HEB and Randalls are mask-optional.  Target, WalMart and Sprouts are mask-required.  Trust me, I've been doing curbside for a year now, and for every day groceries (dairy, produce, pantry items, dry goods, maybe not so much meat) you can do just fine with WalMart and Target.  Shift your shopping strategy.

Posted this in the Covid thread also.  Hoping for some guidance.

Dumb question.  I have an appointment tomorrow for the Pfizer shot 2 hours away.  My niece just booked me an appointment at HEB only an hour away but its Moderna vaccine.  Should I prefer one brand over the other or does the not having to drive 2 hours each way make the difference?  Is one better against the variants?  One gonna make me sicker?  What say Surly?

Moderna is 28 days between shots, Pfizer 21.  Quicker to full protection with Pfizer but longer drive.

I got my second Pfizer today at 11:45 am.  No side effects +12 hours other than mild soreness at injection site.

it's purely anecdotal, from this website and from friends, but seems like i hear more reports of bad side effects from Moderna than Pfizer.

2 hour drive might also be worth it so you can get the second shot a week sooner.

It's pretty amazing that a year into this, we still have to have this conversation about masks being a community mitigation measure, rather than a personal freedom issue based on personal protection. It's almost as if some people are FUCKING ASSHOLES.

I heard the dining room at Al Biernat's on Oak Lawn burst into applause when Abbott made his announcement Tuesday. I *believe* Al is strongly urging mask wearing -- and all employees would wear them -- but he wasn't going to get into any altercations over the issue.

JNJ is for the lazy low risk people. PFE and MRNA are for the people we need to maximize protection for, and those that aren't incapable of keeping a follow-up visit (this is actually what most of our vaccines schedules are built around, the lowest common denominator).

Better messaging than the noise we receive now. Thanks. That helps - seriously.

Y'all makin' it really hard not to be smug about moving away, I tell ya what. Texas has been synonymous with "bad government" for so long now, I'm not sure it is fixable, even if every jot and tittle of racist election law were thrown out tomorrow. The rest of the country isn't exactly swimming along in blissful prosperity at the moment, but you do hear "at least we're not in Texas" an awful lot.

Lived in four different cities outside of Texas.  Many admire Texas but jus as many think we are backwards hillbillies.   I’m in California now.  Do some people hate masks here?   Absolutely.  But I haven’t run into anyone at the stores that refuses to wear masks.  Not sure about bars though

If I had seen these posts last night I may have gone with Pfizer but I ended up cancelling the Pfizer shot last night so hopefully someone else would have access to it and chose Moderna simply because its closer.  I wonder if there is a chance when I get to HEB if I ask the pharmacist if they can give me Pfizer instead they will or is it not even worth asking.   If I die because I took the Moderna shot over Pfizer will some of you lawyers on Surly sue Moderna on my behalf.  I hear there is lots of money in suing pharmaceutical companies.

Honestly while I was extremely lucky to get a Moderna first dose, and even luckier to get a second, I think right now I might lean toward the single dose J&J vaccine.  Just to not have the extra days waiting for the second dose.   But fuck take ANY dose you can get.  The more of us are protected at least to some degree the more we move toward herd immunity.

I guess in my mind the potential advantages of the Moderna/Pfizer vaccines is the ability to likely quickly develop booster for the new strains.

My science mind is curious about whether the Federal Gov will test whether or not the new boosters developed will work to supplement the J&J vaccine as well?  Seems like if you get an immune response with ANY of the vaccines then you likely would get additional immune response from a booster no matter the manufacturer?

Although as I am about to hit send I realize I am replying to the Abbott thread, where science rarely if ever is contemplated by the man in charge.

Empowered Stupidity.

I think it was Johnny Rage who coined the term on another thread.

We used to be able to openly discriminate and mistreat these people, now we have to let them actually take at turn at being in charge.  Sickening.

My local school board announced they will be sticking with the mask mandate for the rest of the school year.  Makes me happy but I can’t tell you how many people are posting crap about how they want to vote the superintendent out and they are going to send their kids and tell them not to wear a mask.  There is one dude in my neighborhood that is shall we say, a total asshole, that is still posting stuff like “I can’t believe we are still making the kids wear masks for what is just the Flu”.  I read this garbage and I find myself chanting “serenity now” over and over again sitting on my couch.

Why are you paying money to live among these people?

Fuck me. I still haven't been vaxxed.  I try so hard to be careful but the grocery stores are going to get more dangerous. Maybe I should start going to Target since they will still have a mandatory mask requirement to enter their store.

He could have waited until a majority of us are vaxxed, fucking asshole. Governor Hot Wheels needs to roll under some sickly Post Oaks. I hope I get out of this year without getting sick.  Mask wearing is the biggest safety tool we had. He threw me under the bus. I fucking will take this personally and make sure he loses the governorship. Fuck his cripple ass.
Artemis is owned by a known progressive, I'd be shocked if they get sloppy with mask policy.

Did you throw away your masks? Doesn't matter what others do if you are protecting yourself.

Are you dealing meth out of your house?  No?  Ok, then don't worry about your neighbor dealing meth.

Do curbside from HEB - we've been doing it for a year and very few complaints.  Order most of your stuff curbside, and if there is something you really want to pick out yourself, make a quick trip into the store and grab it.  That will minimize the amount of time you're in there.

I agree, HEB should have stood their ground on this. They hire fucking SEAL Security to walk around with german shepherds and blacked out security guards packing guns, they shouldn't have to bend to the will of the chads and karens of TX. It's just fucking idiotic to put their employees and immuno-compromised customers at heightened risk.

I can't blame HEB for this. The state of Texas completely sold them down the river and left them in a no-win situation where they would be alienating a significant portion of their customer base no matter what they decide. Just a complete abdication of responsibility and courage by our state government.

They could still do the morally right thing and require masks.  They chose not to.   I can blame HEB.

Other businesses have already said fuck you Abbott, we are still requiring masks.  HEB chose not to make the hard decision.
