John Harbaugh would have been ideal....Pref from his rookie year on. He has set aside his ego to build his offense around Lamar Jackson's talents and it's worked out pretty well for both of them. And I think peak VY with his head on straight would have been better than Lamar.

I listed those coaches I thought realistically might have taken VY in the draft that year, albeit the Saints is a stretch having signed Brees. I don't think Baltimore was taking a QB that year but otherwise, definitely agree with you.

I agree with the alcohol issue as well, but again I would go back to how much of that was influenced by the situation. Had the coaching staff been supportive and positive would things have been different? I don't know but I think it might have been.

Yeah, meant to add Harbaugh wasn't even around yet...VY was just a tiny bit ahead of the game. Even in college -- he had to force Mack to junk the GDGD offense to save both of their skins. Literally, he had to make a choice between almost certainly getting fired and letting Vince be Vince.

Way back in the '80s, the best player I ever played against was a 6'5 Black quarterback for the Waller HS freshmen team. He had the same VY stride when running and a cannon when chunking it, but he was a lefty, and they ran more of a traditional old-school option attack. Zone-read was years away. I was an outside linebacker on D and defending that shit was a nightmare. Some announcer got in trouble a few years ago for saying part of the reason Jackson has such success is that linebackers can't see if he has the ball or not -- he is really good at selling fakes, and, well, the ball is the same color as his hands. Same deal with this Waller QB, and it was made worse by their home jerseys, which were maroon, so the ball didn't get pop against that background.

Anyway, this guy could have been '80s VY but Waller is Waller. I was a Strake Jesuit Crusader, and when we rolled into town on the bus, we were met with a burning cross surrounded by Black and White Waller students alike -- because it was kind of our mascot, so /noKLan. But there you had the mentality. Somehow or another this QB -- Darrell Hawkins -- was persuaded to give up football and focus on basketball, and he was really good at that, too -- he eventually became a key component of Nolan Richardson's most ferocious Arkansas teams. But not anything like another VY, which he could have been. Meanwhile, Waller handed over the offense to your average 5'10" White kid and were a perennial .500 team.

Yep. VY was years ahead of Offensive coaches in the NFL - and as we've seen the last few years he was way ahead of Defensive coaches as well. The massive effect Vince Young has had on the way football is played at every level is unmistakeable.

The man who fucked VY's career was Charley Casserly. Fuck that worthless POS. If that guy does what he's supposed to Jeff Fisher would have never had the chance and would have had 2 additional losses on his record every season VY was in the league.

I will always have the memory of VY shoving that decision up Casserly’s ass in OT his first year.

If Jeff Fisher had been smart, which he decidedly was not, he could have won a couple Super Bowls with Vince.

Instead he acted like the entitled arrogant shithead he was and will go down in history as the biggest loser in NFL history, an utterly mediocre coach, and the guy who somehow managed to ruin a singularly unique talent like Vincent Paul Young.

Fisher and his mustache should start making porno movies to begin to start to try to rehab his in the toilet reputation.

He die yet?  Can we make an agreement to only bump this when he dies?

The autopsy report will no doubt read something like:

"Asphyxiation: Choked on a giant bag of dicks. Mouth, stomach, esophagus, and other orifices fully engorged with dicks."

I was there. Made the last-minute decision to drive down from Austin, because I just felt like something was gonna happen that I'd be kicking myself for missing. Made it there just before halftime. What I saw after his GW run was something I've never seen before and doubt I ever will again - tens of thousands of people in Texans gear jumping up and down, going crazy for VY and giving him a standing ovation on his victory lap after he'd just gutted their team. Imagine what could have been had Casserly not been a complete fucking moron.

Another QB killer coach. Besides VY he destroyed Steve McNair’s career too. McNair under the right coach might have been one of the best ever. A loser. Complete fucking scumbag.

I was in the same suite with the McNairs and other owners that game.  And stood up yelling "go Vince, go!" when he broke through the line in OT to win the game with a 40 yard run.

I got in a bit of trouble for that.  Was told in no uncertain terms never to do that again.  It was just spontaneous rooting for my favorite player in any sport ever.

Did you tell McNair to EABOD? If you didn't, it woulda been a lot cooler if you did.

No.  I respected Mr. McNair greatly, and he and my granddad were good friends.  McNair was a fantastic human being.  And one of the most generous humans ever.  He did a ton for charitable organizations.  Not a good football man, but a damn good human being.  He was a completely self-made billionaire who has given hundreds of millions to charitable causes, including massive 9 figure gifts to fund expansion of the Texas Medical Center.

Coach Fisher is losing 17-0 at halftime in his first game back. He’s such a great coach and football tactician that all of his fans here on Surly are confident he’ll fix things in the locker room at the half.

Fisher just needs a washed up, white, racist QB to run his offense effectively.

Fisher runs clock down to leave the game in the hands of his kicker, who was 1-5 . Kicker misses 21 yarder, Fisher loses

This is so Jeff Fisher. I’m sure he blamed the kicker. The holder. The goalposts. Everything except his decisions to kick over and over with a shitty kicker. Fuck you Jeff Fisher. God holds you responsible for Steve McNair’s murder. And for crushing VY. Fuck you to hell.

Yep. I feel a little bad for that K (who has no business being in that position in the first place, even in the USFL). Me & my kid were definitely rooting hard for him to miss though, because Jeff Fisher.
