sigh, ok

real response.  I really think Coopers BBQ (basically in the same building) is pretty good, but Im sure everyone on here is going to tell you that Im nuts, since Stubbs BBQ is at 8th and Red River.  you can be in suits and not look out of place at Coopers  and its maybe $30 per person with a drink or 2.  You would be fine at Stubbs as well, but it can be loud if they have a band playing.

another good place to bring clients for Austin Tex-Mex is Iron Cactus, its on 6th & Trinity.  Not very expensive, but a good representation of Tex Me

if you are going fancy with the dinner, (and $$$$), Perry's steakhouse on 7th & colorado or Vince Young's Steakhouse on 3rd and San Jacinto are both pretty good

Might as well necro-bump this because it has been a while.

Haven’t seen my best friend in 2 years. He‘s flying into Austin 5/12 for 3 nights of random fuckery. I’m already gonna be in town on 5/10 for the Pain Of Salvation show and will just stay in town and make a vacation out of it.

We have a friend’s condo somewhere around 4th & San Jac (if I remember correctly) that we’ve used before.

We’re both 51. No budgetary constraints (no paycheck pics). He looks like the dude that Best Buy sends to fix your desktop (he tucks in his tshirts for fuckssake). I look like a middle-aged rocker (tats, black attire, etc.). We enjoy swilling upscale Beers, sipping Bourbon and banging whores (why not all 3 at once?). I’m the foodie, he’s pretty basic.

So…other than the Surly-approved trifecta of: 1) pegging each other, 2) hosting bum fights, and 3) snorting the Cascade pods in the cabinet, what are the don’t-miss places for a couple of middle-aged drunks looking for that perfect mix of debauchery and relaxation?

A burger at Casino El Camino seems obligatory. Probably catch a set at The Continental Club. Maybe a res at Midnight Cowboy. I’m also thinking La Barbecue for a lunch.  Possibly some afternoon stupid shit like shooting pool and catching up.  Maybe help some naked college girls pay their tuition in a fine, recommended establishment that allows that sort of thing.  He’s obsessed with Voodoo Doughnut, so I’m gonna need a solid coffee rec if I gotta put up with that shit.

Places I’ve scouted online (thanks to other threads):

Fixe for Saturday Brunch, Seven Grand, Dumont’s Down Low.

With a few exceptions, I’m planning on boots-on-the-ground terrorizing downtown, but a short Uber won’t irk me.  I ain‘t driving no more once we’re there.  Fuck that.

Is Rainey Street still a thing?  We used to go to Banger’s on previous trips and (I think) Clive across from that.  Good times…

But…enough about me.  What say YOU, Surly?

I do a lot of business with people from Chicago so kind of hard to impress them with steak places.  So, generally, I do Emmer and Rye for out of towners.  It's a good atmosphere and the food is very unique.  Highly recommend.

Oilcan Harry's for drinks and dancing, perfect spot for a couple of dudes out on the town together.

Cheeky bastard.  Knew exactly what it was gonna be but looked it up anyway.

csb time:  I did once have drinks in the Cockpit downtown.  A couple of South Texas contractors were telling me how they found this friendly aviation-themed bar right down from the convention center.  I'm guessing the rainbow-painted door did not register at all.  I never had the heart to tell them.

Very helpful.  Very timely.  Thanks so much.

Casino > Central District Brewing > Brew & Brew > Shangri La > Liberty > Zilker Brewing > Lazarus Brewing > Via 313

Thats a "Burgers > Beer and whiskey > Detroit Style Pizza" East 6th crawl that won't make you stand out from the crowd too much.

Pretty similar to my typical weekend (living on the East side). Rainey is a thing, but I hate it. Afternoons are bearable, but evenings are an overcrowded shitshow of college kids, bachelor/ette parties and tourists. Clive did just open back up a few weekends ago, after some hardcore construction (closed for a couple years), and I hear it's crawling with undergrads now, so if your friend is looking for that kinda time, you'll find it there. I have seen the sugar daddy crowd there with the 20-somethings in tow, so you might find somewhere to spend it. Banger's is still fun, imo.

I haven't been through ABIA in 4 years, but I will be picking up a friend from there on a late-afternoon arrival.  Is there a place to hang out, chill with some food & drink, and wait?  Or is everything inside the TSA lines.  Am I better off just camping out in a cell-phone lot?

Or...is there some place very close that will work?

So…in regards to titters, in general, where’s the best in town for two guys staying downtown?  Used to do Expose by St. Edwards.

Doesn’t have to be the fanciest. A little seedy is ok. As long as it’s laid-back and relatively friendly. Seeking the perfect mix of not getting constantly hustled vs not getting stabbed, either.

Much thanks to the Surly pervert brigade, in advance.

Headed back to town for the first time since last May.  Last time was a buddy-trip; this time a wife-trip.

Driving in Thursday, staying at The Westin downtown.  Apps and light dinner at Eddie V's (worth it?), then front row for Itzhak Perlman at The Long Center.

Not headed home until Monday, and not much on the agenda except rabble-rousing, shenanigans, and general mayhem:

Friday evening:  res at Midnight Cowboy, then burgers and drunkenness at Casino El Camino.

Sunday:  Dim Sum Brunch at Wu Chow.

All my old haunts don't exist anymore.  Will gladly take recommendations on downtown dive bars, lounges, taco joints, breakfast places.  We plan on staying on foot (or a short Uber).

Anybody else goofing off downtown?  Will gladly pick up a round.  Anyone up for a Surly HH?
