Hook 'em Gabriel!

Looks like his played his high school ball in the East Bay at Piedmont High, JUCO at Diablo Valley College, then D-II at U of Sioux Falls. Quite a journey.

FCB said this about eligibility:

"One.

He played as a freshman at Pamona College, then Diablo Valley State for a year, then one full season (2018) at Sioux Falls before last year's season-ending hamstring injury in Game 1 at Sioux Falls."

Actually, because this season doesn't count, he has two years left.

Texas signs 2018 Division II leading rusher as grad transfer

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas has signed Gabriel Watson, the 2018 Division II leading rusher, as a graduate transfer running back, team sources told Horns247.

Watson, who is listed at 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, ran 269 times for 1,957 yards (177.9 yards per game, 7.3 yards per carry) and 26 touchdowns with an 11-game streak of 100-yard rushing games as a sophomore at Sioux Falls, climbing onto NFL scouts’ radars after leading Division II in rushing yards and rushing TDs in 2018. Watson was also one of nine finalists in 2018 for the Harlon Hill Award, Division II's version of the Heisman Trophy.

In 2019, Watson played in just one game (rushing nine times for 23 yards) for Sioux Falls before suffering a season-ending hamstring tear and earning a medical redshirt.

Watson played as a freshman in 2016 at Pamona College (running nine times for 44 yards and catching eight passes for 100 yards and a touchdown). Watson transferred to Diablo Valley College as a sophomore in 2017, rushing 88 times for 449 yards (5.1 ypc) and six touchdowns before transferring to Sioux Falls.

Texas has been in the graduate transfer market at running back since late July, when senior running back Daniel Young gave coaches the indication he would be opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19. Young is one of three Longhorns’ players who have opted out along with senior defensive end Marqez Bimage and redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Willie Tyler.

Watson is joining a Texas team that has only three scholarship backs in training camp right now - Roschon Johnson, Keaontay Ingram and Bijan Robinson. Running back Derrian Brown remains on a medical hardship scholarship after suffering a stroke prior to enrolling at Texas.

Both Ingram (upper respiratory infection) and Robinson (tight groin - precautionary) were held out of Saturday’s second scrimmage of fall camp. Ingram also battled a hamstring injury off-and-on from April into the summer, sources told Horns247.

Johnson, who moved from quarterback to running back last season has been the star of fall camp at running back thus far for the Longhorns. Last season, Johnson averaged 5.3 yards per carry with seven rushing touchdowns. Johnson had 807 all-purpose yards (649 rush/158 receiving) on 146 touches (123 rush/23 rec) and became the ninth true freshman in school history to rush for at least 600 yards in a season.

This is the second time in three years the Longhorns have signed a graduate transfer running back named Watson.

Texas signed Cal grad transfer Tre Watson in 2018, and Watson led Texas in rushing that season with 185 carries for 786 yards (4.2 ypc) and three rushing touchdowns. Tre Watson also caught 22 passes for 143 yards and three receiving TDs. Tre Watson also led Texas in rushing in a 28-21 win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl with 18 carries for 91 yards (5.1 ypc).

If  Gabe Watson comes anywhere close to being as valuable to Texas as Tre Watson was in his lone season in Austin, UT coach Tom Herman would be ecstatic.

Herman has been successful with graduate transfers in three previous seasons at Texas. Oklahoma State long snapper Kaleb Smith started all season in 2017. Rice left tackle Calvin Anderson started every game for Texas in 2018, helping Tre Watson to become the team’s leading rusher.

Last season, Texas signed Georgia Tech left guard Parker Braun, who started every game for the Longhorns in 2019.

In addition to signing Gabe Watson, Texas also signed Michigan graduate transfer receiver Tarik Black, who played in 21 games for the Wolverines with nine starts (40 catches, 507 yards, 2 TD).

Black, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 217 pounds, has had a strong fall camp for the Longhorns so far, according to sources.

Gabe Watson is expected to be on the UT campus by the end of the week, sources said.

As always...  FCB!!

We need the depth really.  Ingram has had injuries. Rojo was a qb. Runs hard and with power would could bring some dings and dents. Bijan is a true frosh.  Anything to spell these guys. Plus you just never know with these guys coming in he could be Watson

This guys has good vision, feels the line well and is explosive enough to bounce thing outside or take it to the house. Granted, the competition will be better here but this guy is exactly the type of back we need in the position room.
I have high hopes

Agreed. Just seems to know where to run, which is kind of helpful to a running back.

Happy for this kid to be able to come to Texas! Great vision, with a low center of gravity. Great 1 cut and go runner. Seems like he can go 0 to top speed in an instant. And clearly has work ethic to push himself and the others in the RB room.
