2021 DB Jamier Johnson

Everyone's favorite analyzer:

How does he fit at Texas: When he’s playing cornerback on film (he also plays receiver and quarterback) Jamier Johnson rarely moves at full speed because when he does he covers ground in a real hurry. He has a lanky frame that reminds of Curtis Brown or Mykkele Thompson and similar speed when he gets going. With his length and speed he’s an ideal prospect for cornerback and he doesn’t have the hesitation to get involved in the run game that you sometimes find with wiry guys that haven’t filled out yet. The ceiling here is as a boundary cornerback that can match up with big receivers in man coverage and is also nice to have within striking distance of the box. – Ian Boyd

Craven:  Four-star cornerback Jamier Johnson became Texas’ 14th pledge Friday afternoon when the Pasadena, Calif. Native chose the Longhorns over 14 other offers, including Ohio State and Oregon. The 6-0, 170-pound prospect attends high school at John Muir. He’s the 17th-ranked cornerback and the 24th-best prospect out of California, per 247Sports composite rankings.

Johnson is the second cornerback to pick Texas in the 2021 recruiting class, joining fellow four-star Ishmael Ibraheem. Johnson was a two-way starter as a junior, recording 32 tackles and four interceptions on defense, while accounting for 17 catches and 217 yards as a wide receiver. Defensive back is his future as he possesses the versatility to stay at cornerback or evolve into a safety.

Skill set: Johnson is a long, fluid cornerback with great hip flexibility. He can turn and run with speedy receivers, while possessing the length required to handle the bigger receivers on the outside. Johnson’s four interceptions as a junior, despite opponents avoiding his direction, shows that the four-star is a ball-hawk capable of staying at cornerback or transitioning to safety. Johnson is always around the football and unafraid of mixing it up in the run game.

Immediate playing time: The need for Johnson to step in and make a contribution as a true freshman depends on the position he plays, and the status of that position group once he arrives on campus. Texas could be loaded at safety and cornerback entering the 2021 season, or the Longhorns could be searching for young talent to fill voids left by NFL departures like Caden Sterns, Jalen Green or D’Shawn Jamison. Johnson can immediately vie for time on special teams. Expect his true freshman season to go much like it did for Kenyatta Watson II in 2019.

Fitting into the program: Texas enjoys recruiting the California area with Tom Herman, a native of the state, in charge. The Longhorns have signed fantastic prospects from the area, but only safety Chris Adimora has worked out with quarterback Cameron Rising and athlete Bru McCoy transferring. Linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd was forced to give up football with stenosis. Johnson is the ideal body fit for how Texas wants to utilize its defensive backs. He’s long, rangy and adept at making big plays.

Recruiting at the position: Texas now holds a pair of four-star commitments at cornerback with Johnson joining Ibraheem. The Longhorns needed a strong class at the position following the 2020 cycle in which Texas added Kitan Crawford, who may end up at nickel or safety. Texas did receive good news following national signing day when four-star cornerback Jahdae Barron was released from his national letter of intent at Baylor and joined the Texas program as a recruit in the 2020 class. The top target left at cornerback for the Longhorns is three-star Jalon Williams of South Grand Prairie.
