiveness, from most to least effective:

  • A stitched mask made from quilting cotton

  • A cone mask

  • A folded handkerchief

  • A bandana

Dallas is +1,214 cases and 6 deaths.    They don't share detailed hospitalization data until tomorrow (and the Friday data is always better) but the screen shots of the trend lines for "suspected COVID" hospital admits, ICU and ER visits is not good.

As parents nationwide wonder if it's safe to send kids back to day care, Texas is grappling with a surge of Covid-19 cases from child care centers.

At least 1,335 people have tested positive from child care facilities in Texas, the state's Department of Health and Human Services reported Monday, citing figures from Friday.

Quote

Of those infected, 894 were staff members and 441 were children. The cases came from 883 child care facilities that are open in the state, DHHS said.

The new cases mark a significant increase from June 15, when there were 210 reported cases from 177 facilities -- including 141 staff members and 69 children.

The exact same thing will occur when school returns in the fall. Teachers and staff will get sick. Kids will be carriers and bring it home with them just like they do with norovirus, the Flu, and stomach bugs. It will come down to people being okay with doing that and realizing you cannot send your kids to school if you have people at home who are in the danger categories if they get Covid. Teachers who might be in the same zone will not be teaching kids. Or we're all having in-home learning again this fall.
