You know what else is oppressive, covers your mouth, and brings you to tears Jenna?

The right hand of your cell mate while she fists you with the left one.

Is Alabama enforcing the mandate?  We have a mask mandate here in California but who’s really enforcing it?

In Alabama, it depends on where you are. In and near Birmingham you won't get inside most places without a mask. Every now and then you'll get somebody dying for attention who tries to breeze in maskless, but that has dropped off considerably. A couple days ago I was at a meeting with two rather Trumpian people, and they were the ones who told everybody to mask up and spread out. I was surprised.

On the other hand, photos I see from people in the rural areas, they don't know that masks exist.

So maybe 1/3 of the state is really masked up. In no case is there some Mask Police going around, it's just a social norm, like not eating boogers.

I've probably said this before, but this impacts the world.  One state not requiring masks is like having a peeing area in a swimming pool.

it absolutely does. and its infuriating. and GQP leadership is (arguably) keeping me from visiting my fucking family. and every day that passes makes me more goddamn angry.

Per my father, he has been called out the entire time COVID has been a thing for wearing a mask in Midland.

Got family in West Texas and they were mocking masks back on the 4th of July.  Rural folks don't give a shit

So will mask wearing be flipped now? Instead of being called out for not wearing one, you'll be called out FOR wearing one?

Was already happening but this will magnify it.  I'm picturing some people screaming at Asian restaurant owners for requiring masks.

I hate this fucking state so God damn much.

You are so right.  Here are some literal quotes from my neighborhood Facebook page in the Dallas suburbs about Abbott stopping the mask mandate.  There were some arguing how dumb this move is by Abbott but of course below is the other side.

"I love it...but then again I love science and breathing and stuff.  God Bless Texas"

"Fauci ignored the science. At least Abbott follows the science and is doing what's right for us"

"pretty sure you can still wear your muzzle if you choose...the way it should have always been.  #mybodymychoice"

"This is long overdue as masks don't work.  Jesus will take care of those of us that believe in him"

"I am over 65 and won't get the vaccine. You all can have mine.  It will cause more harm than good and I am not afraid of Covid.  It made Trump stronger"

"This is why Texas won't become a socialist/communist state like the Democrats want the US to be.  We believe in freedom"

Approximately 7.1 percent of Texans are fully vaccinated. I repeat just 7.1 percent, yet this asshole wants everything to open up and remove the mask mandate. Fuck Abbott, dumbass motherfucker.

1B in Texas:

65+ or

People 16 years old and older with at least one chronic medical condition that puts them at increased risk for severe illness from the coronavirus, including but not limited to:

  • Cancer
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies
  • Solid organ transplantation
  • Obesity and severe obesity (body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or higher)
  • Pregnancy
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus

Damn that is broad in Texas.  Only a 30 BMI in Texas?  Need a 40+ BMI to qualify in California.

California 1B is much tighter:

  • Cancer, current with debilitated or immunocompromised state
  • Chronic kidney disease, stage 4 or above
  • Chronic pulmonary disease,  oxygen dependent
  • Down syndrome
  • Immunocompromised state (weakened immune system) from solid organ transplant
  • Pregnancy
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies (excludes hypertension)
  • Severe obesity (Body Mass Index ≥ 40 kg/m2)
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus with hemoglobin A1c level greater than 7.5%

_________

Sounds like dog eat dog in Texas.  Good luck to all.

Yeah, when I helped my mom sign up at CVS I was amazed at how broad the language for 1B is here. It’s vague enough that a lot of people could just sign up even if they don’t truly fit into that group.

There are two types of people in this world: people who piss in pools, and goddamn liars.

yeah, i said fuck it and booked an appointment at an heb about an hour away. felt a bit guilty saying yes to being in group 1b, but i'm also kind of in full on "fuck it, let's get on with it" mode. that abbott just enabled a bunch of fucking redneck idiots and bar hoppers to go ahead and bathe in covid pushed me over the edge. i have an appointment at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon for pfizer. let's do this.

Yeah I lied too. I felt a bit guilty, but the Abbott going full "every man for himself" has obliterated that.

My MIL went to the official Harris County website and put her information in and told them she did not have any underlying conditions. She got an appointment the next day. If you can get an appointment, just get one.

65+ though?

Just makes me want to explode everytime I see people say masks don't work for reducing the spread of a respiratory virus. I hate stupid people so much.

Well, let's be super-honest here--30 BMI isn't really that fat.  It's definitely overweight.  But it's not Trumpian in proportion.

My nurse, giving my doctor my vitals when I come in for a physical:  "I wouldn't go so far as to call the brother fat, I mean he got a weight problem."

Maybe, however....

You can do whatever you want cities.  You just can't do ANYTHING about it when people don't take the suggestions that medical professionals make.  In other words, you can't do shit.  Well, you could die.  I guess you could do that.  Freedom!

Can't be said enough.  Fuck you Abbott!

Charge them with trespassing and loitering.

Thanks.
Are you friends with a bunch of fats?  Maybe I'm looking at a more narrow definition of 1B, or I'm not putting enough weight on "including but not limited to" before the list of conditions that would qualify for 1B.  I take a statin every day for high cholesterol - would that be enough?

They do not ask. None of them at any location.

There is one yes/no question: “Do you qualify under 1A or 1B?”

Due to HIPAA laws they cannot ask more than that. There’s no notes or explanations. Just say yes and get a goddamn shot.
