A man was jailed for attempted murder after he ran his truck through his estranged wife’s home and then tried to search for her with a knife before police intervened Tuesday night in Bridgeport.

The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of Stevens Street, according to Bridgeport Police Chief Steve Stanford.

Officers arrived to find a 2019 Chevrolet pickup that had driven completely into the single-story brick home.

“It appears he rammed the house and then made his way out of the house, forced his way into the house (through the front door) and then made his way back into the kitchen where he selected a large knife and then he went on basically a hunt in the house looking for his estranged wife,” Stanford said.

When officers arrived, the man — later identified as 39-year-old Steven Kelly Wilson of Paradise — had made forced entry into the bathroom and was in the process of breaking into the bathroom closet where his estranged wife and two juveniles had sought shelter and called 911.

Stanford said when officers encountered Wilson, he had taken a butcher knife and injured his neck and was still holding the knife.

“The officers did a fantastic job of de-escalating the situation where it could have easily turned into a deadly force situation,” Stanford said. “They were able to get him to eventually disarm himself.”

Wilson was placed in custody and taken out of the home where he was treated for his injuries until Wise County EMS took him to Wise Health System in Decatur.

Stanford said they were able to secure a warrant for criminal attempt to commit murder and arrested Wilson once he was released from the hospital.

The estranged wife and two juveniles did not receive any physical injuries, Stanford said.

Through the investigation, officers believe Wilson went to the home, backed up across the street, revved his engine and honked before accelerating across the street, leaving black marks on the pavement, Stanford said, before jumping the curb and impacting the front of the home at a high rate of speed, missing two of the home’s occupants by only a couple of feet.

Stanford said he believes Wilson was attempting to get the home’s occupants to come to the front of the house just before he drove into that spot.

“There’s no doubt in my mind he was trying to murder his estranged wife and possibly the kids,” he said.

The chief said he appreciated the assistance of the Wise County Sheriff’s Office crime scene division who assisted in the investigation.

Civil court records show Wilson’s wife filed for divorce in May, and the two had a phone conversation regarding the divorce about an hour before the incident, Stanford said.

Criminal court records show Wilson was convicted of the third degree felony charge of assault family/household member with previous conviction in May of 2013 in 271st District Court and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Stanford said Wilson is on parole for that conviction.

He seems pretty cool and stable.

Good job to the cops. But I guess that every time the police manage to NOT kill someone, we should be prepared for this type of performative self-congratulations. "Hey, we managed to not kill someone. Aren't you proud of us!"

Now, let's see 'em do it when a crazy black guy has a knife and is threatening to kill his wife and kids and the police. THEN, you can pat yourselves on the back, coppers.

He has no conviction. The state will show him what conviction is.
