No Democrat is going to be elected Governor for a few more cycles.  It's not worth getting your hopes up.  If he is unseated, it will be in the Republican Primary.

I like someone from Houston. Not much more thought to it than that.

All Greg Abbott needs to do is throw out the “socialist, they’ll take your guns away, abortion and immigrants taking all your jobs” ads and he’s still in. The only way a Dem will win is if they have answers to that that changes minds or a charismatic character that makes someone want to change. I can’t think of anyone like that. But the Republican same o, same o has worked for 30 years and still works. Same ads, different people.

Yes, that’s why running left just doesn’t work. Target a few progressive issues and run hard on them. MJ on a motorcycle or someone spouting off about racial justice or the green new deal just won’t get the job done in this state.

Its tough for Dems in this state, run left and lose the middle. Run to the middle and the left abandons you. The result is the same, very right wing Repubs win.

She was a horrible candidate. Democrats need to get their shit together.

I saw Joe Jaworski is running vs Paxton.

I doubt Paxton will be on the ballot.  Too much stuff is coming out about him, and too many top Republicans have spoken out against him.

He will no doubt hang on as long as possible, but Jaworski is not going to hold back.  Plus Joe's grandpa was the Watergate special prosecutor, so he can run with that.

And he's a UT grad.

His guns position probably makes him difficult to win a statewide now.  Things can change but unfortunately may need a tragedy to motivate public opinion change.

I've always assumed one of the Castro's, but have been wrong.

I saw Joe Jaworski is running vs Paxton.

I don't think the guns thing is that bothersome.  It's definitely the thing that Abbott is going to grab on to.  But I just don't think it is going to motivate a lot of people who wouldn't vote against Beto anyway.

My big concern with Beto is his demonstrated inability to motivate Hispanics to vote for him (or to vote at all).  He gets the suburban moms moist, but he needs to do a lot of work in the Valley.

That being said, he's kind of the only guy right now who has the type of statewide presence that one would expect of a gubernatorial candidate.  As much as I would like someone like Colin Allred, his name recognition is limited to Dallas County.

Throw Art Acevedo's hat in the ring.  In the past, he was a registered Republican in California, but said he was a RINO, and he's been featured among Democrats (he made an appearance in one of the major DNC videos this year), and his anti-gun violence stance and openness to decriminalizing pot has tweaked Republicans, but they like him speaking out against defunding police.  Say what you will about him, but he's basically both sides at times.

He's also went after Abbott multiple times, and made sure there were plenty of cameras around when he did.

Who in Texas would motivate RGV's voters or Hispanic voters overall?  Genuinely asking?  I like Allred from what little I know of him but can't think of many Dems with a national brand from Texas.  Maybe we should just nominate McConaughey.

Acevedo as a candidate would make me vote for Abbot for the rest of my life.

Law School only.  Barely counts.

I didn't realize he was mayor of Galveston.  Decent guy.  Not particularly a firebrand or anything.

I'm really having a hard time coming up with an answer to that.

Greg Popovich maybe?  Trying to think of a Democrat Dallas Cowboy but can’t off the top of my head.

It was a joke but just looked at the map, mfer turned out the rgv in 02.

somewhere there's a TDP chair who will come to the realization that if they want to turn out the valley it'd really help if they could find someone prominent who both has a spanishy last name and can actually speak spanish.

and then they won't do anything about it because they're as organized as a 6 year old planning his own birthday party

Yeah, I'm surprised his team let him tweet that out.  I mean, Zapata County is not that far from the traditional "RGV" lines, but it's certainly outside of them.  Everybody has a different definition, but most end at Rio Grande City.  Shit, I got all kinds of hell in Raymondville because I called it part of the Valley, didn't realize there was some magic line somewhere around Sebastian.

But like it or not, Texas has even more soul-searching to do.  Trump not only did better than expected in Texas than we thought, but changed up a bunch of other shit along the way.

I wouldn’t really say that at all. We’ve improved our margins the last 3 election cycles. We’re ok pace for 49/51 next time, with depressed Latino vote. Turn that around and look what you’ve got.

Quote

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Asked during an interview whether he’s considering a presidential run in 2024, Gov. Greg Abbott said he’s focused on winning re-election to the state’s highest office in 2022 but after that: “We’ll see what happens.”

Abbott made the comments during an interview with Mark Davis on KSKY-AM in Dallas on Thursday.

“You know, one thing that you know about me, I take one step at a time,” Abbott said. “The first step is to win re-election and after that, Mark, we’ll see what happens.”

Hot Wheels has been presiding in the governor's (wheel) chair during multiple massacres in our state.  He has done nothing in response except T&Ps.

2017 - Sutherland Springs (27 dead, 20 injured); 2018 - Santa Fe High (10 dead, 13 injured); 2019 - Midland/Odessa shooting (8 dead, 25 injured); 2020 - El Paso Walmart (23 dead, 23 injured).

Whoever runs against Abbot should be talking about these issues constantly.  At some point gun owners (but not the nuts) will be part of a broad majority in this state who will agree guns need better regulations.   A lot can happen in two years - our recent averages suggests that it will include another Texas massacre.  Texas may come to agree with Beto's position sooner than later.

And don’t ignore his failed leadership during the pandemic. How many lives could have been saved, still, with decisive and metrics based actions? He not only has been negligent, but has sued localities trying to prevent them from protecting their people. Fuck Abbott. He’s done worse than nothing.

That's exactly right.  He's suing El Paso right now to prevent the County from putting in place more stringent restrictions at a time when the national media is (accurately) characterizing El Paso as Ground Zero for the second COVID wave.  It's completely absurd.

Zapata Co is not in the RGV, and the rest of his assumptions are just random grab bag guesses by him.

Sweet fancy Moses.

A not-inaccurate political analysis is "They believe in God and oppose abortion."  That's ok as a cultural or demographic analysis, but as an explanation of political affiliation and voting patterns  . . . .

A decent size chunk of the American electorate, ladies and gentlemen.
