Seems like bball is going to be more hazardous than football this year, as far as pandemic concerns go. Pros played in a bubble to get their season finished.  Close quarters, high contact game played indoors with college kids. What could go wrong? Though small squad size might make things easier to manage both from a potential contact with a COVID positive individual and from a rescheduling perspective if it comes to that.

Flip side, smaller squad size means three cases can wreck you for a couple of weeks.

It's definitely going to be a bigger potential headache the further we get into the season. You can get by early on if a key player or more has to miss some games or miss practices during Christmas break or whatever but come January when you're down to a 7 player rotation? Shit.

I think KU has to have David McCormack be their next big guy to become a dominant force inside, like they usually do, or they will not be as good as predicted. It will help them to have Garrett back, the best defender in the country on the perimeter.

This is big. I assumed he was a big part of the reason Baylor was receiving so much preseason love.

Yeah, I don't know who's going to be taking his minutes. I guess there was some expectation that he would be close to 100% and that had some part in the high pre-season ranking but he never did come back last year to what he was like before the injury. Was a hell of a player when healthy and was just really getting good at the college game when he got hurt. March Madness could have been so much fun this year.

Hard to know what to think about Tech after just this one game, but holy smokes is this team talented and way different from last year, where stopping Ramsey was the key to shutting us down. We went from having maybe 1-2 capable ball handlers to a team basically full of them. Very fun to watch. Hell, we have a McD's All-American coming off the bench (and looking very freshman).

Cade Cunningham looked really good for the most part, everyone else is questionable.
Moncrief is going to be really really good by the end of the year.

Our lack of knock down shooters will keep us from being able to run away from teams that shouldn't be in games. Somewhere around 16-9 seems like a good record for this young of a team.

I was encouraged that Likele, who didn't do much the first 35 minutes took over in the last 5.

Texas center Will Baker enters NCAA transfer portal

ByJEFF HOWE 13 minutes ago

Texas sophomore center Will Baker has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Baker didn’t play in a season-opening 91-55 win the No. 19-ranked Longhorns scored over UTRGV on Wednesday.

“We are very grateful for Will’s contributions to our basketball program,” Texas head coach Shaka Smart said in a statement released Saturday addressing Baker’s departure. “We wish Will all the best as he pursues his next opportunity.”

Baker averaged 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game in 23 games as a true freshman last season. The Austin Westlake product who came to Texas as the No. 35 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite in 2019 played his best basketball of the 2019-20 season over the final six games when he averaged 14.1 minutes per game (more than his season-long average of 8.3 minutes per game) in helping the Longhorns win five games in a row to get back on the NCAA Tournament bubble before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the Big 12 Tournament and March Madness.

In the six-game stretch, Baker averaged 5.5 points per game and shoot 48 percent from the floor. The 6-foot-11-inch Baker was 5-for-14 from 3-point range after connecting on only one of his first 25 attempts from beyond the arc.

This story is developing and will be updated.

Heard an announcer say that the Big10 is the best basketball conference this season. Is there any validity to that? I think it seems to be closer, but I think Texas Tech is underrated in the rankings and overall the big10 would have more kind of coast games. A bit top heavy, but I would say top 2 for sure.

i prefer to have that discussion towards the end of the season.

This was a 2017-18 Preseason Big XII prediction, when the Red Raiders made the Elite Eight.

2017-18 Big 12 Preseason Poll

1. Kansas (9)* 81
2. West Virginia (1) 71
3. TCU 64
4. Texas 49
5. Baylor 47
6. Oklahoma 43
7. Texas Tech 36
8. Kansas State 27
9. Iowa State 22
10. Oklahoma State

That was about as bad as I've seen a Beard team play and we still should have won. Gifting them the first half and leaving double digits points at the free throw line will get your beat against any decent team.

fair enough.

I want to see how they accept coaching and come out the next game.  That will say plenty.

Interesting take considering Tech never lead in the game, and the closest the score was at 18:07 mark in the 1st half.

what part of his post is "interesting" or untrue?

The trademark tenacious defense wasn't remotely present in the first half.  His point about gifting the double digit lead is legit.

The FT line performance was terrible.

Said UH team was legit.

I just meant if we didn't completely bomb in the first half and hit our FTs it would have been a much different game. Obviously Houston is also really good so that factors into it.

The part where he thought Tech should have won a game they were thoroughly dominated in.

Dominated in the first half, yes, badly. Christ, it's such a beating trying to have a conversation with Houston sports fans.

UH fan felt slighted.   I think I've seen this before...like eleventy billion times.

Take the win, pussy?   You motherfuckers are such a beating.   LOLz.   Good luck the rest of the way.
