2020 PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES: Joe Biden vs Donald Trump

About that bullshit story regarding a hidden earpiece: It's not the first time it's cropped up, and fuck anyone, in particular @ousuxndallas, who's spreading this bullshit.

The Long History of ‘Hidden Earpiece’ Conspiracy Theories

Ahead of Tuesday’s presidential debate, rumors began spreading among right-wing influencers and Trump campaign surrogates that Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic nominee, was being outfitted with a hidden earpiece in order to receive surreptitious help during the debate, and that Mr. Biden’s campaign had refused a request from the Trump campaign to allow a third party to inspect both candidates’ ears for hidden earpiece receivers before the debate.

“If Joe Biden isn’t hiding anything,” wrote the conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Twitter, “why won’t he consent to a third party checking for an earpiece before tonight’s debate?”

The debate, of course, has not yet begun, and there is no evidence that Mr. Biden will be assisted by an earpiece once it does. (A member of Mr. Biden’s campaign staff called the rumor “completely absurd” during a call with reporters on Tuesday.) But the theory is being speculated about in right-wing media, including on Fox News, and it has been shared thousands of times on Facebook. It was also advanced by “Q,” the pseudonymous poster behind the QAnon conspiracy theory.

“Secret earpiece” rumors are nothing new. In fact, they’ve become something of a fixture during presidential debate cycles, and part of a baseless conspiracy theory that tends to rear its head every four years.

The first real earpiece conspiracy theory dates to 2000, when Rush Limbaugh, the right-wing radio host, accused then-candidate Al Gore of getting answers fed to him through an earpiece during a “Meet the Press” appearance. (A representative from the show confirmed to Slate that all guests wear earpieces in order to hear the audio tracks of news clips played during the show, but there is no evidence Mr. Gore was fed any answers.)

Four years later, during the 2004 presidential debates, rumors circulated among left-wing bloggers that George W. Bush was getting help from a surreptitiously placed earpiece.

“This theory goes a long ways toward explaining the president’s consistently odd speech patterns,” wrote the liberal blogger Joseph Cannon.

Commentators on the left speculated about a “bulge” in Mr. Bush's jacket (above), which they imagined concealed a hidden receiver into which Karl Rove, the former president’s political adviser, was speaking. The Bush campaign tried to bat down the rumors, but they persisted, even though no solid evidence ever surfaced. A NASA scientist even got involved in analyzing images of Mr. Bush’s jacket during the debate, looking for clues about the mysterious bulge.

In 2008, rumors again circulated online that a candidate was being fed answers during a debate. Ann Althouse, a law professor and conservative blogger, wrote that close-up TV stills showed that Barack Obama “was wearing an earpiece” during a debate with John McCain. (Ms. Althouse later recanted her theory, saying it was probably just light reflecting off Mr. Obama’s ear.)

In 2016, the rumor appeared again, this time attached to Hillary Clinton, who was accused by right-wing websites of wearing a secret earpiece. (One such story, which appeared on the conspiracy theory website Infowars, was shared by Donald Trump Jr. and other pro-Trump influencers.)

The secret earpiece rumor is not exclusively an American phenomenon. Foreign politicians, including Emmanuel Macron of France, have also been baselessly accused of wearing earpieces during debates.

Accusing the opposing party’s candidate of wearing a secret earpiece is not a particularly sophisticated disinformation tactic, nor would it probably provide much help to a candidate even if it were true. (In fact, as anyone who has ever watched a live TV anchor fumble with a producer’s instructions could tell you, listening to directions in an earpiece while staying attentive to a moderator’s onstage questions requires a fairly impressive act of multitasking.)

But the idea of a hidden helper giving one side an unfair debate advantage has proved seductive to campaign operatives trying to explain away a lopsided debate, or sow doubts about cheating on the other side. As a 2016 Salon piece about the earpiece conspiracy theory said, these rumors mainly seem to appeal to hyperpartisans whose views on the candidates are already made up.

“When someone presents you with grainy screen captures of George W. Bush or Hillary Clinton and claims that they show telecommunications equipment hidden on their bodies,” the piece said, “your partisanship enables you to bridge the sizable gap between the poor evidence and the firm conclusion that someone offstage was whispering into the candidate’s ear.”

Quote

Debate preparation is one of the ancient rituals of political campaigns, a necessary moment of rehearsal for a consequential inflection point. Imagine, if you will, a room full of rabid monkeys hurling their feces at high velocity.

Which is, of course, why the president spent part of his weekend and Monday tweeting about Joe Biden taking a drug test before the debate. (Pro tip, Donald: If you’re trying to convince us you’re not into watersports, stop talking so much about people peeing.)

Quote

Trump’s attention span is notoriously short. We’re talking sub-millisecond short. He flits from idea to idea like a springtime insect feeding on the waste pool outside the local meth factory.

Knowing he’s never going to prepare like a grown-ass adult president, I present a few selections from the more likely versions of debate prep. He rarely listens to anyone for long, but between his family, his White House sycophants, and his Island of Misfit Toys campaign team, everyone might get a tiny bit of the attention apple before it’s over… not that it will do a damn bit of good.

Quote

The Family

The Trump family gathers in the residence. Jared sits with his legs folded under him on a sofa. Ivanka is draped over a chaise longue in a gold lamé evening dress (“The kind daddy likes”), idly swiping something on her iPad. Don Jr. is pacing, manic, pupils like ebony pinpoints, a bump away from a cardiac arrest. Eric Trump is wearing an Oculus virtual reality headset playing a video game where he chases small forest creatures with a knife. He’s already knocked over several priceless historical vases. Family members hold Trump-branded iPads with lurid gold leaf logos.

Spoiler

On a large wing chair sits the president, his phone in one hand, a Filet O’Fish in the other.

IVANKA: “Daddy, we need to debate prep.”

JARED: “Sir, if you’ll look at Slide 27 in the deck you’ll see…”

TRUMP: “Shuthafuup weathel, I’m eating.”

IVANKA: “But Dadddddy. Everyone says you’re not ready…”

Don Jr.: “FUCK THOSE PUSSIES. FUCK ’EM. BIDEN IS DEEP STATE, MAN. GOD DAMN, I CAN FEEL MY SKIN MOVING. WHO LET THESE BUGS IN HERE?”

IVANKA: “Don, shut up. Daddy doesn’t need the yelling.”

Don Jr.: “I’M NOT YELLING.”

Eric: “Dad, tell them glue tastes good. It’ll work.”

TRUMP: “Shut up, all of you. I’m trying to do my debate prep minute.”

JARED: “Sir, that’s not my slide deck. That’s PornHub.”

IVANKA: “Shhh. His methods work for him. Daddy, I love you most.”

MELANIA: “Vy is HotEuroBrides dot com in search history?”

The Vichy Staff

In the Oval Office, a harried Mark Meadows has a thousand-yard stare, his tension evident. Perched and Fox-ed to the nines, Kayleigh Mendacity’s flinty stare softens whenever the president glances her way, less buyer-beware and more come-hither. Dan Scavino is furiously typing into a laptop logged in to 8chan to post his latest QAnon updates. Other aides hover near the exits, expecting the worst.

MEADOWS: “Mr. President, no one is a better debater than you. You’re going to crush Joe Biden beneath your magnificent platform shoes.”

TRUMP: “When can I golf?”

MEADOWS: “As soon as we can find other players worthy of your majestic play style, m’Lord… but we do have to prepare.”

TRUMP: “Golllllf.”

MCENANY: “When the mean reporters are gone, Sir. After the debate.”

TRUMP (Petulant): “No. Golf before. SCAVINO! GOLF!”

SCAVINO: “Where we go one, we go golf. Yes, Sir.”

TRUMP: “Noooo, golf now!”

The president of the United States throws himself to the floor, howling like an infant late for a feeding. Kayleigh drops to the floor beside him, comforting him.

MCENANY: “Do you need the binky?”

TRUMP: “Binky.”

The Campaign Pros

The remnants of the Trump campaign sit around a table in their sleek—and pricey—campaign headquarters on a Zoom call with the president. On an 80-inch 8K Samsung television they see Trump standing in his tanning chamber, an airbrush slowly rotating around his svelte 239-lb, 6-foot-7 form.

TRUMP: “Good, right?”

BILL STEPIEN: “Mr. President, you are cut like a marble statue…”

JASON MILLER: “Mr. President, if I wasn’t banging strippers and leaving a trail of unpaid child support across the nation, I’d oil you myself.”

RUDY GIUILANI: “Shut it, perv. DONNIE, we gotta prepare for this debate. I have here my Super Secret Hunter Biden Dossier that was totally not given to me by GRU agents in Ukraine and is totally real for sure. You gotta memorize it.”

TRUMP: “Can we do this later? I’m having my lemur wig shellacked.”

Bill Stepien tries desperately to get the meeting on track.

STEPIEN: “Now, Sir, we have to prepare for this debate. We’re slipping nationally, we’re out of money, and Biden is leading in key states.”

Trump steps from the spray-tanning booth, his towel falling, to the horror of the men at the table. Trump wanders to a marble countertop, eyes himself in the mirror, and slaps his belly.

TRUMP: “Still got it.”

The aides at the table mutter their approval. Trump fumbles for a remote control.

TRUMP: “SCAVINO! I can’t find the Gorilla Channel on this TV.”

STEPIEN: “Mr. President, it’s important…”

TRUMP: “SCAVINO! DAN! Where’s the fuckin’ Gorilla Channel?”

GIULIANI: “Is this place open bar?”

ATTORNEY GENERAL BILL BARR: “Mr. President, remember to declare martial law during the debate. It’ll be fun.”

STEPIEN (Whispers): “We’re so fucked. I’m gonna have to go back to Jersey.”

i just hope they don't let that dickhead interrupt biden or anyone else when speaking. that shit with the last election cycle childish. do not understand why the moderator or debate org didn't mute mics or some shit.

Trump is going to turn it up to epic levels of bullshit tonight. He has only benefited from spewing shit at the wall for the past 4 years, there no reason for him to tune it down now.

Expect blatant lies, insane accusations and echoing of the right wing conspiracy theories.

I don't think Biden is up to the task of corralling Trump. Biden is going to need Don Rickles level skills for off the cuff shit talking to keep up and he doesn't have those skills.

A lot of people felt that on Wednesday morning, Trump lost that 9/29 debate.  What this email pre-supposes is...what if he didn't?

Wildcat.  Wildcat.  Wildcat.  Alright, I'm gonna go now...

yeah that's what I am thinking, which sucks. most of that should fall to the moderator right?  Its no longer a debate when stupid shit like that happens. its just a microcosm of everything that is wrong with how we communicate now these days.

eh here's hoping for the best

Yeah, I will be blown away if the moderator actually keeps Trump in check. I think the moderator already said he would do his best not to be visible during the debate.

'not to be visible during the debate'

its fucking numbing to see that. Thats so damn American it hurts. Lets choose rampant freedom to act dumb instead of constructing a process that unites us.

So Rush Limbaugh, the guy with permanent earpieces and on the most drugs of everyone I've ever met and I've partied my fucking ass off with the deaf and addicted Mr. Nick Jones...he's the one calling out Joe Biden?  Yeah, that makes sense in 2020.

Biden should troll Trump and his base by walking onto stage wearing huge headphones.

There are 100 different plays Biden could take tonight to fuck with Trump that we've covered on this site and we're not even paid operatives.  Think about that, there is so much Biden could do to fuck with him.

And the only "shade" Trump could do to Biden tonight would be "You're old and your son is involved with the Ukraine."  And of course both of those could be torn down in moments.

I never liked him nor supported him, but I never hated him like many of you in 2016...but I have to now realize...it has got to be so fucking weird for Trumpers right now.  It's like somehow cheering for Jerry Sandusky walking into the group shower right now.  So fucking bizarre for y'all.  To be rooting for the piece of human shit because you rode him this far...gotta finish the molestation of democracy, right?  Oh right...right...because Jesus.  If your grandfathers could shit in your mouths right now...

Anyone else watching the CNN debate pre-game?

they brought Tom Cotton on and asked him a bunch of questions. Cotton didn’t answer any of them while saying voters only care about the future and the future is Trumps forte....MAGA MOTHERFUCKER.

i can’t believe they brought that guy on.

I'm going to watch because it's part of history and I like to be informed but I am not at all looking forward to this. Watching a past-his-prime baby boomer and a sociopathic carnival barker baby boomer try to score sound bites catering to an audience of one; an idiot world news media. 90 minutes to try and score the best 5 second clip to be played on repeat for the 6-10% of people who are so stupid that after 1400 days of Donald Trump's presidency, they still haven't decided whether they like what he's about.
This is going to suck shit through a straw.
If I'm doing this I'm going to do it in my favorite spot with a minimum buzz requirement of "very". Let's fuckin do this.
Don't judge my bourbon barrel TV stand. We just moved in. At least it's not a cardboard box. f2791381d17503eeb5d4c4ae62594382.jpg

Joe..... your grandpa jokes are kinda on point.

That’s funny. I wonder which staffer came up with that.

I think Joe wins tonight. He’s undoubtedly done more prep and Trump will join the list of Presidents that come out flat for the first  debate.

I’m currently debating. Bourbon or herb. I think smoking might make cringe levels intolerable though.
