I'm still trying to figure out this Vanilla Ice performing in Austin angle - him canceling it may have temporarily set back the apocalypse.

I'm still thinking that Joe Exotic is going to come into play somehow. Not sure how just yet, maybe it's tied into Vanilla Ice.

But wait, there's more.

If you think 2020 sucks, just know that bubonic plague is waiting for someone to eat bush meat and get on a bus.

Quote

As if the novel coronavirus isn’t enough to worry about, a disease that caused the Black Death and killed some 50 million people in the 14th century has raised its ugly head again, according to a report.

Officials in China are on high alert after a case of bubonic plague was discovered in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, the BBC reported.

A herdsman in the city of Bayannur — about 560 miles northwest of Beijing — is in stable condition under quarantine, while a second suspected case involving a 15-year-old is being investigated, according to the outlet, which cited local media.

It is unclear how or why the herdsman might have become infected, according to the BBC, which reported that the teen had apparently been in contact with a marmot hunted by a dog.

Authorities have imposed a Level 3 alert until the end of the year. It forbids the hunting and eating of animals that could carry the plague and calls on people to report suspected cases.

Even though the bubonic plague, which is caused by a bacterial infection, was once the most feared diseases on Earth, it can now be easily treated with antibiotics.

It was responsible for the Black Death, which killed about 50 million people across Africa, Asia and Europe during the 14th century.

But there have been several large outbreaks since. It killed about a fifth of London’s population during the Great Plague of 1665, while more than 12 million died of the disease during the 19th century in China and India.

In 2017, an outbreak in Madagascar saw more than 300 cases, though a study in medical journal The Lancet found less than 30 people died.

In May 2019, two people in Mongolia died from the plague, which they contracted after eating the raw meat of a marmot, the same type of rodent the 15-year-old came into contact with.

Left untreated, the bubonic plague, which is typically transmitted from animals to humans by fleas, has a fatality rate of 30 percent to 60 percent, according to the BBC.

Symptoms include high fever, chills, nausea, weakness and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit or groin.

On the plus side, it’s unlikely any cases will lead to an epidemic.

“Unlike in the 14th century, we now have an understanding of how this disease is transmitted,” Dr. Shanti Kappagoda, an infectious diseases doctor at Stanford Health Care, told news site Heathline, the BBC reported.

“We know how to prevent it. We are also able to treat patients who are infected with effective antibiotics,” Kappagoda added.

Hundreds of elephants found dead in Botswana

Dr Niall McCann said colleagues in the southern African country had spotted more than 350 elephant carcasses in the Okavango Delta since the start of May.

No one knows why the animals are dying, with lab results on samples still weeks away, according to the government.

Botswana is home to a third of Africa's declining elephant population.

Dr McCann, of the UK-based charity National Park Rescue, told the BBC local conservationists first alerted the government in early May, after they undertook a flight over the delta.

"They spotted 169 in a three-hour flight," he said. "To be able to see and count that many in a three-hour flight was extraordinary.

"A month later, further investigations identified many more carcasses, bringing the total to over 350."

"This is totally unprecedented in terms of numbers of elephants dying in a single event unrelated to drought," he added

Kindergarten Cop is CANCELED: Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1990 comedy is pulled from film festival for 'romanticizing over-policing children' and is compared to Birth Of A Nation

Critics denounced it as 'celebrating the school-to-prison pipeline'

In place of Kindergarten Cop, a film celebrating late Rep. John Lewis will air

...Kindergarten Cop, which was filmed in Astoria, Oregon, had originally been selected for the festival for its importance to the state's history in film making, and to honor its 30th anniversary, according to Willamette Week.

Yes, KINDERGARTEN COP is only a movie. So are BIRTH OF A NATION and GONE WITH THE WIND, but we recognize films like those are not “good family fun,"' Leveen said in a tweet.

'They are relics of how pop culture feeds racist assumptions,' the author added.

'There’s nothing entertaining about the presence of police in schools, which feeds the “school-to-prison” pipeline in which African American, Latinx, and other kids of color are criminalized rather than educated,' Leveen said in another tweet.

Kindergarten Cop portrays a police officer, portrayed by Schwarzenegger, going undercover as a kindergarten teacher in order to catch a drug dealer who is targeting his own ex-wife and son.

The main character, who has no teaching experience, is shown struggling with classroom management before finding a passion for education and considering changing his career entirely....

Yep, that's definitely top of the list of bad shit for 2020. Can't abide people having different or strong opinions on things that don't effect me in any way whatsoever like which movies are screened at a film festival

Russia finally makes a entrance.

Russia's security chief described the arrest of 33 Russian private military contractors in Belarus as a presidential campaign stunt and warned Wednesday that it would have grave consequences for ties between the two neighbors and allies.

Authorities arrested the Russian contractors outside the capital of Minsk last week on charges of planning to stage mass riots, amid an upsurge of opposition protests ahead of the Sunday election — in which Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is seeking a sixth term.

Russia has demanded the release of the contractors for a private firm, saying they only were in Belarus because they missed a connecting flight to another country.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A highly pathogenic, tick-borne novel bunyavirus has reportedly re-emerged in China, hospitalizing more than 60 people and killing seven.

According to CNA, a 65-year-old tea farmer in the Chinese province of Jiangsu recently fell ill with a fever of 40 degrees Celsius and a constant cough. After being sent to the Jiangsu People's Hospital, she was diagnosed with Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), which is caused by the Huaiyangshan banyangvirus and characterized by a drop in blood platelets.

The hospital said the woman was the 37th SFTS patient it has received this year. Meanwhile, several other Chinese provinces have reported similar cases this year, with Anhui being the most affected, confirming 23 patients and five deaths since April.

Last November, Taiwan confirmed its first-ever SFTS case. The patient, a man in his 70s, developed a fever and experienced severe vomiting. He had no recent history of international travel but frequently went hiking in the mountains, according to Liberty Times.

First discovered in China in 2010, the novel bunyavirus can be transmitted person-to-person and has a fatality rate of 10 percent, according to the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The incubation period of SFTS is 7 to 14 days, and common symptoms include fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite.

Since tick bites are the virus' primary vector of transmission, the CDC advises the Taiwanese public to avoid wearing shorts in tall grass, wooded areas, and other environments where ticks are likely to be found. It also pointed out that there are currently no antiviral drugs for SFTS but that with efficient treatment, the mortality rate can be minimized, reported New Talk.

Okay, how the fuck did I live in the Midwest for 17 years of my life and never learn of a 'Derecho'.  I feel like Gob Bluth learning that his girlfriend was sleeping with another Hispanic named, "Hermano."

I suppose we really should start discussing the possibility that this is the end of the World.  all we need is a false messiah and some boiling fish and we're pretty much there.

We have Jerry Falwell Jr. and a pot of Jade's chili.

Most people don't realize one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history of the Continental US was in South Carolina 1886.  It was between 6.9 and 7.3 on the Richter Scale.  THat would cause massive damage these days as I'm sure there aren't many building built with earthquake codes in South Carolina.

I'm no hollywood business insider, but I'm guessing getting pulled from the "Portland Drive-In Film Festival" is either the most insignificant thing that can happen to your 30-year old movie or the least significant thing that can happen to your movie.  I don't see any in-between.
