Singer Shuts Down Aggies in Opener

WHAT HAPPENED:
Quote

Brady Singer recorded the first complete-game shutout of his career and led No. 1 Florida to a 9-0 win at No. 18 Texas A&M on Friday night.

JJ Schwarz provided the offense with a four-hit, four-RBI night that included a triple and a double. Deacon Liput and Blake Reese had three hits apiece and the Gators scored seven runs with two outs as they recorded their fifth shutout of the season.

Singer improved to 10-1 on the season, allowing six hits over nine innings with five strikeouts. Over his last six starts, Singer is 5-0 with a 1.71 earned run average in 42 innings.

The Gators jumped out to a quick start with back-to-back hits to lead off the game. Liput doubled into the right field corner and Nelson Maldonado singled to put runners on the corners.

An infield single from Schwarz put Florida ahead 1-0 early before the starting pitchers settled in.

Texas A&M starter Mitchell Kilkenny was solid until the sixth when the Gators knocked him from the game with a two-out rally.

Wil Dalton singled to center and Schwarz tripled into the right field corner for his second RBI of the night. A RBI single from Austin Langworthy brought home another run to make it 3-0.

The bottom of the order added to the total with a double from Reese and RBI single from Keenan Bell pushed the lead to five.

Reese picked up his third hit of the night with a RBI single in the eighth inning and a sac fly from freshman Brady Smith made it 7-0.

Schwarz's two-run double in the ninth provided the final margin.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Brady Singer – With 5 strikeouts on the night, Singer now had (253) career punchouts. He passed A.J. Puk (251) and moved into seventh place on the all-time UF strikeouts list. Brad Wilkerson is sixth all time with 292 strikeouts.

FROM THE COACH: Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan on today's game: "There was a lot of positives in tonight's game. Blake had three hits, JJ had four hits, Deacon Liput got us off to a good start and had three hits. We had some really competitive at bats the whole night, we got their starter's pitch count up. He was throwing the ball really well. And we played great defense.

"Obviously the story of the night was Brady on the mound. You just don't see a complete game shutout on the road in this league, especially on a Friday night. He was really, really impressive. He was really good tonight.

"Going back to the offense, we had I think nine two-strike hits tonight. We had the four-run sixth inning where we had two outs, nobody on. It was just a really nice game all around. Brady was phenomenal and offensively we were really good tonight."

UP NEXT: Florida continues its series at No. 18 Texas A&M Saturday at 5 p.m. (ET). The game will air on SEC Network. Sunday's finale will be on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. (ET).
