P.S. - Speaking of making things, my dad made a car-top carrier out of plywood. He painted it to match our blue 1964 Pontiac Catalina station wagon. I’m sure we impressed everyone on vacation with that thing on top. Aerodynamic? Lol

I agree with @mulletpelini.  Your weekend assignment is to find pics of that.

No government cheese, but I do remember Green Stamps.  I licked and stuck a ton of those in booklets, but never sure what they were used for.

Going to a sporting event with tickets in hand in good locations was rich to me.

We were either $5 bleachers for rangers or scavenging/scalping on gameday for non ranger games.

I met my wife going to a ranger game, sitting in the $5 bleacher seats.

One more thing--kids that got Apple or IBM PC computers instead of Commodore 64s.

shit I thought having a C64 was rich until I got one.  One of my first real high school girlfriends showed me a whole nutha level.  Her folks owned an equivalent Lowes/Home Depot in Wichita, long before they ever got here.  They had a whole separate fucking building behind their house with an in ground pool.  They also had a 4 wheeler that we would use to drive up to the top of the sled hill near the house instead of walking back up it like all the poors did after the slid down.

So was there just a massive parking lot full of once-used four wheelers at the top of the sled hill?

In middle school, my buddy and I had this intricate scheme (at least in hazy recall, it feels intricate...) to pool our money and purchase one of the descramblers advertised in the back of Popular Mechanics so that we could watch the Playboy channel. We had it all worked out about how we could take turns with it, how it would be stashed in both houses, how we could clandestinely exchange it, etc.

We called it "Operation Egg" so we could casually talk about it without letting on what we were up to, because of course that doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary for a couple of eleven year olds to be discussing.

Operation Egg never got past the planning phase.

People who had an upstairs game room.

Having a TV in your own room

A second phone line just for the kids

A third phone line for the computer/modem (big spenders!)

Having the internet.... which then morphed into having high speed internet

Having a computer just for the kids

A new car

A starter jacket

Name brand shoes when I was younger which morphed into having Griffey’s, Jordans, Barkley’s, and Pippens later

Kids that got new bats /bags/ cleats every season in baseball

Kids that had every new video game as opposed to just getting one on your birthday and Christmas

Having more than one Tommy Hilfiger polo

Owning a pair or multiple pairs of Doc Martins

Jincos

Traveling overseas

Having those gigantic big screen TV’s that you had to wheel into your house and were like 5’ tall

I had a POS Huffy. Finally got a Diamondback when I was almost old enough to drive so it wasn't cool anymore.

Oh yeah and this!

Holly shit.

I forgot about my many prayers for a Diamondback Viper.

Then, once I finally got one no one was interested in riding bikes anymore b/c AOL, the internet, videos games, and porn.... which is fair.

I still have divots in my shins from those damn pedals, though. Fuck that hurt.

This one doesn’t have the passion of the Christ inducing  pedals and is without the super essential pegs on both the front and back.... but you get the idea.

Still a sexy bike IMO

I have spent a lot of money there over the years. They had a great hardwood lumber selection. My kitchen cabinets came from them.

Their pool house and new house they built soon after, thanks you.  True story, while we were dating, they were building the new bigger badder house.  The moving day was coming up and I was asked to help and of course I wanted to be the good boyfriend.  I didn't think about it till after, but the whole moving day, I felt like a dead duck, everyone kinda looking at/treating me like they would never see me again.  Turns out, they were right, she broke up with me the next day or so after the move was done.  Called bullshit on her for doing that, she said her dad asked her to wait til the move was done so I could help them move.  Dad didn't get that rich for being a dumbass.

I just thought of a 70's story, this isn't quite in theme because like I said, I honestly never paid attention to what others had that I didn't and just made the best out of what was around. I started noticing in high school about differences in income during the 80s when it seems like consumerism got into full swing. But this story is about my poor Grandma. She loved Folgers and some time in the 70's coffee got super expensive, like $5 dollars a can( I don't know the amount that was in it, maybe 16 oz ?). Anyway, she couldn't afford it so my mom would buy her coffee for her and that became a habit.

Fast forward a few years and this is still happening only my sister's boyfriend is working for Hills Bros and can get free samples to pass over to us. It was the good quality stuff too. Well, my grandma wouldn't try it and would insist on the Folgers. My mom thought she could get her to try it and then be able to pass her free coffee so she put the Hills Bros. in the Folgers can and took it to Grandma and made a pot. My grandma takes a sip, gets up and pours the pot in the sink. My mom says, "That was expensive coffee that we get for free! I just want you to see how good it is so I don't have to buy the Folgers anymore."

And my grandma says, " I don't have much and don't ask for much but I won't drink any other coffee so either bring it or don't bring anything at all!"  So Grandma got her Folgers. Funny thing is a few years later after my grandma passed, Mom got that way about Folgers too. She wouldn't drink any other coffee, no matter how high end and flavorful it was. My brother-in-law would bring back coffee from Costa Rica and Nicaragua and she wouldn't touch it.

Going to another state for vacation, instead of camping at Lake Summerville for a week.  My dad would go to the store and get bologna, sandwich spread (mayo with relish mixed in), white bread, cheep cheese slices, Shasta sodas, and a box of 100 little "chocolate chip" cookies, and that was all of our supplies for the week.  The cookies were about an inch across, tasted like they were made of sawdust, and hard enough to be a weapon, if propelled by a slingshot.

I do have fond memories of those Shasta sodas, though.

ETA - we had a great time, and I learned a lot during those campouts.  I wouldn't trade them for the world.

They also had a 4 wheeler that we would use to drive up to the top of the sled hill near the house instead of walking back up it like all the poors did after the slid down.

How exactly did that work. You sled down the hill and then ride the 4 wheeler up the hill and then sled down the hill. Then what, you’re at the bottom and the 4 wheeler is at the top. Did you just leave the 4 wheeler at the top of the hill and quit for the day
