So though Abbott's PUC screwed the pooch and allowed for $16,000,000,000 in unecessary overcharges the solution is to... do nothing.

So in addition to the increased direct expenses related to broken pipes directly the result of a lack of power to warm homes, and the likelihood of higher homeowners insurace rates, and some consumers getting completely and totally screwed.  Abbott's hand picked appointees to protect the citizens of Texas, thought it better to simply send a bill to every living human in Texas for $537 dollars.  How do I get there?  I take the $16 billion in PURE OVERCHARGES, divide it by the 2021 estimate population of 29.8 million Texas citizens, and the price gouge amounted to $536.91 (rounded to $537).

You have to love Abbott's license to steal power grid super gouge, while most assuredly going after any individuals you profiteered off the storm with little bitty gouges. The big monster fucking gouges are ALL GOOD with Abbott!

And while you won't actually receive a bill documenting this citizenry rip off, you can be fucking certain that the costs will be passed onto the citizenry.

Against my better judgment, I'll give OnBoard somewhat of a pass, because he lives in Virginia and is much closer to NYC than TX. I'm not even sure he even has ties to our state other than this website. That said, I would appreciate him weighing in on our governor's decision. Having said that, I would like to hear from the others.

I have family ties to Texas (As in every member of the family except myself calls Texas home) so seeing Governor Abbott making decisions that could and will lead to more unnecessary deaths is sad. My mother has observed the using of a mask since they became available and it upsets her that people just refuse to do the right thing. I do not wish death on anyone, but if anything happens to my mother because of decisions Abbott is making I will at least wish for him to find the inside of a jail cell for the rest of his days.

He knows better and is playing political games with the lives of the citizens he has been sworn to protect. You know on second thought I think he probably ought to find the inside of a jail cell already for his actions. They are criminally negligent at best. Cuomo, likewise, needs to pay for what he has done in New York. He left the most vulnerable in the population to fend for themselves in situations and living spaces he knew were ripe for more deaths. Put these two in a cell together somewhere for treating their constituents like they were and are lives that are of no value to either one.

He could have waited until a majority of us are vaxxed, fucking asshole. Governor Hot Wheels needs to roll under some sickly Post Oaks. I hope I get out of this year without getting sick.  Mask wearing is the biggest safety tool we had. He threw me under the bus. I fucking will take this personally and make sure he loses the governorship. Fuck his cripple ass.

He could have opened things up to 100% capacity, but kept the mask thing going.

Shit, he could have waited a month, and it would have doubled the number of Texans who have been vaccinated.

But he couldn't, because he's not playing a long game, something has him scared and so he's flinging shit against the wall like crazy to see what sticks.

This latest move to have the government control social media makes me think he knows who his primary challenger(s) is/are.

I can't blame HEB for this. The state of Texas completely sold them down the river and left them in a no-win situation where they would be alienating a significant portion of their customer base no matter what they decide. Just a complete abdication of responsibility and courage by our state government.

They could still do the morally right thing and require masks.  They chose not to.   I can blame HEB.

Other businesses have already said fuck you Abbott, we are still requiring masks.  HEB chose not to make the hard decision.

One of the HEB bigwigs gave an interview where he said they had over 2,000 confrontations over masks that they've documented in Texas.

With Abbott lifting the mask mandate, one of these dipshits is going to gun down an HEB employee over this.

I think it was already mentioned, but Abbott is trying to control social media companies (in the guise of preventing censorship, even though this Big Government Republican is trying to inject the government into private business).

https://www.kxan.com/news/texas-politics/gov-abbott-to-hold-noon-news-conference-on-bill-to-prohibit-social-media-censorship/

So, with dropping the mask and pretending everything is okay, does Abbott have a good idea on who his primary challenger(s) will be?  Because these two things were not some random things he woke up from a fever dream and tossed out there.

These feel extremely targeted.

he doesn't have any fucking jurisdiction here.   fuck kxan for tacitly endorsing a fake reality where this is any of his fucking business.

Agreed, but the fact that he decided to toss that out there (which also means social media maybe donating to his (D) opponents next year) means something.

Oh, he's dumb as fuck these days, and playing a really short game, but somebody has him spooked, and it's not a Democrat.

Is there some kinda Faraday Cage around Texas that will keep in or out certain types of social media content?

Does he think it works like Lime scooter governors around the Capitol and Campus?

Heb is an extremely well run company that does a lot of good for the State, but they always profit off thier benevolence. They haven't exactly stood by thier employees with increased wages and hazard pay. I know Hebs in Houston and parts of Austin already have armed guards or cops. Have them deal with the nutters. Putting your employees in harm's way to appease some bullying man child maggots its bullshit. It's just like all the accomodation of Trump and his ilk. Fuck the assholes. Stop protecting thier feelings and start tasing or arresting them or fucking shooting them.

Yep, he’s starting early for re-election. Just like his Caravans from Mexico, Obama’s military training exercises are a military take over, etc. he’s getting his base fired up. And you know? It will work. Dems don’t vote. Only scared old white people full of conspiracy thinking.

Thanks for this.  Strange that I got this tip in a Abbott thread but whatever.  Kid woke me up at 5 and got an appointment about ten miles away

there's cvs info in dt too.  wheels declaring the state to be one larger bartertown was the last straw.

he made it open season, and that's why that data is in this thread because he is singly responsible.

I'm not of the HEB cult, but I'm getting there. HEB seems to be an exception to the normal practices one expects of corporations:

HEB did up salaries for the pandemic, has now made them permanent, and given a $500 bonus. Credit where credit is due.

The store near me opened for an afternoon during The Big Freeze, and the workers could not have been more cheerful during that rush. They closed back up at 4pm so workers could drive home before the roads got worse again. I think it was Wednesday, the middle of the freeze.

They've seemed to be good corporate citizens with empathy for their work crew and a connection with the public. Compliments to them.

Now with the meat packing companies, I'm with you, brother.

The last part of this. Make it real simple: refuse to follow HEB policy and attack an employee, trespass warning and lifetime ban from all HEBs. Do that to a couple dozen assholes, and people will get in line.

He was a marked step ahead of Cruz on the human decency scale prior to the Chinese New Year, for me anyway.  Now, the only thing barely separating them is that Abbott doesn't run down to Cancun at the first sign of trouble.

HEBs policy has been masks are requested, but not required since last summer.

I don't know if I've ever seen a politician act this desperate before.  He's definitely going to talk about MS-13 next week.

Given how rapid-fire this has been - in the span of a week, dropping masks and then pushing legislation to exert control over social media companies, something is definitely off with him.

In regards to the task force shit he's sending to the border, once again we know somebody in the National Guard who will probably get called in on this shit, as in the past, and neither he nor his friends are thrilled about this.   None of them signed up to do be available on short notice whenever Abbott needs to score brownie points with some focus group.

It can't be somebody like George P Bush - this is not the way to counter a more moderate Republican like Bush, since you'd be better off spending your time attacking them or their actions or who they didn't like in the past (you'd open with attacking the Bush family for not supporting Trump).

The mask stuff, the social media stuff, the border stuff, reeks of him trying to out right-wing some right-wing nutter.

And again, all of this is short game stuff - we will probably get a large rise in covid cases as a result, the social media shit is unconstitutional, and the border stuff is going to, once again, piss off a shitload of National Guard members and their families and employers.

It's not George P.  George P. was thinking about it a few years ago when Abbott might not run in 2022, but then the last two years of truly batshit insanity happened plus Ken Paxton basically invited somebody to just put him out his misery and take him out for AG.  George P. can do one term as AG and then set his sights on Governor or LG in 2026.  Abbott was/is hoping a GOP President in 2024 or 2028 will agree to put Greg on either the 5th Circuit or D.C. Circuit.  Thus really shaking things up in 2026 here in Texas.

All that said, as stated above by me and others...somebody came out of the woodwork in the last few weeks (likely seeing their window of opportunity right after the ERCOT/PUC debacle).  I don't think it could just be Dan Patrick, Abbott's thought about him as a possible foe for the last 3 years.  In the Senate, the only one foolish enough to try is Donna Campbell.  That she's been so hard on the Governor when it comes to ERCOT/PUC, more than almost anybody else in the chamber---is somewhat telling.  Only statewides I can think of that are crazy enough to challenge him are Wayne Christian or Sid Miller, both of whom are far crazier right than Abbott.  Maybe Justice Blacklock from SCOT, he's very ambitious and a serious Trumper.  Same for Boyd, both have decent name recognition within the GOP, but not that widespread.  So that leaves somebody with big name recognition from the private sector who would right-flank Abbott.  Last possibility would be Ted Cruz finally gets the hint that nobody in D.C. likes him or wants to work with him (his long term goal other than POTUS which is very unlikely to ever happen...would be SCOTUS), decides to head back to Texas and govern from here.  He doesn't have to play well with others...and maybe the executive position for two terms launches him back to a place where President is once again a possibility.

Odds are it's something less dramatic like Dan Patrick decided to actually run against Abbott in 2022 and get more national name recognition.  Spooked Abbott because Patrick started contacting his donor base, marshaling state political figures on the right, has some dirt on ERCOT/PUC, and can more easily rally a more bat-shit crazy version of the Texas right to primary out Greg.  It's probably just that simple.
