Did Youtube just start ramping up their ads to 11?

Noticed last week or so, the number of ads in youtube are going through the roof.  Double ads playing in succession.  Maybe 5 ad interruption over the course of a 30 minute video.  It's getting as bad or worse than real TV.

On desktop it's not an issue since i have adblocker, but on mobile its kind of a PITA.  (I watch documentaries while walking my dog.)

I think ABC/Goog never reported Youtube revenue until last year, and I think it seems like they're trying to show growth from that business?

I listen to music on YouTube pretty often and it automatically clicks over the YouTube Music and asks if you want to pay to go ad free.  That's the end game.  Annoy you until you open your wallet.

Fucking youtube.  Showing a video in class today to my freshmen and in the middle of a 12 min video in pops a commercial for a bra.  Fucking hell.

One time last week we were watching a longer video and I stepped out to go get some copies from the printer and while I was gone youtube played a 5 fucking minute commercial.  My poor freshmen just sat there and watched commercials until I got back, lol.

Ads are targeted to your browsing history.  Way to go.

Maybe dumb question amnesty required, but WTF, here goes...

When I listen to/ watch Youtube on my laptop there is NEVER an ad, not even the little intro ones.  When I listen on my Ipad, it does exactly what this thread describes, especially in the bathroom when I get in the shower and can't hit skip or fast forward.  LOlz.

I realize they need ads, but it never has made sense to me why there are none on my laptop.

It's my school account - come on this isn't amateur hour.  I can assure you nothing in my browsing history on that laptop/account has anything slightly questionable.  My phone and home computer... well, I'm posting here - that should tell you enough.

You think they don't know what both of your accounts are?

Sorry, but Jesus I hate the use of the word “consume” for everything. It’s such a bullshit reductive marketing concept.

Youtube ads are clearly worse/higher in number/more frequent on non-PC platforms.  Our family talks about that all the time.  Ipads get about 1.5x my laptop or desktop.  TV around 2x.

I do know that the number and frequency of the ads otherwise is as highly driven by the person showing it (or, in bullshit speak, “the content creator’s ‘channel’”) as the viewer. Saw that on a Youtube video.

And that targeted ad shit is either really bad at its job or nonexistent.  Never seen an ad for beer, drugs, porn, or football.

So why is YouTube making this move now?

As reported earlier this year by OneZero, advertising rates on YouTube have dropped by nearly 50% since the beginning of February, despite viewership increasing during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

As per OneZero:

"Data from the Interactive Advertising Bureau, an advertising industry body, suggests that one in four media buyers and brands have paused all advertising for the first half of 2020, and a further 46% have adjusted their spending downwards."

Fewer advertisers means less dollars, overall, flowing through YouTube's network, which means the subsequent revenue stream then tricking through to creators is also drying up due to the shutdowns worldwide. By increasing its ad load, YouTube is likely looking to supplement those losses, and keep not only its own revenue intake going, but also that of its creators, who it needs to stick around to keep bringing viewers back.

i wonder if WFH skews the usage more to desktop, less on mobile, which also means lower ad clickthrough rates ?

You probably have ad blockers installed on your laptop and have forgotten about them.

YouTube is a monopoly. I mean they are the fucking definition of the word. They are the only major tech company in America that does not have a relevant competitor. Even Amazon has more competition in their arena.

They really need to have a suit brought against them by the SC - especially with how they've ramped up ads. I should not be forced to pay them money in what is basically a widespread racketeering scheme, and unfortunately I cannot access most of the content on YT (which is created by independent creators and published for free) anywhere else.

Most of the content on YouTube should be public domain. And this is coming from someone that leans very conservative on these types of issues and is largely pro capitalist, but this shit has just gotten out of hand and needs to be checked by the federal government the way that the steel and railroad conglomerates were over 100 years ago.

Change my mind.

Without the ad revenue most of the content creators making anything worth watching will leave the platform.

Video game content creators have already left YouTube in droves for Twitch. Most of the big names left are on both platforms and their Twitch income dwarves their youtube income.

Yeah, and while I don't watch a lot of twitch, I do occasionally check it out when I'm bored. And now there are ads on Twitch. I don't pay for Twitch so I don't really have a complaint, but ads are fucking everywhere these days.

I don't know.

On one hand, you have 17 year olds from all corners of the globes, speaking into an iphone about putting on makeup and minecraft and who knows what, who earns 200k a year, about 50x what their parents do combined (depending on the right part of the globe).  They're funnelling wealth to a large demographic of people who would have never ever had this opportunity before.

Also I do derive a ton of entertainment from it.  My youtube watch time far outpaces my television time, and i actually pay for the latter ,while the former has been up to now mostly ad-free.  So i've just been spoiled

I am not sure I understand your argument. You don't want to pay them for ad-free delivery of content, but you also object to them rolling ads on their platform. Yeah, ads annoy me, but what motivation should google have to pay for data centers and developers if they are not able to monetize their service? And what motivation should the content creators have to create content if they dont get paid through ad revenue? Sure google collects a lot of user data (which they can possibly monetize beyond straight ad delivery) but so do all social media platforms, and the Facebooks of the world all have ads.

Do you have the same objection with TV, radio, print media etc??? ESPN televises a shit ton of college football. If I want to watch a game on ESPN, I realize that  there will be commercial breaks. I'm not looking to change your mind, but I am curious what makes Youtube different than other companies that bombard us with ads.

the twitch phenomenon still blows my mind.

I have known 2 people who earned income from Twitch for playing videogames.

I didn't say that. My issue is that they have no competition so they can show as many ads as they want. Of course they should be allowed to advertise. They should also be allowed to charge whatever they want for their product. It's a free market. BUT - after a certain point there are federal laws that you start inching towards and can end up violating, and I beleive that those laws are an important check on an otherwise largely unfettered free market economy.

No - because those are not effective monopolies (or not in the same vein - this would be a whole different discussion).

I feel like I explained what makes them different already. But if you want me to boil it down:

1. The information housed on YouTube should be a universal right for humans to freely access - just like a net neutral internet could be argued as a human right in the same vein that we are entitled to literacy and clean water.

2. There is nowhere else to access the information housed on YouTube with even remotely similar convenience that has an even remotely as comprehensive library.

3. They can effectively price-set the entire market by increasing the amount of ads until you opt to pay for YT premium (which they decide how much you pay for).

The way that they have continued to change how they structure their advertising is deliberately meant to irritate you to a high enough degree to where you fork over money for YT premium. Last I checked, radio stations do not play ads in the middle of songs. ESPN does not pause the middle of an ongoing play to show an ad before resuming the action. Print media does not include advertising in line with articles.

I watch one "twitch/youtube" video game streamer, not for the game videos, but because the dude has 2 goofy dogs (Golden and Great Pyr)  that he does a weekly video dedicated to that weeks fun with the dogs- lots of dog having fun activities.

Thats literally the only video of his I watch, once a week.  Its a pretty popular video every week and that dog video gets about 200k views the first week

Meanwhile that same channel is his normal gamer watch channel... hes got  4.43M subscribers and every single video he releases gets to about 40k in views the first 36 hours.  He releases about 20 videos A WEEK on youtube.

based on the youtube ad payout level, hes making at least $30k a month just in youtube ad rev,  this link says he's making between $1100-$1500 per day    that doesnt include any endorsements, sponsorships etc, on youtube alone.

Pre covid, he took about 1 sponsored vacation a month that was paid for by whatever resort/cruise line wanted him there to talk about their location.

and hes not even a top 20 game streamer.  The amount of money good content providers can make is astonishing.

I’m not a big fan of Cornyn’s ad about child sexual assault constantly coming on during kid shows. That’s not a conversation I want to have with a 5 and 7 year old girl. I get why they’re targeting the audience of parents with young girls, but cmon

Close your eyes, snuggle down and enjoy sleepy paws.... (lullaby singing).......BLARING INTERRUPTION at 3x volume for some inane rambling commercial that rambles on until manually shut off......sleepy paws sees a bunny, and thinks it is kind of funny.... close your eyes sleepy paws...

They provide a net good for all participants -- that is creators, and viewers, and I don't see a compelling reason for them to be further regulated simply because they wield the muscle to annoy viewers like me with mid-video ads.

I also don't see a why they suddenly have to submit their laborand resources for free as a public good.

Then you should study some corporate US History and economics. Unless you support trusts and monopolies, which would be an interesting stance anywhere outside a philosophy classroom.

Well I didn't say that. Nothing close to that, actually. The argument that I did present - that much of their housed video should be considered public domain - is a much larger and more complex ethical issue that I don't think we need to get into on this thread. I brought it up because the fact that I can argue that point speaks to why they should be treated as a monopoly.

(I also realized that this was posted in Lulz and I am going on a huge tangent rant - so I apologize if I'm being somewhat contentious)
