Wallace wasn't great.  But blaming Wallace is crazy.  They should really get a longform-interview type person to moderate.  News anchors aren't equipped to do this anymore.

Moderation had nothing to do with the shit show.

Trump is a fucking walking, talking shit show. He has problems following rules of decency & civility and the rule of law. What makes you think he can follow the simple fucking protocols and decorum of a debate, protocols which his fucking team agreed to.

Biden gave a tacit defense of Antifa when faced with the topic of extremist violence.

It doesn't even make sense if Antifa is not his base and isn't related to extremist violence.

You are just lying at this point man.

I mean in general.  Poor moderation is a trend. A debate is essentially a complicated longform and the people moderating them don't do longform anymore.

It would not have improved this debate.

Breaking News.

The Commission on Presidential Debates said on Wednesday that it would make changes to the format of this year’s remaining match-ups in the wake of Tuesday night’s melee in Cleveland, where frequent interruptions from President Trump led to a chaotic and often incoherent event, though it did not elaborate on what those changes would entail.

My takeaway from your posts in this thread is that you're probably one of those bothsider third party doofuses who buys brain supplements from Onnit.

Got an email from my cousin, who is normally apathetic and has only voted once since 2000 (for Obama in 2008). She lives in Kansas and is normally like "there's no point in voting. My vote won't make a difference."   She said she wouldn't have voted this year but last night's performance on Trump's part is driving her to the voting booth (for Biden).  We talk about conservatives and liberals and undecideds and whatever but I wonder if there's a huge vote that's being overlooked: the apathetic vote.  In my opinion, there could be a much larger voter turnout this year, one that is fueled by people like her who are going to vent their fury against Trump. She's a waitress on furlough at the moment and said she has nothing better to do.

The Kansas senate is within MOE. Keep her engaged.

Wild guess, but I think he was probably referring to your first sentence where you shamelessly lied by saying, “Biden gave a tacit defense of Antifa when faced with the topic of extremist violence.“[/quote]

He's mistaken then.

Because, as has been pointed out repeatedly, Biden unequivocally condemned violence and said they should be prosecuted.

Yeah.  He did both.

I’d like to see your answer to a prior question I posed which you avoided.

Sorry I missed it.  I'm trying to dodge trolls and still respond to posters that I recognize.

Trump denounces violence from groups that oppose him, but he does not denounce violence from his own political supporters. Is that how you feel, too?  Do you think right wing violence is justified?

No, that's bad as well.

We lasted an hour and then switched over to Matt Damon in The Martian because watching him grow potatoes in his own shit was better than watching the President's behavior. I agree with those who say Biden did fine. Considering the circumstances, I think he did, especially because the tactic to try and get him to stutter became obvious after the first ten minutes which just makes me angry and I imagine it did a lot of other viewers too.

So this might actually feed into what Donald's strategy apparently was. A political correspondent from the Washington Examiner was on earlier and said Donald's strategy was to (paraphrasing) be tough and forceful and show the voters that Biden is weak and unable to respond to toughness and therefore shouldn't be sitting across from leaders like Xi or Rocket boy.

Take that and combine it with this tweet below, and you can see their thought process. Now Donald failed miserably, but ignoring him might have given them what they were looking for...

I agree with your point above with respect to their strategy and also agree that it failed. Can't speak for the other suburban women and moms, but I watch a man behave like Trump did, and I think: go back to your bunker and take a nap. A strong person is not a bully, a weak one is. Kindergarten 101.

You're right, Biden should have said Klan.

The Klan is old news. They still are around, but the supremacists have rebranded and branched out so much that even though people know what you say when KKK is mentioned, they don't have the juice they once did. It's why those rebranded groups are so dangerous, people don't have the same knowledge of them as they do they Klan so they think they are harmless. They recruit everywhere young white males congregate: schools, prisons, colleges, military, police and the internet.

You could see Trump fuming, barely containing his anger with every turn of his head.  I know because I am or was a hot head, street fighting man at one time.  I could see his temp rising when Joe was talking.  He couldn't help to interrupt because he was going crazy.

You're not kidding. It's why I said last night it looked like he was going to stroke out. If you've ever been around someone that gets that look in their eye, tilts their chin a certain way, and sets their mouth and you know it is directed at you, you don't forget it.

I recall that during the town hall in Philly that Trump held, he got irritated with a woman who questioned him and then when he tried to interrupt she told him to let her finish. The next format is a town hall and I hope there are some fiesty determined Americans asking questions. He is contemptuous of the people who pay his room and board; don't stand for it, expose him for the Il Doosh he is.

I am guessing the ratings will be much worse for II and III which might end up being a bad thing for Trump what with being behind and all and needing a boost with the non base.  I don't see many undecideds tuning in again or even messing with the post game analysis.

just heard some ratings info.  last night had between 27-29 million viewers.  the first Trump/Hillary debate had 45 million.  so lower total last night.

the third and final Trump/Hillary debate had 72 million voters.  so ratings went up in 2016.  will they go up this year?  or was last night so much of a trainwreck that people will not watch?  that's the big network question.

I don't know, has he been involved with "anti-Communist" rallies?

And according to the transcript someone else provided he did immediately. Which you seem to have lied about. Did you lie about it?

"Anti-Communism" in America is, and always has been, a mask for white supremacy and fascism. Communism doesn't exist here as a political force.

No you just said Anti Communism is a mask, I just figured you didn't need to go to rallies to be a white supremacists.

Thank you for the response.  Seriously.

But how did he both tacitly defend Antifa in the context of extremist violence, while also condemning violence and saying anyone who engaged in violent unrest should be prosecuted?  That’s not rhetorical.  Where in the transcript did he tacitly defend Antifa committing violent acts?

It is the same part where Trump equivocated right-wing violence and white supremacy.

The question was about extremist violence and  antifa was in a list of things contributing to violence in cities (Wallace mentioned Portland and Kenosha).  Trump did his white supremacy tacit defense and blamed it on mostly left-wing extremists.

Biden interjected was that "Antifa is an idea, not an organization. Even the FBI director says so" (paraphrase)

Bickering occurs.

Wallace moves the thing on.

Don't troll.

Let me help you answer @JBJ, here is the transcript. Copy and paste the question answer you're talking about. You're full of shit.

https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/donald-trump-joe-biden-1st-presidential-debate-transcript-2020

Here are some snippets:

"Chris Wallace: (39:04)
And I want to get to another subject, which is the issue of protests in many cities that have turned violent in Portland, Oregon, especially we had more than a 100 straight days of protests, which I think you would agree, you talk about peaceful protests. Many of those turned into riots. Mr. Vice-president you say that people who commit crimes should be held accountable. The question I have though is as the democratic nominee, and earlier tonight, you said that you are the Democratic Party right now, have you ever called the Democratic Mayor of Portland or the Democratic Governor of Oregon and said, “Hey, you got to stop this, bring in the National Guard, do whatever it takes, but you’d stop the days and months of violence in Portland.”

Vice President Joe Biden: (39:50)
I don’t hold public office. Now I am a former vice president. I’ve made it clear. I’ve made it clear in my public statements that the violence should be prosecuted. It should be prosecuted and anyone who committed it should be prosecuted."

"Chris Wallace: (41:33)
You have repeatedly criticized the vice president for not specifically calling out Antifa and other left wing extremist groups. But are you willing tonight to condemn white supremacists and militia group and to say that they need to stand down and not add to the violence in a number of these cities as we saw in Kenosha and as we’ve seen in Portland.

President Donald J. Trump: (41:57)
Sure, I’m will to do that.

Chris Wallace: (41:59)
Are you prepared specifically to do it.

President Donald J. Trump: (42:00)
I would say almost everything I see is from the left wing not from the right wing.

Chris Wallace: (42:04)
But what are you saying?

President Donald J. Trump: (42:06)
I’m willing to do anything. I want to see peace.

Chris Wallace: (42:08)
Well, do it, sir.

Vice President Joe Biden: (42:09)
Say it, do it say it.

President Donald J. Trump: (42:10)
What do you want to call them? Give me a name, give me a name, go ahead who do you want me to condemn.

Chris Wallace: (42:14)
White supremacist and right-wing militia.

President Donald J. Trump: (42:18)
Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But I’ll tell you what somebody’s got to do something about Antifa and the left because this is not a right wing problem this is a left wing.

Vice President Joe Biden: (42:28)
He’s own FBI Director said unlike white supremacist, Antifa is an idea not an organization-"

You don't need to go to rallies to  be a white supremacist, but "anti-Communism" rallies outside of South Florida have basically the exact same people involved that would be at an open white supremacist rally. There's a ton of overlap between the two things, as you know.

Biden could have shut the door last night and he wasn’t up to it.  He is nothing that could be described as “sharp” or “quick-witted”.  Basically any other democratic candidate (Pete, Warren, Sanders, Harris) would have eviscerated Trump. It’s a shame.  Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that Trump’s display (not just last night but for his entire life) should leave no voter undecided; anyone who votes Trump at this point is a sadist or an idiot.

rightly or wrongly, democrats decided to take the bullets out of Trumps attack gun. Trump is struggling to find effectve ways to attack Biden.

Doesnt make it right... but Trump and his base would be all over the below:

Pete - gay

Warren - woman

Sanders - socialist

Harris - black

It sucks that we had to defer to that,  but again and again, the polls showed that among democrats, beating Trump was priority #1

Biden won because a lot of people who used to vote in the (R) primary voted in the (D) primary this year.

I'm not even sure that long-form interview would work in this instance.  I was kinda with the idea of the whole Joe Rogan debate but after last night, you think Joe is going to "moderate"?  he's going to be laughing his ass off at all the wild shit being said.  It looked beyond difficult to get trump to stfu last night, can you imagine rogan trying to or even attempting to?  Debates usually work, even with the bickering but it is really hard when one of the persons debating never shuts the fuck up.

edit: also like to add that I'm most probably only going to watch the VP debate after last night's shit show and take a pass on the other 2.  I mean I know who I'm voting for and nothing really is going to sway me at this moment, but I am just interested to hear Harris speak after not really being too familiar with her (even during her candidacy before).  also to watch pence squirm by having a female talk down to him is going to be funny.

If they didn't burn anything but trash, is there even harm?

I wasn't there, but my first reaction is to step outside and ask 'is there a problem? do you need some water? I have an extinguisher?" I'm a small woman, but my instinct is to see if there is a problem in my neighborhood and can I help in any way. (It's what I did when there was a stranger in my backyard once--turns out he was looking for his dog). Also, if I ask someone who they are and they tell me, especially if they are doing something illegal, I may not believe their answer as truth. There are people who pose as antifa types to wreck shop but I don't know that I've ever heard of too many people that admit to posing as militia to do likewise.

1 -- he's not wrong about "anti-communism."  It was absolutely used to denigrate and delegitimize MLK, for example.  Now, I personally am "anti" communism because I don't support that actual political system.  I don't believe that the state should own all production, all of that stuff.  But those are political differences, not human differences (like how I am opposed to white supremacy).

2)  Let's repeat this for emphasis:

Quote

I mean when people light stuff on fire in front of your window, you do kinda narrow your view on it.

Your fucking president incites hatred of my ethnicity, so virulently and effectively that MOTHERFUCKERS GO HUNTING FOR US.  One of them fucking slaughtered 23 of us.  So, fuck right off with your misplaced concerns about someone lighting fires.  You support a movement that INCITES FUCKING MASS MURDER BASED ON RACE.  Want to get personal?  That's fucking personal, a fucking asshole went out and hunted and murdered 2 dozen people who had last names like mine.  But, I mean, you gotta support the guy who inspired that, because some fucking skinny dipshits lit some fucking fires near you.  Boo-fucking-hoo.  You're on team ethnic hatred and murder.  How about we get my jewish friends talking about the Tree of Life slaughter?  That was really awesome, because it hit the exacta -- inspired by your guy, he went out and murdered 1) jews because 2) they are soft on immigration of mexicans and such.

Fuck.  Right.  Off.

You know, I'm really looking forward to the inevitable behind-the-scenes tic-toc that we're going to see one day of the Trump campaign's reactions to that debate as it unfolded.  They have some actual professionals on that campaign who know how to get candidates elected.  And I have to imagine that they were pulling their hair out the entire time.

I mean, look at Chris Christie, who did some of his debate prep.  Christie couldn't have been happy with what he was watching.

This.  Sure, it would be satisfying to everyone watching the debate if someone with a quicker wit and better grasp of facts than Biden had just cut Trump down to size repeatedly.   But:

1. That would make no difference in the election.  Hillary Clinton basically did that to him in the 2016 debates.  It doesn’t really matter.

2.  What does matter is how well the GOP can scare people about the Democratic candidate.  That’s all Trump has.  He runs on fear and hate.   They know what he is and excuse it because they fear and hate the other side more.  Biden is the figure that causes the least amount of fear and hate.  Pete or Warren would have had much better debate lines, but then more people would have said, “Yeah, I guess they won the debate ... but they’re socialists/extremists/too inexperienced/[insert something about being gay or a woman or whatever here].”

Yeah, the idea that any other candidate would have performed better is just wrongheaded. BT said it pages back, there's no "beating" Trump in a debate because he just keeps talking and lying. There wouldn't be a moment where someone lands a zinger or something and Trump just hangs his head in shame. They'd all be slight variations of what we saw last night.
