Best College Football Head Coaches As Players

Pat Fitzgerald was a monster LB in college. 2× winner of the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy in 1995 and 1996.

Being the unquestioned best defensive player in all of college football for two straight seasons is tough to beat.

Spurrier..Heisman and NC.

Are we counting his NC as a coach?  Because he didn't win one as a player.  That said, he probably is the correct answer (although other Heisman winners did become coaches).

Pat Fitz if we limit it to current coaches.

It's tough to compete with a coach that won the Heisman trophy.  I would go with Scott Frost being a legitimate contender since he won a (split) national championship as a quarterback and then played six years in the NFL as a safety.  Still, a Heisman is tough to beat.
