Michigan Mosquito Materialization

That’s the thing about viruses. There’s so many of them and they change and humans are complacent, thinking we’re in control. Not a good plan to hate on science and then expect science to save you when things go south.

That being said, 2020 is the badass year when it comes to stuff you didn’t have on the bingo card.

EEE detected in Rhode Island for 1st time this year - August 21 - AP

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The mosquito-borne disease eastern equine encephalitis has been detected in Rhode Island for the first time this season, state environmental officials said Friday.

The mosquito pool producing the positive sample of the potentially deadly disease consisted of 50 individual members of a species of mosquito that bites birds almost exclusively. They were trapped Aug. 11 in Chapman Swamp in Westerly.

The disease has been detected in mosquitoes at the site several times in the past.

The other 102 pools of mosquitoes collected Aug. 11 all tested negative for EEE and West Nile virus.

Results from 147 pools collected Monday are still pending.

There have been no human cases of EEE in Rhode Island this year. Last year there were three human cases, including one death. Massachusetts has confirmed three human cases this season.

Health officials recommend using mosquito repellent outdoors, wearing long sleeves and pants, and avoiding outdoor activity during the dusk and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active.

The uptick in 2019-20 led to this reporting:

"outbreak of the mosquito-borne Eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE, in the United States remains a concerning conundrum -- and there could be several factors at play. As of Wednesday, more than 30 people have become ill with the rare but serious disease, caused by the EEE virus, and 11 of them have died. There have been infections in six states: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Michigan, New Jersey and North Carolina."

From the same CNN author in original link.

With a 30% death rate - you kill the mosquitos in the areas. That is effective. While the mosquitos are living, don't get bit. Very small areas of the country.

The Zika virus isn’t talked about much anymore, but that was a big deal for awhile.

Mosquitos savage humans. 800,000+ deaths in 2018. Some years a lot more than that.

What's the easiest way to get away from them?

Bug spray. Yard spray. Citronella-type candles and tiki torches. Then hope you’re lucky enough to not still get bit.
